Its a white thing! 65 Comments

I am always amused by the sense of ownership people see over either genre of music, sports activity, or some other thing. I live in a white-dominated city and there are no reggae bars, concerts are mainly of artists like Shania Twain , various rock and punk bands with few black artists like Ludacris, Shaggy and Snoop is coming around too and that’s a highlight.

So in the words of my Ethiopian friends “ezih min yemidereg neger ale anyway.” But whenever I suggest skating, some of the jazz clubs, hockey games, skiing and such, I keep on getting the same response “ Ye’Nech Neger new” and they are not the only ones saying it. Buchela is not her dog, it’s her baby. Her name is Yemi and she recently moved to China with her infant buchela. I don't know if there is a man around, I think their might be. Apparently, she is Ethiopian American from San Francisco.

I don't know yet why she moved to China since her full time job is taking care of the buchela; let me know when you figure it out! She recently turned 33. The buchela doesn't look Ethiopian at all, I think he maybe keles.

Anyways, I have been following her activities for about a month now, and I am hooked. She cooked her Wot in a Wok, sounds familiar!

What the hell is this buchela going to do today? its genna eko! Continue reading ‘Buchela!’

Crowning I 77 Comments

Over the next three days week  I will be posting a three part series of crowning works of art by three major musical artists. The interest being on the song rather than the artists; these are songs which I personally deem greatest songs in modern Ethiopian music history.

I am neither an expert nor a musician, but what I have is love for good Ethiopian music & interest to learn the history of these monumental works of art, which even after decades pass still influence the current and upcoming Ethiopian artists. Just because Ethio Jazz is not here doesn’t mean we can’t have great music.

So,Without further adew! I reintroduce in the form of podcast the song titled “ere mela mela

Ere mela mela was recorded over a 3 year period between 1975 – 1977 by Mohamud Ahmed on vocals, Fèqadu Amdè-Mesqel on Saxophone, Tèwodros Meteku on Saxophone and Giovanni Rico on Bass. Continue reading ‘Crowning I’

Is honesty the best policy?

As a consultant for Fortune 500 companies, I'm used to traveling from city to city. Holiday Inn Express has become my home away from home for sometime now, the front desk clerks and I know each other on a first name bases. I was even invited to one of their homes for Easter. They even recognize my hairstyle changes as they have commented on them on several occasions.  The other day, conversely Andy, barely 20 year old, with good intentions said that my new look makes me look much older, like 27 or something! Was that a necessary? When did 27 become ‘much older?’ Besides, I paid a lot of money to get this new look! Is honestly the best policy? Continue reading ‘Candor?’

On December 13 we announced that we were running a raffle to be entered to win $100 American Express Gift Card! We had a large number of people order Tshirts from Bernos. A couple of orders from Europe; many from Canada; and a whole lot US, Seventeen different states to be exact. One from Fargo North Dakota; Ya for Bernos being represented in the Dakota’s!

Bernos would like to thank all those who bought from us online. Shopping online is safe and fast. Thus many in North America are using online shops as primary means of sopping. 2006 brought online sales to break the 100 billion mark for the first time in history. Estimated increase of almost 500% over five years.

I myself do most of my shopping online. I, during the month of December bought Abyssinie Swing: A Pictorial History of Modern Ethiopian Music and Journey to Lasta which I had never seen before, although I was very much familiar with the Lasta Sound music. I had met Tsegaye in LA this past summer and I told him that I knew the music but never seen the film. He was surprised because most people only recognized him only through the film and never realize that there is an actual band behind it. Great Music, great film and great book; which can all be bought online! Continue reading ‘Get it Online!’
