The number of people that came to watch Obama speak before the biggest crowd he ever had; 200,000 in berlin. The next biggest crowd was when he spoke in Oregon and 75,000 showed up.

obama in berlin
obama in berlin
obama in berlin

People of Berlin – people of the world – this is our moment. This is our time.

Everyone is drawing comparisons between Barack Obama’s speech in Berlin and those of John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan; they were helped along by Obama, whose remarks made several references to their words.

Just amazing.

The walls between the countries with the most and those with the least cannot stand. The walls between races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand.

No fucken walls, we are people of the world.

I usually don’t do this but…..FIRST!!!!!!!! Seriously though, I know I should be savoring this moment in history, a first black american president. What is slowly, painfully dawning on me is the reality that we really do live in the era of American hegemony. I thought the american century ended in the 20th? Any sort of global empire just doesn’t sit well with me. I prefer small and large states, constantly aligning and keeping each other in check.

  2. 2 tpeace

this dude is a skilled orator! fantastic words he uses…simple and small words with force and energy. sometimes i’m a bit thrown off bout some of his loaded comments but over all…woahh!

  3. 3 Nolawi

You know what- the hegemony as you say it is going down hill actually…

China and India are coming… – but Obama is here to lift america once again – postponing the balance a little bit

in fifty years… america will not be the only super power

china will have major say in it…

another factor is the population growth of third world countries…

  4. 4 ep

I do think there is something that Obama will change despite it is difficult to gain the supper power again. But we all know how the Russia collapsed from the “supper power”. So, it is a matter of who is smarter.

About third world population growth, read how some idiot journalists say. It is not positive!
    Link

  5. 5 Nolawi

Actually EP I do wholeheartedly agree with the fact that the population growth of african countries is not a good thing at all..

This is not just about ethiopia but africa as a whole the growth rate is betam catastrophic… dangerous.. we can’t grow economy without decreasing the number of mouths to feed…

so the population growth is probably why africa will never grow out of poverty…

  6. 6 Dinich

This is in a Berlin gym. How can u not love this guy…

“Obama (with toned arms and a strong back) puts on his headphones for his iPod to listen to pop music. He hums quietly. Then he jumps on a fitness bike. He pushes three times on the pedals — but then can’t be bothered with it.

“He picks up a pair of 16 kilo weights and starts curling them with his left and right arms, 30 repetitions on each side. Then, amazingly, he picks up the 32 kilo weights! Very slowly he lifts them, first 10 curls with his right, then 10 with his left.

Quickly I ask: “Mr. Obama, could I take a photo?”. “Of course!” he answers, before asking my name and coming over to stand next to me. “My name’s Judith” I reply. “I’m Barack Obama, nice to meet you!” he says, and puts his arm across my shoulder. I put my arm around his hip — wow, he didn’t even sweat! WHAT A MAN!”

Look at Nemos reponse for the stupid article

    http://nemozen.blogspot.com/ 2008/07/letter-to-editor.html

Nolawi, did you really get what Myers is trying to say ?

  8. 8 Nolawi

Spacefog- the problem with his response is that he said

At the same time, China and India are earning their place at the table of the global economy, but in the process putting pressure on the world’s resources. In particular, as has been well publicized, their growing appetite for meat is driving up prices of meat, of soybeans and corn further down the food chain, and even of oil and gas.

What he failed to say is that this that regardless of the numbers when China put in place population control in 1978-80 that is when the economy started to grow…

you see, a country is like a family- when you make more money you have a better life in the household..you have 5 more mouth to feed – then its a lose…. so its the growth rate of the african population that has to be controlled before economy..

I actually wrote about this- long time ago in 2006 on carpe deim

    Economic Growth 101

  9. 9 The Uncle

Good for him. Conservative talk radio is furious and instead of throwing their far-from-common-sense ideology to their not so intelligent audience, they’re going on an attack on Obama trying to make a cheap political point. It’s sad man. It seems like they ran out of things to say about him, so what’re they start doing…saying things “The messayah (Limbaugh’s nick name for Obama)is going around making speeches as if he is already the president”..yea comments from a guy who changed a fuckin’ boloni sandwich to a $400 mil job…by the way did you know that Rush Limbaugh started his showbiz career as a radio DJ and never even graduated from college. Now tell me this folks…would you seek an advise from this guy to make an assessment of which candidate to vote for in november?

  10. 10 Spacefog

    Nolawi

I hear you on population and dev´t .
The question was do you agree with Myers saying stuff like

A child should die of hunger because he/she is going to die from circumsion anyways

The West doesn´t have any moral Obligation to give aid to Africa

As for Nemo, I am sure you get the sarcasm,
    http://art-bin.com/art/omodest.html

  11. 11 Nolawi

A child should die of hunger because he/she is going to die from circumsion anyways

The West doesn´t have any moral Obligation to give aid to Africa

nothing in the article says what you said…

I don’t know about the moral obligation minamin – but most of bernos readers.. the idealist type have said that they disagreed with aid to africa because it just makes them / us dependent on aid… me I think aid is ok.. some moral obligation blah blah

    ————–

but I do think population explosion is probably the worst thing worse than war….

  12. 12 helen

Isn’t it interesting though with all this great publicity for Obama for his trip and all the gaffs and mistakes Mccain has been making of late & the low approval rating for the prez, they are virtually tied in the polls? I dont get it. With all the problems this country is having, (sub prime crisis, high gas prices, high unemployement, the dollar crisis, the death of habeas corpus etc…) McBush can still win this thing. I just dont get it. Why isn’t Obama 20 points ahead?

  13. 13 Mamitu

I think despite all the positive response that Obama is having around the world , that he seems to be the one with smarts between the two candidates and the way the economy is doing, I think there is a huge chance that he might loose come November. I think Americans see the confidence that he is showing as pride and being too full of himself. He should show his humble side and ask people for their votes. The Righties are trying to make Americans believe that he is an empty suite and guess what I think Americans are dumb enough to believe it.

  14. 14 The Uncle

I think there is a huge chance that he might loose come November.

    Come again!

  15. 15 Spacefog

    Nol,

    Lol at the idealist stuff.

Here is a cut/paste from his article.

How much morality is there in saving an Ethiopian child from starvation today, for it to survive to a life of brutal circumcision, poverty, hunger, violence and sexual abuse, resulting in another half-dozen such wide-eyed children, with comparably jolly little lives ahead of them? Of course, it might make you feel better, which is a prime reason for so much charity. But that is not good enough.

  16. 16 Nolawi

ya i agree with that… spacefog! – that might not be a good enough reason- but your rephrased statement about what he said was not accurate…

    - what he is saying is that aid only postponed the inevitable..

ok i see where he is coming from—

Helenye – sweetie eyewulesh the country is so divided and so to the right that no democratic candidate is going to get more than 60% of the vote… and it hasn’t been true in the us for the last 50 years… so don’e expect that…

    -

on the other hand a republican can get between 60 to 70% until recently- the last 20%- because the country was uneducated and very conservative…
but that is changing a little bit.. post boomer era

    -

reagan won 49 states in 84 against mondale… and 46 in 80 agaisnt carter… but even so he got less than 70% of the vote…

so national polls don’t make sense in us presidential elecetion… you have to see state by state polls…

    —-

and one more thing america doesnt have a hard left… relatively speaking by western standards..

you see the moderate dems are actually centrist… conservatives are hard right and republicans are right…

so nader and the likes will never get elected in the US

  17. 17 embrt

i’m not an obamaholic…i have very healthy (and founded) doubts about him. yet still, the sway this man black man holds over the world, flushes me with pride.

  18. 18 abTori

I guess it all boils down to the question, is America ready for a black president!? I say yes but what do i know! For most it’s still unfathomable, so they’re saying and doing anything they can to portray him as the inexperienced one, full of hiself, who does he think he is President Kennedy!, blah blah blah… McCain and the likes of Limbaugh (I find his remarks and attempts very childish if you ask me) will fight this tooth and nail til the very end. Funny thing is in a way folks are just trying to sell their papers by splashing the Obama brand on their 1st page and writing all sorts of accusations and theories about him.

Emanuel Cleaver, an African-American congressman and Clinton supporter from Kansas City, MO, reported before Obama’s win that “African-American superdelegates are being targeted, harassed, and threatened. They are getting nasty letters, phone calls, threats they’ll get an opponent, being called an Uncle Tom. This is the politics of the 1950s.”

i say give the man a chance! if only for his bigger vision.

  19. 19 helen

so national polls don’t make sense in us presidential elecetion… you have to see state by state polls…

Nolawi shikor, maarey..what you say is correct. I just don’t have confidence in the American electorate. There are a lot of them who still believe Obama is an uppity Negro who is a radical, a Muslim with a fist-bumping militant wife and at the end of the day no matter how beneficial it is for them to have him in office, will still not vote for him just because he is black. I know people who voted for bush twice, for god’s sake.

  20. 20 witness

I hope Obama will win. America needs to right the wrongs of the past.
But some white folks will never see a person of color as their equal regardless what he or she stands for. They don’t take time to consider that he or she is an educated law abiding citizen.
They overlook the person’s positive contribution to the world.
Some white folks operate in the 1808 or 1908 frame of mind. even though it is 2008. They are plagued by a disease called racism. They are stubborn and won’t change. They cause so much harm to the poor, to the havenots, to the voiceless, to mankind overall. It’s very sad and unfortunate but it’s true.

I hope Barack Obama will win this election. May be that will cause them to open their eyes. May be it will help them soften their hearts and accept that all men are created equal and we are all created in the image of God.
If he wins I hope he will keep his word once he gets to the White House. I hope he will bring a real change to America.

If you’re a US citizen please go out and vote in November.

    Nolawi

I just read your economic 101 article you wrote a while back.
It makes me sick China can tell it’s citizens they can have only on child. I’ve even heard and read women being forced to abort their unborn babies against their wishes.

This type of thinking is dangerous and inhuman and stands against God Plan for mankind. I hope Africans or Ethiopians will never have to face a one child policy in order to curb or ” solve” a countries problems.
Just imagine your friend or your relative being told they can’t have more than one child.
That’s is sick. It makes me want to scream.

Almost everything we buy is from China.
China has taken over the world market. They are a super power already.
soon the world will know that. Africa is a complex continent. It has and continues to have problems internal and external. It’s suffice to say corruption, greed, lack of educational opportunities for women and children are the main causes of African problems.

last but not least I hold Meles and his puppies responsible for the unfortunate state of Ethiopia is now.
Meles is a bully, a thief and a terrorist etc….I can go on on on he is not a leader.
I wonder what his legacy will be?

  25. 25 Getu

Economic growth has everything to do with population growth but it is exactly the opposite of what Nolawi said.
The population density of Africa is less than 30% of Europe’s but somehow Nolawi tells us there are too many Africans.
By definition, the larger the population the higher the potential for economic growth.
Witness, I agree with you. In my opinion, Meles and his chronies are the obstacles against Ethiopian economic growth. Al Bashir et al against Sudanese growth. Mugabe et al again Zimbabwean growth. etc… And non-Africans et al against African growth.
but, what are we going to do? its the laws of nature…..

unbelievable! condemns the entire African continent to death! a self-serving and inhuman outlook that tries to put a blindfold on the world from seeing such facts as US and allies are the main suppliers of those klashenkovs. in the name of free press the likes of Myers belittle humaniterians such us Bill Gates and Bono… ok i need to stop here and take a deep breath!!

My sister was waiting outside Mayflower hotel with so many others to see him walk out his hotel into his waiting car. She said when he got out of the hotel he was so nice to the crowd. He waved to the crowd with a smile on his face. He did not run into his waiting car like others. She even took his pics on her phone. I wish i was there myself. A housewife has beaten over 50 entries with her painful investment experience to win the top prize in this year’s “My Investment Story” competition.

Ms Annie Lok recounted how she sold a snack shop she and her husband had been running for their entire life for over $ 300,000 but lost it all after she was persuaded by her cousin to invest the money in shares which eventually became penny stocks when the market turned last year.

The money was intended to pay for the tuition fees of her son who was entering a well-known overseas university.

Ms Lok, together with nine other winners, will share their investment stories at an award presentation ceremony tonight to be hosted by the Chairman of the SFC, Mr Eddy Fong (Note1).

“The competition is a continued effort by the SFC to promote investor education. Through experience sharing, we hope the competition will help promulgate a healthy investment attitude and raise the public awareness of the associated risks before making investment decisions,” Mr Fong said.

“The winning stories provide some very useful lessons as to how gaining product knowledge, good risk management and proper attitudes toward investing can help make sound investment decisions,” he added.

The competition is organized jointly by the SFC and its media partners – Commercial Radio One and Sing Tao Daily. The winners were selected by a panel of judges.

Winners will share their investment experiences on Commercial Radio One programme “CrossTrade” every Tuesday and Thursday starting from 26 August. Winning entries will also be published in the Investment Weekly Magazine of Sing Tao Daily from the week of 25 August and on the SFC’s InvestEd website.

    Hi!

I’m looking for a LDS online dating site. I haven’t been able to find many. I’ve found some christian dating sites,
but I was wondering if there were any sites that were geared towards Later Day Saints religion. It’s hard to
find a lot of other LDS online daters wanting to chat – at least, I haven’t been able to. Does anyone know of any?

Like I said, I’ve tried some christian ones, but not really what I’m looking for. I really hope they’re out there!

If not a dating site, perhaps any type of chat or group related to LDS.

    thanks!
