No Mesgana Singers 18 Comments

My friend ‘wiki’ defines gratitude, appreciation, or thankfulness as a positive emotion or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit that one has received or will receive.

After having lived in the US for years being expected to say ‘thank you’ at every turn, experiencing the celebration of the commercialized Mother’s day, Father’s day, and Valentine’s day, being forced to use the institutionalized ‘employee appreciation’ programs at work to thank my coworkers and managers and celebrating a day designated for Thanksgiving to express a special gratitude to God for his blessings and appreciate loved ones for their support; it is no surprise then that my mind is corrupted to expect thanks in some way from my friends as well. Ochre is a deep golden yellow color and is one off my favorite colors. Banana Republic is famous for using it on many apparels.

The new thing for world travelers is Namibia — an oxymoron of old Africa vs globalization and modernization of post colonial Africa.

I read an article last week on the New York Times; showing the Lure of Namibia ending with:

I ordered a double Chivas on the rocks. The blended whiskey comes in two ages – 12 or 18 years in the barrel and when you order Chivas, it’s assumed you are getting the 12 years version.

After an hour of “how was your summer” talk, I am feeling the liquor drenching me. Continue reading ‘Super Summer’

13 Months of Sunshine; that is the title of this film by Yehdego Abeselom who I have heard about for a about 4 years. I have been unenthusiastic because of my indifference to the title since its close resemblance to the trademark of the Ethiopian Tourism commission.

Regardless, I have seen pieces of the film over the internet for a while, I had a slight understanding of the plot line, the cast – I met a few of them during the Ethiopian Soccer Tournament in DC.

So finally, I was able to catch this film via screening here in DC on Saturday. And since it’s been a long time in the making I had built up my expectation somewhat high.

The plot line had so much depth, intertwined with the theme of Coffee and 13 months. Continue reading ‘Asrasost’
