Love at 1st Sight?-II 72 Comments

This article is a follow-up from I

When I arrived at home that afternoon, I immediately jumped in the shower and soaked myself with cold water for almost 20 minutes. Though I had been shook up and very disturbed with the coincidence that took place just a few hours ago, I couldn't help but to think of Sara and the unforgettable moment we shared together the night before. But then suddenly my good conscience would take its turn and that I would find it hard to look at myself in the mirror without the pitiful QuAQ-iNTif kind of "TiZiBT".

"I had sex with my best friend's fiancé so what?" I said to the man in the mirror who was starring at me with disgust. And you damn right it was a good sex. Probably the best kind I ever had, I added.

"You are in deep shit you know that?" He replied, but this time with a heavier and scary tone of voice.

"What the hell am I supposed to do now ha? I can't go back in time and fix what happened the night before. I would if I could, but I can't. So just leave me the fuck alone, will ya?"

"I suggest you tell Girma the truth. He may not find it in his heart to forgive you, but at least you wouldn't be dishonest. After all, it wasn't really your fault. Had you known she was his fiancé, you wouldn't have done what you did. Or would you? So it was an honest mistake".

The man in the mirror suddenly managed to become a friend with some very good advice. Continue reading ‘Love at 1st Sight?-II’

Party Promo Guru's! 101 Comments

Marketing to the Ethiopian community is tricky. So tricky infact that only few businesses survive a prolonged period of time. Ethiopian Restaurants have distinctive marketing techniques that have worked for them. The successful ones use specific methodology to sustain their businesses.

Dukem Restaurant uses extreme advertising. I have heard that about 2% of the annual profit goes towards marketing and advertising; that's huge by Ethiopian standards. Some like Zeds Restaurant use traditional restaurant marketing techniques by targeting niche city publications, like the DC city paper. Others use entertainmen; by bringing musicians to perform consistently like that of a tchnique used by Roha Restaurant. Dama Restaurant believes in product; good food sells itself. Some use beautiful Ethiopian girls like I have mentioned in the past.  All use multitudes of techniques. Most do not believe in customer service IMHO!

We know the successful restaurants, but more so are ones we haven’t heard of; those that fail or are not successful. Continue reading ‘Party Promo Guru's!’

"Simply say a small prayer for the person who sent you this;

Father, God bless this person in whatever it is that you know he or she may need this day!’

Then send it on to ten other people! Within hours ten people have prayed for you, and you caused a multitude of people to pray to God for others. Sit back and watch the 'Will of God' work in your life for doing the thing that you know 'He loves'."

I hope there are exactly ten people reading this, so that I am not cursed. Like most, I would scan through my forwards after forwards of emails like these one, and delete them! I am sure most of you do the same; nonetheless I still get these forwards – lots of them from well meaning friends. Love at 1st Sight? 108 Comments

After 10 years of living in the United States, I returned to Addis Ababa to be the best man on my best friend's (Girma's) wedding, but only to find out there were missing things and things that mattered the most and weighed heavily on my democratized soul. Addis Ababa had changed quite a bit since I left at the age of 17. Back in my old days, the closest we came to going out on a date was to a neighborhood Shai beet. One ET birr was good enough to entertain a lady. All we needed was one SHai for me and one WOTET for her. After that, we would be on our way to heaven. Now things are different. The women are almost a different breed than the ones that came before them. Their beauty and physical attributes were both remarkable. It seemed that they no longer suffer from the typical Ethiopian characteristics of YeluGNta.

The youngsters were way a head of their games. Most of them attempt to implicate the western style of living.

On a Friday or Saturday night, I would go out to the bars and nightclubs with my oldest friends just to be amazed by the beauty of my Ethiopian sisters. The women always managed to look extremely attractive, and it was obvious that there would be some men who would continually go to such places only to satisfy their sexual desire. However, I promised myself that I would not attempt to engage in any sexual activities with any of the girls I see at these bars. The safest sex at the time was no sex at all. Period. That was my philosophy and I intended to stick to it. Continue reading ‘Love at 1st Sight?’
