Crowning III 17 Comments

Continuing series I & series II; the third and final song picked …

The interest being on the song rather than the artist; these are songs which I personally deem greatest songs in modern Ethiopian music history.

I was trapped between two songs which I felt had so much importance culturally in the last 20 to 25 years. Go to any Ethiopian party and you are more likely to do one or two eskista songs. And there are a more than a few quintessential eskista songs. Picking one eskista song would be an insult to the many Ethiopian singers that have produced such amazing works that we party to and wed in.

If you listen to most of these songs, there is a certain similarity. Usually double hard base beats followed by a whole range of instruments and amazing lyrics. Sounds that just makes you go eskis eskis eskis; Sounds that you can’t help but move your shoulders.

I didn’t know how powerful this song was till I saw Avi of the Idan Raichel Project stood the crowd composed of mostly white Jewish origin with his version. Although I had seen this happen many times over at Ethiopian weddings, it was interesting to see non-Ethiopians reaction to this song.

Ladies and Gents the song I am talking about is Nanu Nanu Ney one of the best of Muluken Melesse. Nanu Nanu Ney also the title of the Second Album of Muluken Melesse featuring Dahlak Band and arranged by Dawit Yifru.

Dawit Yifru on the piano, David Kassa on lead guitar, Abera Fiyesa on base, Tesfaye Tesmma on drums, Tilaye Gebre on sax, & Shimeles Beyene on trumpet.
Podcasted is Nanu Nanu Ney; one of the best modern eskista song.

That’s yet another great choice, Nolawi!! I’ve witnessed the power of this song at many occasions. People often find themselves gettin up and shakin it till they drop. :)

ps. you may wanna correct the title to ‘Crowning III’

    thanks menged!

well to me, eskista is a song style and doesn’t fit in this series. nol, what was your other song that was competing for the final spot in this series?

but hey, love muluqen’s track! eskssss …

I know Yonas, this song is known because people use it at parties and weddings gin I think the song as a song stands on its own as a classic!

the other song was yehiwete hiwote song by tilahun! very influential gin there is some really funny irony to it… thus not picked!

I assume yonas you like this song!

great selection nol. i love both songs. but if you ask me to choose between “nanu nanu ney” and “yehiwote hiwot”, then the latter wins hands down. “yehiwote hiwot” is truly a classic song and fits this crowning series nicely. the fact that our philanderer tilahun sang this song should not be an issue because this series is about the song and not the artist.

full agreement with yonas! yehiwote hiwot is truly classic

Nolawi–although you picked a great song in “Nanu Nanu Ney” I never thought of it as a great ‘eskista’ song. To me, it lacks the key ingredient of a great eskista song. The ingredient i’m talking about is the “break down” effect. Do you know what i’m talking about? As far as the song selection on the podcast–this version was done by Abegaz, Henock etc. Check out the original. As you mentioned the original was done by Dahlak Band. As far as “YeHiwote Hiwot”-I used to love that song until it became the “At Last” of the Ethio-Wedding slow dance pick (most of the time butchered at that)

It’s arduous to seek out knowledgeable people on this matter, however you sound like you recognize what you’re talking about! Thanks

Have you ever thought about adding a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and everything. But imagine if you added some great graphics or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and videos, this site could undeniably be one of the best in its niche. Excellent blog!
