Whenever it’s a holiday of any sort, I get a lot of text messages. One would assume it’s a great thing that we all have such good friends that want to wish us ‘happy whatever…’
Hanukah, Gena, Millennium and the many others holidays; I would get a ‘Happy New Year’ text from that girl that I went out with for one night one year and seven months ago; even though I haven’t seen or heard from her in more than half a year; she remembers me New Years and Labor Day.
One would assume that I am very special that I left such an impression on her after just one evening that I would get a lifetime of holiday text messages; or is it? Continue reading ‘Holiday Whatever’

How do you want to die in the cut-throat world of business? Seems like most of us prefer the “familiar” blade.
Think about it, how many Ethiopians /Africans have access to the internet?
An Ethiopian lawyer limiting her client base to just Ethiopians is committing suicide. The same theory applies to most businesses that cater only to a niche clique. Nonetheless, we persist on that same tried & true road. Why? Perhaps it’s comfort; the negative perspective being fear. Most of us prefer the model of staying within our own – those boundaries drawn long ago & cultivated by similar culture, language, race etc… – tides that bind. Very few of us venture out side this territory. Why not try “the road not taken” by most?
“I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference!” – Frost
Now, admittedly, there are both advantages as well as disadvantages to staying within the Niche. The obvious being, who we are is indicative of what we do. If we market and work close to ourselves, it evidently makes us better in what we do. A sales man can sell better than a plumber. A painter is more creative than a doctor. It’s Monday morning and I had to run a couple of errands before I got to work. I was seeing a physical therapist because my neck was sore because of the amount of time I spent on the computer and the car accident I had over two weeks ago.
The chiropractor gave me a massage and I was feeling relaxed and ready to finalize a few personal projects I have been slow to finish because I was working on a major conference in November I work on every year. A few people had called and or emailed to ask how things were going on the task list.
I kept telling them you know this is the busiest I have ever been and the fact that I was in a car accident recently didn’t help much. I told them in one week I will finish my work and I will get back in the groove of things.
I told my boss that I had to drop my car off to the auto body shop and pick up a rental, after the therapy I dropped my car off and got a rental. And I was happy, am relaxed and as I was driving to work I was marking down my checklist, its 10 am and I have accomplished a few things already.
I had to make a couple of phone calls to give updates on my situation. I got to work, I am thinking thank god this is the last week on this conference because a few more projects and I can relax a bit. Continue reading ‘Frozen Stiff’

You know the one that is used in reference to professional woman; woman you can obtain for money.
I knew the word growing up but never used it; it’s a nasty word that has evolved in the Amharic language to become part of the everyday vocabulary. S this and S that…
Nowadays it’s the norm for most Ethiopians to vacation in Ethiopia. Most go there at least once every few years. And obviously people are going to talk about the changes, the population growth in Addis, the number of new buildings… and of course the S‘s
S this and S that… Apparently S’s are hot, amazing looking, and are everywhere. Some Ethiopian males travel to Ethiopia quite often because they can get attention from a certain type of girls they’re not used to. Ostensibly, a short borcham can get model looking abesha girl just because his money is worth ten times the local birr. Continue reading ‘The ‘S’ Word!’

Of
My rebellious mind…………
Sometime I do think about things
Usually, there is no problem but me.
I think I am afraid of everything but God.
Well if I am afraid of everything then
I admit! I am afraid of God too.
Everything scares me!
This is non enjoyable life-span.
And I always want to go against it.
But I couldn’t.
Why?…………. Continue reading ‘Just Thought’
