I recall 1988, the Hibret Tireet TV program comes one and this fancy looking skinny old man comes out to the foam, bubbles and fluorescent lights while consequently moving his fist up down & up down.
I remember thinking that it had to be the best Amharic music video I have ever seen. And then I heard the song, wowzers amazing…. I had no idea what ‘keleb YemeneChe WuneteGna Semet or Fiqir’ was but I still felt it. I was running around all of that summer singing ‘Eneee Wedeshaalehu’ and pumping my fist.
Its good to say I finally know what he is talking about, I felt it once I think. To me this is one of the greatest Amharic songs all time.

Mayyyyyyn! I’ve listened to this song a million n’ one times and never noticed. tks for the lesson…I’ve never paid attention to the “ye’hasset” part of it…I guess cos of the sax in between the two words, I always stopped paying attention after aydelem…..now that I heard it…
but nothing beats the lines starting with “be’geza andebete…”..you can just feel his desperation…

Unfortunately I don’t recall this memory that so many of you have, maybe it’s because my years in Ethiopia were limited. However, I can identify with the feeling an ET song brings back or causes you to have. Although I’m sure this is a lovely song in its right, I must say the best ET song EVER is “tizita.” There is something about Mahmoud’s voice that awakens the soul. You feel the feelings he’s talking about.
Even though I’m too young to remember when the song came out, it still brings back memories of Ethiopia. I remember our house, the streets and jelati, shamaene, wondoghnet and my mom and her friends listening to the song, hot days and the quite afternoons.
And the lyrics of the song, “bal-lal-shefet lal-lalf lesew tenagre, eketlesh gemre fikrish gebto begre. I don’t even do it justice just writing one line. The whole song from beginning to end is filled with lyrics that simply great. “You agree Nolawi, No?!”
