Continuing series I & series II; the third and final song picked …

The interest being on the song rather than the artist; these are songs which I personally deem greatest songs in modern Ethiopian music history.

I was trapped between two songs which I felt had so much importance culturally in the last 20 to 25 years. Go to any Ethiopian party and you are more likely to do one or two eskista songs. And there are a more than a few quintessential eskista songs. Selam Hiz’boche –back at you, once more to lecture about an alarming anxiety.

The Ethio-male, too often are being depicted as struggling to express themselves emotionally in appropriate ways, unable to think and feel at a deeper level, and sometimes not even good at ‘traditional male’ pursuits, including that of professionally and socially outside of the Ethiopian community.

You talk and talk and talk and finally we start believing it as true! They say that Ethio-males have hard time accepting change. Ethio-male still believes that he is in Ethiopia. I once heard filmmaker Haile Gerima speak:

You know we have so many stories, so so many stories to be told”

I couldn’t help but think that he couldn’t be so right. We Ethiopians lack the ability to speak about ourselves. Keeping secrets is not only tradition & culture but also a requirement. As the popular saying goes, ‘don’t air your dirty laundry,’ there are more that a few reiterations of the same saying in Amharic.
