Dawit's Big Day! 19 Comments

The dude is really old; you see I found a photo tagged in the bernos facebook account. I thought it was some kind off advertisement for a band.

Hmm, the moment frozen in the picture captured the essence of what the people where feeling at the time. Whatever they were watching looked to me like a hip-hop concert of A Tribe called Quest or something.

You know those few seconds you could never forget no matter how long ago it was; those twinkling of an eye when you realize that you are truly happy right there.

And then I realized the man in the middle, still hairless, as bald as he is, is actually Dawit. He looked so young in the picture that I couldn’t stop laughing. You know!

The Big Day, it was his birthday last Sunday and we went to celebrate it. We met up for brunch in Georgetown, as usual few people were late but no big deal. We laughed and ate. And then we all went for a walk in Georgetown by the harbor. Continue reading ‘Dawit's Big Day!’

Cleaning House 41 Comments

trash bag

On a recent Sunday morning, with the rain coming down hard and the idea of leaving my apartment looking grim, I decided to do some housecleaning. Little did I know that it has been quite sometime since I have done that kind of cleaning and that the chore will end up taking more time that I was prepared to offer.

Maybe it was the despondency that comes with a relentless rain on the weekend (the last day of the weekend to boot), but I ended up doing a housecleaning that had less to do with dusting and scrubbing and more with self questioning and yet another attempt at emotional cleansing. (Confession # 1: I have an unmatched tendency, or gift if you may, to elevate simple matters of everyday life to unlikely moments of spiritual and emotional discoveries. Don’t ask me why. I just do). Two New Bernos Tees Now on Sale

Maintaining our ‘Empowering Africa’ theme, we are delighted to announce two new bernos tees. The new bernos concepts are now on sale.

I heart Africa Tshirt

The first seen above, if we were to reconstruct the ‘I Heart _______’ theme the bernos way it would be to morph the shape of our land into the heart. The heart both symbolically and emotionally signify love; our love for Africa.

The bernos I Heart Africa design simply denotes the love people throughout the world have for the land. As simple as one can have a devoted sense of adoration for the soil man originated from.

Accordingly bernos presents our version of ‘I Heart Africa’ on Crème American Apparel Tee for sale at only 21.99$.

Bernos Made in Africa

The second concept seen above, is an acknowledgment of where we were made. A copyright for the making of children, from personality to culture to everything Africa represent. As diverse and as complicated the African continent is, her pieces are made in Africa.

The design in essence is a stamp saying ‘Made in Africa.’ The font used is Helvetica, which is one of the more popular fonts in fashion and design. We think that the font is in consensus with current branding, as is the little © symbol; we used both the font and symbol to reinforce the concept, modestly the African brand.

Thus bernos presents Made in Africa on Baby Blue American Apparel Tee for sale at only 20.99$. Continue reading ‘Yah Africa’

Watch Larry King Live on Thursday!

Ethiopia Reads

I watched the final episode of Oprah’s Big Give, a show about charity and giving back last Sunday. And I was inspired; I was thinking about issues that people were having around them.

Sorry to be ambiguous, but I am talking about the state of mind; depression, lack of fulfillment, lack of confidence and many other issues that affect everyone especially here in the US.

I was thinking that the no one is incapable of giving a little; the consensus on the show was you don’t have to give money to give big. You just have to share what you can, it can be time or thoughts or ideas. It could be encouraging words. Continue reading ‘Inspired: Big Giver’

Creativity Solace 67 Comments

Picture source Eric LAFFORGUE whois photography I admire

There are a few things that I am grateful for. I might not like my job today. I might be unhappy with a friend or might have some girl trouble.

My solace is and has been being creative, in cooking, in my work when they give me an interesting project. Other projects, like bernos or some charity project I am working on or designing or even trying to program on the web; being creative via writing, writing to express my feelings at a certain time.

For instance the process could be more art than the final product. When I am making pizza on my new pizza stone at home. I experiment on the dough making process. How long should I let it rise, how thin should I make the pizza, and does ricotta cheese work with prociutto.

I am driving and I am thinking about some issues that annoy me, I want to write about it and share it with the bernos readers but I don’t really have time to write it and I write it eitherway and people think I am crazy or think I don’t write in grammatical annality.

Sometime I prefer how thoughts run together and in comparison or the poetic sense. I never thought about writing or was a fan of good literature, don’t even understand it. I do know what I like, I like to know what people feel, and I am not that concerned too much with the poetry they express it in. I like a lot of facts, details and plots in the shortest amount of time. I like a lot of ‘I feel, I believe and blah blahs.’ Continue reading ‘Creativity Solace’
