Picture source Eric LAFFORGUE whois photography I admire

There are a few things that I am grateful for. I might not like my job today. I might be unhappy with a friend or might have some girl trouble.

My solace is and has been being creative, in cooking, in my work when they give me an interesting project. Other projects, like bernos or some charity project I am working on or designing or even trying to program on the web; being creative via writing, writing to express my feelings at a certain time.

For instance the process could be more art than the final product. When I am making pizza on my new pizza stone at home. I experiment on the dough making process. How long should I let it rise, how thin should I make the pizza, and does ricotta cheese work with prociutto.

I am driving and I am thinking about some issues that annoy me, I want to write about it and share it with the bernos readers but I don’t really have time to write it and I write it eitherway and people think I am crazy or think I don’t write in grammatical annality.

Sometime I prefer how thoughts run together and in comparison or the poetic sense. I never thought about writing or was a fan of good literature, don’t even understand it. I do know what I like, I like to know what people feel, and I am not that concerned too much with the poetry they express it in. I like a lot of facts, details and plots in the shortest amount of time. I like a lot of ‘I feel, I believe and blah blahs.’

In films and novels, I like a lot of plots, lots of sensory input as opposed to a conversation and deep thought. The history of World War I to from the Russian perspective in less than two hours; ya sounds good to me.

I like going to plays, films, looking at photos via Flickr reading blogs and reading about how they make tires. To me the process is art, the fact that if the rubber is melted at a higher temperature it’s prone to have higher grip. I made that up. I went to a see Death of a Salesman about two weeks ago, it was depressing and powerful.

On photography

I am not a photographer I never have been, and sometimes I think that most photographers are full of BS as they just take shots. How creative are they? But there are many that I like and admire. I look at it from the perspective I know; you know from the design perspective.

Its 2 dimensional design and the same elements apply. Color, composition, perspective, contrast, texture and blah blah. I did know that professionals take these elements into consideration and most amateurs not.

I thought about buying a decent camera for a long time, because I wanted to learn how to take photos and make them appear they way I want them to appear. I know that a camera is a tool for 2-dimenstional design.

I bought a used Nikon D70 about 12 days ago, after spending about 2 months reading about cameras and talking to Beshou because she went through the process I went through a while back.

What I found out?

A camera is a tool, so you can make good photos with just about any camera, even the 100$ digital pocket cameras. The important thing is how much I am able to control the camera to make the images the way I want it to.

The Camera doesn’t matter.

I spent at least 30 hours over the last 12 days reading and experimenting on the process and learning how to control the camera. How to make the camera take a photo that has a small depth of field?

The whole process was very enjoyable and anal. Sometimes I wish I was more anal than I am because you know that anal people make really good art. I wrote about it two years ago.

Sometimes the idea and the subject overwhelm the process and a quick sketch is better. A simple deli sandwich with fresh roastbeef and mayo tastes could taste better than a steak from Ruth Chris. I have never been to Ruth Chris steak house but I have heard it’s very good.

I really like the picture you choose for this post. It reminded me of standing under a shaddy tree during late afternoon church prayers in Addis.

First nice picture and good thought, Nolawi…
    1. I get sometimes confused that “Is creativity more Experimenting or more Imagination?” I admire those who imagine first without physically seeing it or experiment.
    2. The “I …” part …is it to make connection with your audience ..?
    3. yeah, i also like stories with a lot of plot like “Till we meet again”, that started with World War I and end at the year 1980′s. I also like to read blogs but these days i feel like i am wasting time as the information on the Internet is too much provided that we have very short time.
    Just my thoughts..

I agree – no pun intended

sara – do share what is your passion?

    dawit- oh sharrup

like giargis church kedase aydele? lemat

I do not think I’m passionate about anything. I don’t get involved in anything deep enough for it to become a passion….thus my comment to want to become more creative…sigh… Everything I do is because I have to.

  9. 9 Dinich

The picture looks like the lady is begging for money……The camera man was decent enough not to take a picture of her face begging…..hence the side view…

    I know I could be totally wrong…

  10. 10 Nolawi

SHe is not begging she is praying in church!

  11. 11 Engda

    Dinich:

Ewnetem dinich! Dinich ras neger neh/nesh abo! Why would u assume that she’s begging for money? It’s obvious that the lady is praying!

  12. 12 petite

she or he ? how old do you think he or she is? i like the picture though!

“I am not a photographer I never have been”… hmm…nolawi, from the pictures you choose for many of your articles, i am forced to ignore the above words of yours. i think you have what it takes to be a good photographer!

That was my first impression as well, Dinich. Praying and begging are sort of “zemedoch”. Great shot though.

    ….interesting Nolawi…

…..of course the lady is begging……for forgiveness or sth..?….People begging for money don’t normally extend both hands out…

  16. 16 Nolawi

    ha funny!

  17. 17 Dinich

    Soj man, Long time….

I don’t see two hands or is it just my eyes…..but ur right….the Netela is too clean for the lady to be lemagn….loooooooooool

  18. 18 Mengedegna

I think the fact that photo is showing the lady’s left hand also suggests that she’s probably not praying, as it is uncommon for people there to receive with the left hand.

“the Netela is too clean for the lady to be lemagn….loooooooooool”
    – Dinich, I have seen zenaCH lemagnoch on more than one occasion.
