Romance Ethio style 279 Comments

There’s romance then there’s romance Ethio style. How he addresses me and talks to me in both Amaregna and English in itself leaves me speechless. When he say’s yene konjo, nefse, or ewedeshaleu it melts the skin off of me but I’m not selfish I give as much as I receive if not more.

I hear a lot of complaints from both the Ethio men and women ‘that there’s not enough romance in their relationship.‘ I think people seem to overlook the day to day gestures of love as a given he/she is owed that. No you’re not! You don’t have to walk on the beach or sit in the car overlooking the Grand Canyon to be romantic. Also romance is not what men give and women receive it’s a two way street. Ethiopian Meatballs 944 Comments

meatballI like integrating American food with Ethiopian. One of the things I remember growing up was the mini meatballs on toothpicks that were served Hors d’œuvre like at wedding and birthday parties.

We would always have them and gibjza’s in our place… I really loved them, and everyone I know loved them too; they disappeared really fast!

Ethiopian meatballs are distinct in comparison to the rest of the world meatballs. For example, Swedish meatballs are too soft for me, and the Italians one are too big and hold so much moisture.

It’s great that Ethiopians in the US still make them the way I had them growing up, I see these meatballs mostly at weddings, not so much at birthday parties. Continue reading ‘Ethiopian Meatballs’

A Podcast for a Fallen Comrade

I have often referenced memory in correlation with our senses. When we think memory, we don’t necessarily think about the sensory stimuli that inputs the data to our brains.

However, everything is sensed; we live by our senses. From the little I know, the sensory system is so complicated that no one really knows everything.

There are two types of memories, short and long term; short term memory is limited to 8 bits of memory and long term memory has infinite levels.

When I think of senses I think of the five and in which I receive them, my hands feel, my eyes see, and my tongue tastes; & etc but the reality is that everything is in the brain, they call it the sensory reception. There is a nerve pathway from the source of reception to the brain. Ie., I am to assume that all our senses are located in our brain; ya love is in the brain. Continue reading ‘A Washint Melody!’

A Friend Anywhere 102 Comments

ethiopian-coffee-ceremonyI was trying to find where I can use the internet when a voice asked, “Habesha nesh?” I smiled and confirmed. He was an Ethiopian who worked at the Zurich airport. I was surprised to find another Ethiopian.

I was similarly surprised once when I had a layover in Minnesota and I noticed there were so many Ethiopians working there. It was just something I didn’t expect to find. He introduced himself as Biratu Debella. We exchanged the expected greetings and he asked where I was going and so on. Shortly there after, he offered to get me ‘ shay/ buna.’

I tried to politely decline since I really needed to use the internet but he insisted and I gave in. Consequently with the coffee he offered to also buy me lunch, even though I just said I already had lunch. Continue reading ‘A Friend Anywhere’
