What is Bernos? 101 Comments

The name Bernos comes from the Arabic word burnous/burnoose for one-pieced cloak like clothing worn my Arabs. The Arabs, who migrated to northern Africa and the Berbers take on this, was to make one of wool, a lot warmer than the Middle Eastern version. Burnous is worn throughout Northwestern Africa especially in Burkina Faso; its one-pieced cloak, white in color.

The Ethiopian version is a lot thicker and is brown to black in color. It does not have a hood; rather it has a hood like point on one side of the shoulder usually on the right. Ethiopian highlanders [Degegnoch ????]wore it. The hooded point was tailored to existence in order to keep the rifle on the shoulders, so that they do not have to hold the rifle outside where the it might be susceptible to rainwater entering through the muzzle. But why, don’t Ethiopian males measure up?

I really love Ethiopian men but with Black guys, I could be myself without being worried that I will be judged. They treat me special, for black guys I’m beautiful and unique; for abesha’s I’m just another girl!

What about for marriage?

Well, I think I’m going to have the preference of marrying Yager’En lij. Continue reading ‘no2 inter-cultural’

I recall 1988, the Hibret Tireet TV program comes one and this fancy looking skinny old man comes out to the foam, bubbles and fluorescent lights while consequently  moving his fist up down & up down.

I remember thinking that it had to be the best Amharic music video I have ever seen. And then I heard the song, wowzers amazing…. I had no idea what ‘keleb YemeneChe WuneteGna Semet or Fiqir’ was but I still felt it. I was running around all of that summer singing ‘Eneee Wedeshaalehu’ and pumping my fist.
