Ethiopian soccer players

After the much awaited Millennium chefera in Ethiopia, the next deges has to be in South Africa.

On May 15, 2004, history was made as it was announced that South Africa will host the 2010 Fifa Football World Cup. History was also made as I started a savings account.

Thanks to a new policy to rotate the event between football confederations, the world’s premier sporting event will be held on African soil for the first time in the history of the great game. South Africa, the home of Nelson Mandela, out voted Egypt, Libya, Morroco and Tunisia to win the great honor.

Besides the inevitable dent in my bank account, sold car and arrata beder, I can only thing of the positive effects of this momentous occasion. The world cup is only the most watched event in the world ( yemen olympics?) not to mention the incredible socio-economic benefit. For a change, the world cup will put Africa on the map for something positive!

Preparation

Our bafana bafana brothers are preparing to put on quite a show with 10 major venues to be used in Bloemfontein, Cape Town , Durban, Johannesburg, Kimberley, Nelspruit , Orkney, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria and Rustenburg. I have to say the photographs look absolutely breath-taking, second to none…. watch out Europe!

Five new stadiums are being built for the tournament (three match venues and two practice grounds), and five of the existing venues are being upgraded. Construction costs are expected to be R8.4bn (around $1.5bn). Needless to say, the revenue generated by this occasion is going to be much, much more. With improved public transport infrastructure, and increased emphasis on the safety and security of local and international tourists, this promises to be quite an event.

Of course preparations are not without obstacles as, some FIFA execs (including Franz Beckenbauer- haters) have expressed concern over South Africa’s preparations and even complained about ‘the slums‘ you know the stuff we are ‘famous’ for. Only to be silenced by Sepp Blatter re-iterationg that “Plan A…Plan B…Plan C is that the 2010 World Cup will be stage in South Africa.”

Rain or shine ‘ I’ll bet on shine,’ the world cup is going to South Africa. The most important question is are you? And if you are not can you send me J?

Memories and Predictions

Ethiopian soccer playersPerhaps it is unfair that a continent of 51 nations gets 6 berths (up one from last year) in the world cup, but lets stay positive people. African nations have been making their presence know more and more in the last two decades. Who can forget the Cameroon of 1990, with Roger Miller dancing by the corner flag as his goals took his beloved to the quarter finals? I still remember the stunning strike from Okocha in ’98 as Nigeria beat none other than Maradona’s Argentina. Senegal were

magnifique in 2002 defeating the then defending champs, France. Ghana, the black stars in 2006, carrying a whole continent with pride and grace…Chale! I am over it, Brazil is our brother from another mother.

Maybe it is too optimistic to wish for an african nation to win the World Cup in 2010, but I’m a positive person! I sure hope Cameroon reach the final with Brazil and Samuel Eto scores the winner after dribbling Ronaldhino and Kaka.

Ye Hager Guday

Chances are Ethiopia will not make the world cup but we can take some positive incentive from this and hope our great, great, great, great, great grandkids can one day watch the world cup in Ethiopia ‘I kid I kid.’ Seriously, when do you think Ethiopia will host the world cup? I say 3050 ‘I kid I kid.’

Seriously, seriously this time, how many Ethiopians do you think will get a chance to enjoy the world cup from South Africa? Does the average Ethiopian (in Ethiopia and elsewhere) have the means to go to South Africa? Do you think other African nations will show up in numbers? Or will it be the usual suspects from the West, Europe and far, far east ‘ya gotta love Japanese tourists?‘ I wonder….

    Meron,

    A good post… yawim from a 21 yewar old girl….am impressed.

If any african team makes it to the semi-finals next time around, I will celebrate. But, who knows, I still see a fair chance of one of them winning the finals. The good news is more and more african players are playing in Europe these days and that will be a big boost for the National teams when world cup comes around.

I have high hopes for Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon….but 2010 is too far to do any reasonable prediction…

This just brought back some frustrating memories from last years world cup, Brazil V.S. Ghana and the most upsetting one France V.S. Italy. Anyway, thanks for the nice read Meron.

Nice post Meron. I am planning to go to South Africa for the cup. We will show the world how we Africans do IT! Hopefully one of the African teams will make it all the way to the final and actually win. Woudn’t that be something!!!

any african nation winning would be a dream come true. it being on african soil is amazing in itself. i’m sure there is going to be a huge african crowd showing up, since there are no worries of obtaining visa’s and such.

  7. 7 Dinich

Good to hear from you, Kiki. Have no doubt you are doing great in the big city.

Ke Meron ataTayign…my point is that most 21 year old girls are not much into soccer….did I make it worse….All 21 year old soccer fan girls will rise up now.

Good one Meronye! I totally agree with Dinich I would not have expected an article about sports from you. Not because you’re 21 but you just don’t seem like the sportsy type lol.

I’m not a big fan of any sport but I love looking at a whole bunch of fit men letting their testosterone do the talking on the field. I’m the one who will get on your last nerve asking “what are they doing now?” or “what’s the score and what does it mean?” but you will never hear me ask “why are they wearing different uniforms?” I’m not that clueless about sports. In all honesty I can hear the sounds errrrrr, whoooooosh, bam, feeeerrrrrrrr, tekom, tekom, tekom, Baboosh, kabam, splat….when I imagine sports.

I only go to live sports because someone has talked me into it or I just want the excitement of the stadium. I will never watch sports on tv unless there are a great group of sports fans, in the room, making noise and I just want to be a part of something I totally don’t understand lol. With all this said and done I wouldn’t mind going to South Africa for a vacation during the world cup or not.

Considering the high crime rate in SA what type of security do they intend on having, I wonder.

  10. 10 Nolawi

I think Ethiopia has the possibility to make the world cup team in the next four world cups, that is our lifetime..

Second one of the reasons than an African team hasn’t won the world cup is because of racism, if the europeans had it their way no african team would participate… why should they they are monkeys anyways…

    Meronisha,

Great article…and yes, I might be there since my Aunti is South African and I have a place to stay, loving family, etc etc.

I just hope African teams don’t get bribed or give up once they start losing a match down only one score. I mentioned this on another blog before, watch the French team. During one game, the only caucasian was Ribery….tells you that they should represent an African nation. Most of the dudes are from Islands of the French colonies.

African country will be in the semifinals, guarantee.

One correction though, how many countries are in Africa (51????).

  12. 12 Dinich

Two things must happen before Ethiopia represents Africa on world stage.

One is some Ethiopian players should make it to bigger leagues, especially Europe. Europe is the best practice ground for any soccer player not because Europeans play better but because they have money to bring in all the best players from around the world and playing with those players is the best experience you can ever have in professional soccer.

The other thing that should happen is that the Ethiopian soccer clubs should be commercialized to the point of bringing players from outside Ethiopia and paying them good money. That way the players in Ethiopia will face tough competition in the league.

Technically Ethiopians are good at soccer because we have a good soccer base just like Brazil where everybody grows up playing soccer but professional soccer is what we do not have. All we need is money money money. If you can spare some $ 30 mill for me, you have my assurance that I can take a team composed of 100% Ethiopian players at least to the quarter finals of the 2014 world cup…..

Great great post Meron! I too am impressed. Coming from a soccer crazy family, I am a huge fan myself. Not as much as my mom tho. I have a very very soccer crazy mom. Since she came over I had to add all those soccer channels, no more ‘What not to wear’ or National Geographics for me on Saturdays, it is KUAS EYALE ?? So I don’t think I will miss the ONE in the Motherland. Besides, I have promissed my mom to take her.

After having a great news from her doctor (great progress after a big operation) the first thing she said was, ”EWAAAY, Egziabiher gizé yesseTegn yenanten firé endayina South Africa yalem wantcha enday new”.

Nolawi, very true about racism. Bichluma lela neber mignotachew, you know they are collecting DNA & stuff from those young Africans ” to find out what makes them such great player”… will have to ask for the details … they are seriously doing it… most probably to transfer what they can to theirs!!

Liliye, your mom sounds like a joy and I’m glad her surgery went well. You two must be a scene during a game. That’s so nice your taking her to SA for the game you’re a sweet daughter. Is it true the most violent fans are soccer fans? I heard that some place.

  16. 16 ababiru

Meron, I didn’t know you played soccer. Well, you live and learn.

Those of you hoping for an African team to win the World Cup, I say don’t hold your breath. It’s going to be a long time. But definitely this is one of their best shot. As for Ethiopia, where are kids supposed to play? Yeseferu meda hulu bet tesertobetal. Sad, but true.

As for cheering for agains African teams, I was in addis for the world cup before the last one. Almost all the whatsupoch were cheering against USA. They were doing everything they can to show they were from USA, but cheering against the team. That’s the next worse thing.

  17. 17 zelabaju

I have been following african football for a while,
and i can tell you that there is very very little chance that we made it to world cup in our lifetime. The region that have the greatest potential is west africa, because they really love that sport , and they are able to produce players with great physical qualities (wich is not our case, our players merely deserve the label of athletes).

I think that region, if better organized, would outshine the others, even the wealthier North Africa.

  18. 18 dawitm

if west africans players who play professional in europe play for their countries, i think they have best shot of getting title. i dont think east africans (including ethiopia)are ready for world cup.

  19. 19 Meron

I agree I think Ghana might actually make it!!! Well I just hope and pray they make it to final…
not to knock ethiopia but I dont think they’ll make it to the final in our lifetime…sorry Nolawi

  20. 20 dawitm

i also think cameroon, senegal, nigeria, ivory coast have great players to make it to final. even south africa is not that bad. the north africans have also great players that wil take them to world cup as well. hey does anyone know if salmon kalou from ivory coast still with chelsea…?

  21. 21 Dinich

I am a die hard Brazil fan and I want Brazil to win every time but I honestly don’t think it is unrealistic to expect an African team to win the 2010 world cup. First of all you don’t have to be the best to go to the finals. If that is the case Brazil would win the world cup every time.

I see the FIFA world ranking to be the best measure of a team’s strength. I don’t adhere to the numbers strictly but I find it to be a very good indicator and my rule of thumb is that any team within the top 20 on the FIFA ranking has a fair shot on being the champion at the world cup finals. Italy was # 13 last year when it won the world cup and we all know they won but they were not the best.

Cameroon is # 16 right now. Nigeria and Invory Coast are getting close to twenty. Besides, the world cup is three full years away and three years is enough time for real growth.

  22. 22 emebet

As for cheering for agains African teams, I was in addis for the world cup before the last one. Almost all the whatsupoch were cheering against USA. They were doing everything they can to show they were from USA, but cheering against the team

ababiru. Firrr firrr. that is so true. i think no matter where you live, as an african, you will cheer for an african team until they are out of the runnings then you cheer for any country that is not a superpower, then we go by size of country (ie. Croatia), then whoever has never won before. i don’t know if that is how other people cheer for teams, but that is my strategy.

  23. 23 lovejones

    Dawitm,

Yes, Kalu is still with Chelsea FC. He’s hurt now, that’s why you don’t see him in the games.

  24. 24 dawitm

    lovejones, thanks.

  25. 25 Nolawi

    22,
    agreed…

there is no irony in teh whatsupoch comment bakeh ababiru!

  26. 26 Dinich

    #22

So, you always support first Africans then the underdogs. That is not a bad strategy. I agree that is how most abeshoch go.

Mine is a little bit different. I root for the Africans until it is time to play with Brazil. Believe it or not I felt guilty for rooting for Brazil the last time Ghana played Brazil but I just couldn’t help it. It is like when you fall in love with someone and you know it is not the right person for you. That is exactly how I felt when Brazil and Ghana played. I just couldn’t help my love for Brazil.

My friends can’t believe it but I tell them ….hakim kelklognal ye afrika budin endaldegif. ye afrika budin medegef cheguara beshita yasketilal bilognal…..Of course that is a joke.

  29. 29 meron

Dinich im so disappointed in you…brazil?? out of all teams brazil?? why oh why??? and against ghana?? NO WAY!!!! i dont believe you!!!! if there is one team i hate its brazil!!! i dont even know what to say to you…you are a sell out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. 30 dawitm

    ditto!

Dinich, brazil is way overrated bra

  31. 31 Dinich

    Meron,

That is what I always get from my friends. Why? I just can’t look at Robinho and them doing all the fancy work and not be a fan…..impossible….They simply stole my heart….

    Dawitm,

I agree Brazil is overrated but they are still the best. Overrating almost always happens when you are the best.

  32. 32 dawitm

    Dinich,

in my opinion, brazil is not “the best” anymore (it used to be). i think european soccer is more exciting than brazil now. either spain or england is the best now. if i have to choose i will choose spain. the only thing brazil is good is that they gave us ronalidino of the mighty barcelona :)

  33. 33 Dinich

    C’mon Dawit,

Europe? C’mon now. England is full of Africans and Spain is full of Brazillians….If you like la liga, you have to know a lot of la liga players are Brazillians….

  34. 34 dawitm

hey dinich, give it up man :) don’t tell me european soccer is not exciting. i can’t say the same about brazilian teams. if you don’t agree with that, i guess it is a matter of taste. as long as european teams bring us good soccer, i dont care where they bring the players from. that is why u got to love them. besides, europeans have their own players too. the other thing to consider in this mix is also the role of good coaches in putting together a team … i would say europe has better coaches too.

as i said before, brazil is losing its dominance. one thing i agree is that brazil is still producing some good players. but its national team or the teams inside brazil are not that good as compared to european teams.

  35. 35 Dinich

    Dawitm,

Agree man. My favorite league is La Liga of Spain of course. I don’t follow Brazil league that much because they are not as strong. But the reason is if there is any good player in a Brazil Club he will be scooped by one of the European clubs before he turns 19 for millions of $$$$. As a result the Brazil league is not as exciting as the leagues in Europe. That is why Brazil has more than 800 professional Soccer players playing outside Brazil mostly in Europe. They keep producing the players but they can’t pay them enough to keep them in a Brazil club.

Europe is where all the money is and that is where all the players from Africa, Latin etc..go to make money and that is why it is exciting. But you have to keep in mind even though the league in Spain is probably the strongest in the world, when it comes to world cup, Spain is invisible for the most part because all the players go back to play for their countries.

  36. 36 dawitm

    ok

  37. 37 meron

    dinich,

ay beka ene ena ante should just agree to disagree. everyone knows the english premier league is the most exciting, competitive i.e. strongest right now. Look at how many english teams make it to the champions league. becha tewew.

  38. 38 Dinich

No, Meron on this one we can agree to agree because I agree Premier’s league is very strong. Spain and England have the top leagues in my book. Italians, Germans and the Dutch are good too. Not only in my book but that is what most say. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to watch them all as every week there are at least 10 games in each league. I settled for Spain because that is where most of my favorite players are but if I had the time I would watch the Premiers league too.

But, yah, we agree to disargee on Brazil being the best.

    Cheers

  39. 39 zelabaju

    Dinich,

I wouldn’t have the courage to say it the first, but i am also a Brazil supporter. I had very confused feelings on the ghana-brazil match.Ghana is nice to look at playing. If it was against Cameroon for example, i would be for Brazil 100%.

I wonder how someone who had played football can not support Brazil. That i can’t understand. Also, i can’t understand how, if you like that game, you can support Germany, who does not “play”, they implement some tactical plan with no creativity..i don’t know if that is a game (on the last world cup that seems to change though).

  40. 40 dawitm

meron, i agree with you english premier league is one of the best (with la liga of spain as the best)….. i know i know, i am biased, cuz i favor spain :) but who can blame me, with fc barcelona and real madrid playing the best soccer. anyway, leave dinich & zelabaju with their brazil, cuz they seem to be stuck up for a dying dinosaur :) (sorry guys, please get it, brazil is no more the “best” …ok). remeber, italy got the last world cup not brazil ok…. it did not even qualify to finals. so, we have to agree to disagree that europe is where soccer is in 21 century ok :)

  41. 41 Dinich

Hey, Dawitm, at least we both love Barca. Barca is my team too at the club level. So we are not far off.

    Cheers,

  42. 42 dawitm

Dinich, that is right…. barca rules.

from the english premier league my second favorite team arsenal (chelsea is my fav)is playing good and leading now.

  43. 43 wudnesh

Diniye, erre ayzogn! what’s color got to do with supporting a team? I’d support England whatever African country they play against.
dawitm, Chelsea? lol, don’t tell me coz they play good….did u pick the richest London team or what? To make it worse, u add Arsenal!! Dini, pick my team for him benAtih :P

  44. 44 dawitm

lol wudnesh … i didn’t pick chelsea cuz they are rich or the russian bought the team :) hahaaa i picked them cuz they are good. they won league championship back to back 05 & 06… so they are not doing bad ehh. arsenal is now leading the premier league like up to now. so, you gotta love them. by the way, who is your team?

lol dinich picking your team :) but me and dinich love barca of spain, so you have to be with us ehhhh. don’t tell me you go for brazil plzzz :)

  45. 45 wudnesh

DawitM…..I only support the best (as Dini knows, uhu uhu)…the one and only, the team of the strongest (ehem)..of Gary Neville,Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Cristiano Ronaldo…am sure you know now, but just to add, yea, my hero Alex Ferguson’s team! ;)

  46. 46 dawitm

lol wudnesh, nice try girl :) yeah i know alex Alex Ferguson’s team. i think these guys are just ok, but i would not call them the “best” unless you are die-hard manchester united fan. what do you think of this line up huh …. john terry, frank lampard, salmon kalou, mike essein, ricardo carvalo……, didier and many more …? this is an amzing lineup :) too, don’t you think?

hey, manchester united is an ok team but not that great anymore. just like liverpool, it is a has been team :) if u look at socreboard and cureent stats for the league, arsenal is still on top.

  47. 47 Dinich

    Wud,

How is Man U the best if they only won two champions league titles in more than 50 years? Compare that to 9 times for Real Madrid and 7 times for Milan….

I am looking for a better team for you. You deserve better….

  48. 48 rush

And 5 times for Liverpool ;) almost 6 but we will not speak of that moment.

  49. 49 Senaserate

Meron how is it you say your optimistic yet you have no confidence what so ever that we could make it to the world cup some day? What a shame. I assure you that some day we will triumph as champions.

  50. 50 wudnesh

DM, the line up,…who r they again? :P
To be honest, I like Chelsea better than Liverpool and Arsenal. Heheh, don’t just see that Arsenal is on the top now…Man U is known to play best when we are a lil behind.
Diniye, indie, after all the talk we had in BP, tell me you didn’t say that! Man U fans are loyal….all the way! You know the ‘in sickness and health’ type :)
And since when did u start ignoring the value of good games (how they played etc.)…Goals (scores) are half the story eko!
    Rush…lol, ok, I’ll assume u were rushing when u mention Liverpool :P

Senaserate, i think you got it all wrong. i don’t think the issue here is about “confidence”. confidence is good, but empty ‘confidence’ without being realistic is being unreasonable. meron is optimistic but she is also being realistic. there is a difference there.

  56. 56 wudnesh

DM..you r on! what/how much do you want to bet? moi is serious.

  57. 57 dawitm

lol wud, aight anything you want :)
seriously, if you lose, i want you to write

if i lose, i will write Manchester United Rules x 10

    how about that…?

  58. 58 wudnesh

lol :) (reminds me of school in Addis)…..I even notice Chelsea is in Capitals while Man U isn’t..hhehhe.
How about, your suggestion, PLUS….You buy me the new (Project Roots) Tee….and of course I’ll buy you one should (uhu uhu )Chelsea win?

  59. 59 wudnesh

iffoyyyyy…huh, hahhahahaa…someone get me DawitM on board please!!!! hello…DMMMMMMM…..

and how happy I was at :
In truth, United were always in control and never looked ending this match with anything other than three points. ;)

  60. 60 dawitm

    haha wud :)

  61. 61 dawitm

big deal… so what :) ? anyway, MU is lucky Chelsea has been in deep s since middle of last week cuz it lost its star coach, jose mourino. bloody team is in confusion now… so now wonder they got beat by MU. unless they get their s together they are in more trouble, but i know they will bounce back.

anyway, MU won cuz they played better and you won too :)

but you know what arsenal did right? they won 5-0 and still on top

  62. 62 wudnesh

hehhee..at least be a good loser….stop talking and jot down MAN U RULES 10x will u? indie…am waitingggggg eko ;)
I bet you pretended u didn’t see the bet on the Tee…..hehhee, I guess deep down u knew they were gonna lose.
Arsenal….which one was that again? :P u know Westham will send them down.

Want to know the truth? Meron is a Chelsea fan….She doesn’t like the idea of MAN U RULES.

  69. 69 wudnesh

Tnx Meru…i know u were looking for an excuse to repeat what DM said…..DM, I like the way she wrote it (as it should have been)…in bold! Don’t listen to Diniye…we don’t have more Chelsea sympathizers.

  73. 73 Dinich

FIFA just announced the 30 nominees for the 2007 World Player of the World. I give it 90% that deservedly Kaka will be the man but the good news for Africa in this list is that 3 out of the 30 players (10%) are Africans…Drogba (Ivory Coast), Eto (Cameroon), and Essien( Ghana). That is a clear indication that Africa is well on its way to be competitive.

  74. 74 dawitm

hey dinich, kaka is ok, but i am disappointed ronaldinho is not nominated. i am glad the 3 africans are nominated…..mike essein and didier drogba deserve it too.

  75. 75 dawitm

hahaaaa my bad….he is nominated but i mean he is better player than kaka for sure. hey that is my opinion

  76. 76 Dinich

I agree, dawitm, overall Ronaldinho is probably a better player with more tricks in his bag and very entertaining to watch and effective too but this nomination only looks at the 06/07 season. In that season Ronaldinho was in bad shape and his team won nothing at all but Kaka was hailing and won the champions’ league.

Things don’t look great for Ronaldinho for 07/08 either. Even though his team is doing well, he seems to be overshadowed by Messi who is in stellar form. No matter what the team wins the credits most likely will go to Messi. Messi is a joy to watch these days..

  77. 77 dawitm

ok dinich, now ur talking… messi might win it too. but don’t rule out ronaldinho just yet, cuz there is still time for vote to come in his favor.

  78. 78 Dinich

I know why u defending Ronaldinho, now. Rumor has it he will move to Chelsea next season. If so, I will be a chelsea fan too…..A Drogba and Ronaldinho union is just too perfect…

  79. 79 zgent

Dinu, are you selling out on Barca, and for Chelsea? Gugmangug meTa! Is this union better than Eto and Messi line? I think Drogba, though good is just a better P.Rossi and a bit overrated.

  80. 80 Dinich

    Zgent,

As it stands now, Barca is my team for sure. I even love the new barca. They are just trashing everybody in la liga and Champions league. But I still think putting Ronaldinho behind Drogba can be spectacular. The way I see it is Ronaldinho is a good feeder and Drogba is a good scorer.

Besides, I think Ronaldinho needs to leave Barca because he is being overshadowed by all the other superstars. It is hard to shine when you are surrounded by so many superstars like Messi, Eto, Henry and now Giovanii and Bojan. If he moves to Chelsea, Barca will still be Barca but he will have a better opportunity to shine. I really think he beats Maradona and Pele on a technical level but he needs the right opportunities to show it off. I want him to win the World Player title at least another two times before he retires. I don’t see that happening if he remains in Barca. Watch the next one, it most likely will be Messi.

  81. 81 dawitm

i don’t think dinho is going to be traded to chelsea, cuz barca will make sure they give him what he wants. if they don’t, it is their loss. barca thinks messi is good enough for them long-term, but dinho has the experience. i think if he has to move, he may be going to ac milan instead.

  82. 82 zgent

I think Dinhos move to a calculating Chelsea side is a disaster for him. I wonder if he would be this good if he was groomed in Germany. What he needs now is a team that appreciates spontaniety and flair and a coach who gives him leeway to exploit his potential. Messi is indeed good, so was Ortega. remember him? The technical ability of footballers is augmented largely by the football academies they attend and the exposure of young talents to all televised games where their idols are experimenting and performing excellent tricks is a big enhancement. Therfore, I think it is not perhaps fair to compare todays players technical knowhow with the greats of the past. Personally, I think Maradona was the most gifted of all the palyers I know.

  83. 83 Abel

hi people all are good posts but i must say dont underestimate the african teams specialy and i mean specially the ethiopian national team just becouse they havent won anything dosent mean there bad people ethiopia has great oh hold on i mean……. BRILLIANT PLAYERS our problem is our coaching training and personal body building tecniques im 16 i started training with the houston ethio team and a number 1 fan of st.jorge….. kidus georgis budin meanin hatter of buna team lmao

  84. 84 Dinich

African Cup of Nations taking palce as we speak, I had a chance to review the squads of some of the teams and I was totally blown away. Temas like Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana are filled with professional palyers…..Ivory Coast has Drogba and Kalou from Chelsea, Yaya Touore from Barca and his brother from Arsenal and a lot of other professional players who play in big leagues in Europe.

I think an African team winning the world cup is imminent…..It would be intersting to see Obama becoming the president of the United States and Ivory Coast winning the next world cup. Would that change how the world sees Africans?

  85. 85 Anon

This is getting to be really annoying as Nelawi would say…
Plugging Obama into everything and anything.
But Dinish, the short answer is NO! I could be wrong, but again and again I feel we are more concerned with how others view africans rather than how africans view themselve.

  86. 86 Dinich

Where did I say I am not concerned about how Africans see Africans?

  87. 87 Anon

    Dinich
I never said what you said I said….
Where did I say I am not concerned about how Africans see Africans?
My response was to this line and if I may pharaphrase: I would like to only care about how Africans seem themselve. It may be more empowering to say f you dont care what you think about me, f you I wont do what you tell me. You wont define me. Just a thought….
Would that change how the world sees Africans?
88. 88 Dinich

    Anon,

You have a good point but sometimes that can be too idealistic….we live in the same world and how others see us matters….but again I agree how u see urself is more important…..
