“Just do your thing, man. It’s all yours,” he bellowed, dramatically gesticulating towards one empty white wall of his new condo’s dining room. It wasn’t furnished, yet. In fact, the place looked like it needed a lot of work. The wall-to-wall carpeting spanned the living and dining rooms, decorated with insolent stains and holes. The bedroom and bathroom to the side seemed limp, like paralyzed limbs dangling from their sockets.
I am still uneasy in my pretense. I am supposed to be an artist. Or some sort of person versed in visual creativity. It seems my visual creativity for most of my life may have consisted mostly of imagining the circumference of a random woman’s areola. Of course, that has its merits, too. Just not for a friend’s dining room mural. Continue reading ‘Walls’

Hi I’m Mike.
For those of you who know me, I am sure by now you know how keenly I have been supporting Barack Obama for his presidential bid in the past 10 months or so. Honestly, the sheer thrill of being part of something bigger than I has been the most rewarding experience I have ever had.
As improbable as the quest was, the Obama campaign—our campaign—is now in an upward trajectory to finish first and lock the nomination by knocking the so-called “inevitable candidate”, Hillary Clinton. Most of my friends were less than optimistic that America would not elect a black president a few months ago, but I think they are in the process of being proven wrong. As I wrote on an op-ed piece for The Ethiopian American Magazine, the American people are willing to see beyond one’s color and judge their character.
I really believe this is our chance to to make it happen. Continue reading ‘The Final Stretch’

Time flies when you are busy! Scientists have proved it!
The clock is ticking, 2007 is almost over and we are approaching 2008; Year 2 of bernos is coming to an end. It’s been a great learning experience – with lots of hard work yet so much fun.
For the past 6 month or so we’ve received a lot of emails and phone calls with questions:
How can I buy your t-shirts beside online? Do any stores carry your product? Are any stores going to carry your t-shirts etc…and our response has always been – our t-shirts are only sold online at least for now! But that’s another topic for another day.

Nowadays everyone is a photographer, a digital one. They buy the fancy SLR‘s and act like the next Ansell Adams. And the photo’s they are not bad at all.
The cameras do the job; the photos are in focus, they have good lighting among other things. Just looking through the Flickr, the quality of some of the photos is astounding.
There is nothing wrong with people taking photos; the problem is with the claim of being or becoming an artist. The fact is that photography is no different from music or any other form of art. Amateurs will become self appointed professionals. Trying to become an artist becomes cliché.
The art itself is mostly cliché. The artist is cliché. Continue reading ‘Red Yellow & Green’

It’s about five a.m. and I’m barely getting through the collard greens. I’m exhausted!! My feet are aching, my back hurts, and I have a headache. The only thing keeping me going is the thought of seeing the whole family sitting together and enjoying all this meal.
I cook once a year and that time is during thanksgiving. No one is allowed in the kitchen the day before and on thanksgiving and I cook up a storm. There is the turkey, the macaroni and cheese, the mashed potatoes, the chicken salad, the potatoes salad, the collard greens, the sweet corn cobs, the candied yams, and of course the pies! There is apple pie and my specialty sweet potato pie. All these meals are prepared from scratch and if I must say so myself…Delicious!!! Even the cranberry sauce and the gravy are made from scratch.
