Ron into Ron Paul! 44 Comments

Funny thing happened to me on Tuesday evening at the neighborhood grocery store and it made my day!
I ran into Ron Paul – he was in front of me and I asked him, if he was going to go independent!

Neaaaah! its too late for that!” shaking his heading with despise.

And then I asked him if he prefers Obama or McCain. He said neither.

I asked him if I could take a picture with him for my blog. He said “can you do it yourself?,” seeing that no one was around except the cashiers, who had no idea who he is.

I took the photo, he shook my hand and left to pay the bill from the cashier.

I said “keep on fighting!,” while simultaneously raising my fist. There was no security, no personal assistant- he does his own groceries.

I was very surprised. I was not starstruck or anything but I felt as though the world is small. I am not a big Ron Paul fan idealistically, but I admire his individuality and the craziness of ideas.

No taxes, no federalism!

didn’t know he lives in DC or VA

I am a bit confused here, Nolawi.I mean if you are not a big fan his, why did u have to say “Keep on fighting”? Or is it a knee-jerk reaction seeing one of the presidential contenders in ur neighborhood despite ur claim that “I was not starstruck or anything”? What exactly do you want him to fight for anyways?

  3. 3 Nolawi

    oh sharrup Walid!

Justme- he is a congressman – he has a place ofcource in dc area- also he is required to have an address in texas- in his district-

  4. 4 Walid

Ok,I shut up.But one little comment. In the picture, you look more presidential than he does!Hope that would be enough to inspire u to consider running for the 2012 elections.Ask S.Palin if u thought I was kidding. And if incase anyone dare to question ur foreign policy experience, tell them u gained enough experience runing a blog! After all u have some non-ethiopian bloggers, right?…Or you might want to accuse them of racism!

Say whatever you want, but Ron Paul is one principled guy! I admire that about him.

He might be a little out there but be makes sense

    Dear Friends:

The financial meltdown the economists of the Austrian School predicted has arrived.

We are in this crisis because of an excess of artificially created credit at the hands of the Federal Reserve System. The solution being proposed? More artificial credit by the Federal Reserve. No liquidation of bad debt and malinvestment is to be allowed. By doing more of the same, we will only continue and intensify the distortions in our economy – all the capital misallocation, all the malinvestment – and prevent the market’s attempt to re-establish rational pricing of houses and other assets.

Last night the president addressed the nation about the financial crisis. There is no point in going through his remarks line by line, since I’d only be repeating what I’ve been saying over and over – not just for the past several days, but for years and even decades.

Still, at least a few observations are necessary.

The president assures us that his administration “is working with Congress to address the root cause behind much of the instability in our markets.” Care to take a guess at whether the Federal Reserve and its money creation spree were even mentioned?

We are told that “low interest rates” led to excessive borrowing, but we are not told how these low interest rates came about. They were a deliberate policy of the Federal Reserve. As always, artificially low interest rates distort the market. Entrepreneurs engage in malinvestments – investments that do not make sense in light of current resource availability, that occur in more temporally remote stages of the capital structure than the pattern of consumer demand can support, and that would not have been made at all if the interest rate had been permitted to tell the truth instead of being toyed with by the Fed.

Not a word about any of that, of course, because Americans might then discover how the great wise men in Washington caused this great debacle. Better to keep scapegoating the mortgage industry or “wildcat capitalism” (as if we actually have a pure free market!).

Speaking about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the president said: “Because these companies were chartered by Congress, many believed they were guaranteed by the federal government. This allowed them to borrow enormous sums of money, fuel the market for questionable investments, and put our financial system at risk.”

Doesn’t that prove the foolishness of chartering Fannie and Freddie in the first place? Doesn’t that suggest that maybe, just maybe, government may have contributed to this mess? And of course, by bailing out Fannie and Freddie, hasn’t the federal government shown that the “many” who “believed they were guaranteed by the federal government” were in fact correct?

Then come the scare tactics. If we don’t give dictatorial powers to the Treasury Secretary “the stock market would drop even more, which would reduce the value of your retirement account. The value of your home could plummet.” Left unsaid, naturally, is that with the bailout and all the money and credit that must be produced out of thin air to fund it, the value of your retirement account will drop anyway, because the value of the dollar will suffer a precipitous decline. As for home prices, they are obviously much too high, and supply and demand cannot equilibrate if government insists on propping them up.

It’s the same destructive strategy that government tried during the Great Depression: prop up prices at all costs. The Depression went on for over a decade. On the other hand, when liquidation was allowed to occur in the equally devastating downturn of 1921, the economy recovered within less than a year.

The president also tells us that Senators McCain and Obama will join him at the White House today in order to figure out how to get the bipartisan bailout passed. The two senators would do their country much more good if they stayed on the campaign trail debating who the bigger celebrity is, or whatever it is that occupies their attention these days.

F.A. Hayek won the Nobel Prize for showing how central banks’ manipulation of interest rates creates the boom-bust cycle with which we are sadly familiar. In 1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, he described the foolish policies being pursued in his day – and which are being proposed, just as destructively, in our own:

Instead of furthering the inevitable liquidation of the maladjustments brought about by the boom during the last three years, all conceivable means have been used to prevent that readjustment from taking place; and one of these means, which has been repeatedly tried though without success, from the earliest to the most recent stages of depression, has been this deliberate policy of credit expansion.

To combat the depression by a forced credit expansion is to attempt to cure the evil by the very means which brought it about; because we are suffering from a misdirection of production, we want to create further misdirection – a procedure that can only lead to a much more severe crisis as soon as the credit expansion comes to an end… It is probably to this experiment, together with the attempts to prevent liquidation once the crisis had come, that we owe the exceptional severity and duration of the depression.

The only thing we learn from history, I am afraid, is that we do not learn from history.

The very people who have spent the past several years assuring us that the economy is fundamentally sound, and who themselves foolishly cheered the extension of all these novel kinds of mortgages, are the ones who now claim to be the experts who will restore prosperity! Just how spectacularly wrong, how utterly without a clue, does someone have to be before his expert status is called into question?

Oh, and did you notice that the bailout is now being called a “rescue plan”? I guess “bailout” wasn’t sitting too well with the American people.

The very people who with somber faces tell us of their deep concern for the spread of democracy around the world are the ones most insistent on forcing a bill through Congress that the American people overwhelmingly oppose. The very fact that some of you seem to think you’re supposed to have a voice in all this actually seems to annoy them.

I continue to urge you to contact your representatives and give them a piece of your mind. I myself am doing everything I can to promote the correct point of view on the crisis. Be sure also to educate yourselves on these subjects – the Campaign for Liberty blog is an excellent place to start. Read the posts, ask questions in the comment section, and learn.

H.G. Wells once said that civilization was in a race between education and catastrophe. Let us learn the truth and spread it as far and wide as our circumstances allow. For the truth is the greatest weapon we have.

    In liberty,

    Ron Paul

    Dear, Nolawi.

I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you and rub you in the wrong way. I think i am fine calling myself “LostHere”, i don’t want to copy everyone else by using my real name. (Wink) You get my drift.

Now why the need to call me “Fara”? In fact, come to think of it, i should switch my name to “Fara”. Anyhow, my friend, you write and we comment, so toughen up and build a thick skin.

every now and then we might feel like some posts of yours stink. That doesn’t mean you should lecture us on whose name to post our comments under, nor can you call us “fara”.

I am a big man, you don’t hurt my feelings. Nw go ahead and write some thing worthy of your time and evry one else’s. Don’t abuse your readers. Best advice i could give, my firiend

@Dinich – I understand what you mean. I like etiquette at times. I don’t want to be distracted by misspells etc. . .
But i thought i was being a good sport in trying to correct him. Doing it publicly was so dumb of me.
Sometimes doing the right thing isn’t doing the right thing.

Ethiopians in ethio. split between the two candidates. What? Why?. My friend just told me that it was on CNN. Have u guys seen this?

  15. 15 Nolawi

The shook shake correction is fine

btw I am the least sensitive person – especially on the anonymous comments on a blog

on the content of the post – i think its very relevant and substantive

anyways in politics there is something called post- something spin.

For example there is a debate tonight ena- right after it the analysis will be done by tv anchors and guests and if the campaign sends stuff spinning it to their angle then the debate is won not by the person who won but by the person who won the post debate spin of the debate…

IE in blogs- the level of the substance of a post is judged not only by the actual post but also by the type of comments it generates.

Thus, if someone replies by with something completely BS like you did I have learned to stomp on it like I did

In most other blogs – non-abesha type the people the readers the long time readers are always their to defend their author – in the past it use to upset me because I thought the readers here in bernos had a lower level of loyalty not only to me but to bernos and bernos contributors

but then I have learned that most Abesha people in the west are just too idealist for some reason- maybe its the a freedom of speech complex – since they came from a country that typically has not given them that speech.

anyways – feel free to say whatever you want- i in turn will reply however I see fit.

I did not run into presidential candidate, but i did run into Bob Ehrlich he was Maryland’s governor. I was walking on the street in Baltimore and some man was standing on the sidewalk. At frist I passed him but i came back looked at his face again. He had sunglass on so I was like oh my god are you Bob Ehrlich? He laughed and said yes. I didn’t know what else to say to him then he asked my name and shook my hand.

cant we all just get along?!?!

nolawi, on TUESDAY…and im just hearing about this now?!?!!! you know i think he’s a genius!!

disclaimer: nolawi is not naturalized citizen and therefore can never be president of the US.

  18. 18 selamT

“disclaimer: nolawi is not naturalized citizen and therefore can never be president of the US.”???????????

he has to be born in the US soil I guess. Or he has to be born from parents who are US citizens.
That is why Governor Arnold Swatszeneger can’t make it!

  19. 19 Walid

I get ur point,Meron. But I think you meant to say that since Nolawi is( not”is not”) a naturalized citizen(and not a citizen by birth) he cant constitutionally become a president.Right? For naturalization, unlike birth, bars u from runing for a president. If my correction seems a little over the board, sorry.

Nolawi, while I can appreciate ur right to respond in any way you see it, a little civility( or diplomacy, if you like) goes a long way in getting your point across and keeping the peace .I beleive it is better to stick to the substance of comments-and ignore the trashy part .Why dignify nasty comments by responding to them at all?

And remeber you are being held at a higher standard than the rest of us, for obvious reasons.Do I sound a little “idealist” here?

  20. 20 Esete

    I agree with walid a 100%

the GOP would’ve had a better chance if they had Ron Paul as a candidate, now that is real change. My dream presidential debate remains Ron Paul vs. Ralph Nader…how are these two not any where near the presidency and sarah palin is ??????????????????????????????????????????????????

Lost here, if u are wiling to be cynical you should be able to accept cynicism as well.

I would be excited to see Ron Paul. It’s not every day that you run into a political figure like Ron Paul. Let alone some one who was part of this historical presidential election.

  27. 27 Grand Ma

Glad you mentioned Ron Paul in your blog (even in a small way). He got so many good ideas, but hard to sell to the main stream.

  28. 28 LostHere

Screw Ron Paul. He is a nobody and we all know it. He is no celebrity or popular figure, especially up north, as opposed to where he is from.

Stop crying a river Nolawi. You sound awfully defensive for a person who claims to be insensitive. Trust me, there is no need to throw words like stomping this or that.

This is a blog and your comments are going to be anonymous, so fall back. I am not going to be GrandPa, or may be i should? That will fit your taste.
