I have been reading all the comments the past couple of days, its hard to keep up, love all the personal stories, experiences etc. Anyways I wanted to say that I am really enjoying all this. Gin, the Bernos blog has digressed. Positively, if I might say as the participation is somewhat off subject at times. Like I have said in the past we are planning to add one major feature to the site. Bernos Press; the press is not a discussion forum nor a blog, its both at the same time. And it is going to be fully user generated much like a discussion forum.
It is the right next step to take, as we have made a nice little community on the blog. My favorite aspect of the community is the demography! which seems to be from 25 to 35 in age, have been away from Ethiopia for a while and at the same time love to remember their childhood. This by the way is consistent with the Bernos theme . Theme is a good word, not to serious!
There is something oxymoronic about writing about Bernos, much like Art about Art, if you get what I mean. So the press thing, which is a way that a user can post their own thoughts as opposed to contributors controlling the topic and the users digressing from the topic somehow. I really like the idea and speaking in layman's term the right software is out there now; WordPress's bbPress . The plan was to get it out before Dec 1st but I was scared that it might be too fast, we don't have nearly the amount of people willing to participate in the Press as its necessary to make it successful. If you have ever seen CBS’ 60 minutes you know the clock that counts backwards. kClick kClick kClick it goes counting down the second till the show is over. A good friend of mine once told me that he started carrying an umbrella to work followed by saying 'it’s all down hill from here.'
Are we counting down the seconds till the REAL SHOW, the one we call our life, is over. This past weekend one of my favorite journalists, Ed Bradley died at a tender age of 65. My grandmother once told me that her life is going to Leqso Bet. She saw the deaths of eight of her siblings all her friends and their husbands. Yes, she has been around since the dinosaur ages. I’ve taken notice on this here blog a lot of you Abesha wondoch are talking about what you want in an Abesha set and I think it’s time for us setoch to talk about what we look for in a man. I once heard what a man wants is, Carmen Electra in the bedroom, Julia Childs in the kitchen, and a mix of Condi rice/Halley Berry at cocktail parties. Then he woke up!
In my book there is nothing better than a confident, borderline arrogant (not an ass), street smart and a brainiac at the same time, someone who is opinionated as hell and always in control of his life. Now that’s a man for you! It's alright for a guy to be sensitive as long as he's not pulling out a handkerchief every second. Have I met this perfect Abesha man? I did once upon a second, wrong timing, but I know he exists in all men, Abesha and non- Abesha’s. Dating is a game, you fantasize a list of what you want in him and he does the same. Then it’s a matter of matching the numbers with the letters and hoping to find the right match so the game can begin. Continue reading ‘Dear Abesha Wondoch’

I would go run to him to do one of the many things that he does to entertain or teach me. That is when he would put his hand on my back and start singing.
Aba woldiye gedel gebu biye!
Shiskerekeru bedem tenekeru!
Shiskerekeru bedem tenekeru!
Achuldra achuldra! Achuldra achuldra!
He would tap my back consequently with the beat of the song that he is singing. I never knew the meaning but it was engaging and witty. Who is Aba woldye? And why the hell are we singing about him?
That was my grandfather; he could answer any question I ever asked him. He knows everything, so why didn’t I ever ask him the meaning of the song?
Actually I feel the same way about all the songs from our childhood; how come the jib is in the gedel and why is after our Qit? Seriously need the answer, still do!
The songs of our childhood, oh the very many songs! I never really thought about the number of songs we knew? Continue reading ‘ere lijoch lijoch…’

One fine day, I went into some coffee shop and got excited to see another fellow Abesha behind the counter, but, “Can I help you?” bela Kum aderegechign. So naturally I placed my order in English. The odd thing was, the girl was giving me that funny attitude some Abeshoch give others when they wanna say, “ Amaregna eyawekesh be’engelizegna atekenachi!,” which felt especially odd in this case, so I got my coffee and went about my business.
Later that week, I went back to get my daily caffeine-intake and I got served n’all in English again and then I thought, Hey, she’s at work and the language of the land is English (sometimes French in our case) so it ain't a big deal. Except this time, I got my coffee and I can hear girlie and her friend chatting… ” Tey enji endesu atebeyat….ye’gna aynet sira yalat yimesleshal?…Aye, yeteshale sira yalat temeslalech…..and went on and on….and suddenly kept quiet when I turned around to leave. But it got me thinking about the saying… “ Nobody could make you feel inferior without your consent”…except in this case, they were doing that all on their own.
