If you have been to those mini-marts at a gas station or made a trip to ethnic store, you are more likely to see these brightly colored phone cards hanging behind the counter. The cards are usually sold in denominations of $2, $5, $10, and $20. Oftentimes, they are the only reliable way for immigrants to stay in touch with their families in Africa, Asia or Latin America.
However, consumers of these cards are being ripped off to the tune of millions of dollars. I sometimes use these cards to make calls to Ethiopia, from the U.S., and if I have to list all those little things that annoy me most in life, this is by far my #1 pet peeve.
The frustration starts from finding the right card that gives you the best bang for your buck; basically more minutes for every cent. But that’s not only it, can you believe the number of digits I have to dial for my call to go through? First the 11 digit 1-800 number of the calling card, then the 10 digit pin number, followed by the 15 digit phone number (including 011-country code-area code-phone no.).
That is a total of 36 digits dialed to make one phone call! It is so easy to dial a wrong digit when punching so many numbers and, since the quality of the connection is unreliable, more often than not the call won’t go through on the first try. In fact, I can count the calls than went through on the first try on one hand. So basically if, say, it usually takes 3 tries on average for a call to go through, one has to literally dial 108 digits (36-digits x 3-tries) to get connected to his/her friends and family.
But the frustration won’t stop there… even after the call made it through, chances are high that there will be a static noise on the line. It’s also a common practice for the phone card companies to shortchange customers on minutes without us noticing it. I mean unless you are looking at the clock, it’s really hard to tell the difference between 25 and 30 minutes.
There is also the possibility of being charged even when the connection with the other party is not properly established. Add to that the connection fee and minute rounding and, that completes the misery of the calling Ethiopia experience. A droning lifeless voice announcing, “You have one minute of talk time remaining”, before the connection is cut-off abruptly, no matter how important the conversation is, makes the experience even worse.
I hope this situation will improve one day, and there will come a time when we all will be able to make calls anywhere in the world for a fairly reasonable price.

I feel you. I’m a frequent caller to remote areas of the world, and through my experience I have learned to
1 – Look for a phonecard that has a local access number as it actually gives you more minutes than the 1-800/1-866 number
2 – Complain to the customer service line. They will put the minutes back on your phonecard
3 – Buy phonecards from Abesha establishments and ask them what the best card is to call back home
Before phone cards we got ripped off by AT&T, not at&t, mind you, making calls to Ethiopia. I mean it was expensive, so when phone cards came to the market, you can hear a collective ‘Halellujah’ from the east coast to the west coast.
I agree these phone card companies are con artists – you can see the same company producing different cards all the time.
Their tactic mainly goes – give you more minutes when the card is new, then keep reducing the minutes and make the connection almost impossible. Then they come up with a new card to start the cycle.
Another problem is the ETC monopoly. If we have competition in Ethiopia, prices can come down. Just look at the minutes some of the African countries get.
Emebet has figured out how to handle the problem. I may add, buy from a retailer where you can return unscratched cards if the card stops working.
Oh my god! You have posted the one topic that gives me heartburn when I even think about it…the damn prepaid phone cards! I have become so frustrated with them I sometimes make the call using my home/cell lines and just pay the higher rate for a good connection.
Forget the static how about the damn echo! If I wanted to hear my damn voice then I’ll leave myself a message. If you hang up to lose the echo then you’ve lost your money and back to square one, part two of the heartburn!

When I buy from an Abesha place and I don’t get the minutes promised they replace it with a new card so thank god to Abesha stores!
I am pulling my hair right now over the phone card issue. Spent $13 in the last days only to dial all these numbers and listen to the ring. I don’t get it why the minute count/deplet if the phone is not picked up at the other side. I will spend few more, and call it quite. Its seems one sector in dire need of regulation, but its not coming because the disadvantaged are mostly powerless immigrants. They are predators like the payday lender in the hood charging annualized interest of 300% to poor and powerless and mostly I think black citizens.

lol by far i find that the most annoying of the string of problems. not only that since you have to wait for the other party to hear what you just said and then wait for their reply, that eats into your minutes. Recently i used a new card which kept ringing and you know, with no voicemail and all in ETH, i kept thinking they’ll be answering any second now but it didn’t happen. so i hang up and use same card to call a cellphone and half of my $ was gone! customer service was no help either, they told me i should have ended the call after 10 seconds even if it was ringing, not 11 but 10! ..once i had customer service return my call after so long that not only i forgot about it but i had also thrown out the damn card and thanked them for the timely reply agghhh..
my only consolation is when those who’s been out here longer tell me they used to dial direct in the old days, that must have been freaking expensive!
Want to talk rip-off? I make an 18 minute call to Addis last month via Verizon and was chared $115.00 on my bill this month! yikes! What was I thinking?

Just irks me why poor uneducated people always complain about being exploited yet do nothing about the situation that got them in the predicament in the 1st place (socialized unconscious acceptance). Instead of complaining & still going to the corner store to buy more calling cards, I suggest you break this brutal cycle of economical oppression by boycotting these companies. That goes double for those w/ internet access i.e Bernos reader/contributer such as yourself – USE VoIP.

After trying many phone cards that give me headaches as many of you mentioned, I found one service that has been excellent, thus far (Knock on wood)
It was so convinient I was calling ppl back home I had not spoken to in years.
You may have heard of yet, it is called joinvip.com. It is getting more common these days. The rates are ok but more than that, the call is very clear with no static or echo. What I like best about it is the fact that you can can refill it on line or from your phone. You can even do this online while your on a call and you minute is running low. Best thing, there is no PIN to remember. You can setup your account so when you dial from home or cell phone your number get recognized automatically.
It is worth a try.
My mom used my cell phone to talk to my Brother and the bill came to 300 something. I was so mad at her but she said it was emergency and her phone card minutes got depleted when she called a wrong number which ended up in Dire Dawa instead of Addis. She said a girl picked up and all they said was hello then my mom was like who are are you where did I call to find out it was Dire Dawa. Then when she tried it again it said she didn’t have enough funds. Just one minute of wrong number conversation will deplete the whole minutes unless you are lucky to dial the correct number the first time.
She says GOAL is a good one though.
I don’t know if this has happened to any of you but it has happened to me a few times. When I call Ethiopia someone picks up and says ” Hello AAnd gizie yitebeku” ,.. Then he shouts “erre bakachihu silk tedeweloal” as if he is calling out to some one. Every time this has happened it has been the same voice and the same background music. It has even happened to me when I used the same card to call two different phone numbers consecutevely.

Ted ..did you actually researched into this FTC minamin and how these tiny phone companies practice minute allocation…lol Outstanding! Look man its almost enavitable that you’ll run into some cards that will chop your minutes here and there to worst case.. wouldn’t give you 1 damn minute. But you also purchase a card that give you a service worth your $s (may be a friend shares his or her expertise on that). I stick with these cards for a while until I find one thats better (more minutes with no connection fees).

I use AMS voice services to call home. I thank God for that discovery….you just add it to your cell and for .36 a min you can call anyone at anytime! You can also add a cap to how much you spend monthly so that you don’t go wild with the line
Autolykos: You seem to be out of touch with reality. That’s just a poor analogy. Those who make international calls to Asia, Africa and Latin American countries haven’t had any choice until recently but to fall prey to these phone card scams. Of course you could make calls using your land line if you are willing to pay those exorbitant prices, but that’s another thing.
It was not until recently that Vonage and Skype made it easy for people to make international calls from the comfort of their home without the hassle of going to a store to buy calling cards. MSOs and telcos have also started offering their customers the ability to make international calls for a flat-rate, but there are still countries that are not on their list.
Thing is, it’s the phone companies that are responsible for the telephone lines that carry these calls. My thinking is, the card companies just buy the minutes from the phone companies, set the card rates and sell them to retailers. I’m saying, we ought to be able to make calls from anywhere to anywhere in the world, with any device be it a landline or a cell phone, for a fairly reasonable price – then we can talk about CHOICE.

I’ve been buying CTA cards online for yrs. For the most part I do get the promised mins if i use the whole card at once (which i usually do) but when the call doesn’t go through and I loose my mins I actually call them and get my mins back. But the echo is just horrible. especially when the person you’re talking to have the voice as you do. lol….seriously! talking to my causin is a bit confusing….everytime!

Totit, I have been using AMS too since its inception some 5 years ago. I have nothing but praise for their service. True, lately the network in Addis have been in some kind of turmoil. I hate calling cards and all the games the companies play to rip you off. Try Jajah.com. It’s through your computer (but completely different from Skype). Sign up for an account, type in the number, and the computer “calls” your phone and the other person. Ethiopia is 26-28 cents a minute (depending if you are calling to or from a cell phone- it’s 26 landline to landline, 28 cell to cell I think, not totally certain) and totally reliable. Really cheap to call other countries too. The only bad thing is that you need to have a computer to use it, but I at least never have problems with it. Hope this helps someone else out- it makes me so mad to think how much of our money goes down the drain with the calling cards.
