African Coke Guide 28 Comments

If you drink coke you probably have seen the new promotion for the Beijing Olympics.

Coca Cola as always is an official summer Olympic sponsor continuing its profitable tradition and promoting its product around the world; with consumers in more than 200 countries.

My little brother has been saving the Amharic Coke cans – part of the collectible promo coke has been selling for its part in the Beijing.

An oxymoronic coincidence – Coke and China go together very well. Coke has the same branding color as Lou Dobbs calls it “communist china.” red around the world.

More than the different trademarked phrases coke uses for its products in hundreds of countries the commemorative bottles and cans for the Beijing Olympic will say “Delicious Happiness” in Chinese Characters – I think it might have been lost in the translation but here is the press release.

Don’t get me wrong, I love coke. I grew up with Coke; I drink Coke everyday so much so that it’s not only part of me but part of most Ethiopian like me that we did a play coke and the city I was born in. The now retired the bernos Addis Ababa classic t-shirt.

Cokes Happiness in Africa

36 billion – The number coke bottles African buy and drink each year. Yes 36 billion.

Are you fuken kidding me 36 billion?

Africa has a population of approximately 922 million give or take 10 million. Ok for the sake of argument 1 billion Africans roam the mother land. That would be 36 bottled of Coca Cola for each person in African. Yes everybody including the Botswanian Bushmen.

Yes remember the scene from Gods must be crazy.

Now the bushman has a journey  to the end of the earth to destroy an evil Coca-Cola bottle.

20 cents American – the approximate cost of bottle of coke in Africa.

Are you fuken kidding me 20 cents?

That is how much they charge for a coke in Africa.

On the other hand; Coca-Cola is largest private-sector employer in Africa. 1% of South African economy is tied up in coke.

So I still love Coke and globalism is not necessarily a bad thing?

Nolawi< ---- Feeling the pressure to write about anything and everything.

    Lol Save this Bull

Fyi This post is not about the amharic text – talking about the economical impact of Coke in africa- 36bn annually- now if that is not interesting to you – then its not

    Second – I appreciate your thoughts….

Oh Save the BUll save the bull.

Nolawi- Economist had a peace last month on the growth of Coke in africa.

    Read here

the company expects sales in Africa to grow by an annual 10-13% over the next few years, handily outstripping economic growth.

You got the 36 cans per person wrong….let me correct that…

If you live in addis it is an average of 360 and if u live in Shashemen or awasa sort of cities…you get about 200 a year….if you live in the remote areas…you probably have no clue what coke is and chances are you might have seen a coke can under the hood of that old lionchina that comes to your town once a month….and chances are the coke can has been used as a repalcement for one of the engine parts by some ingenious mechanic….

Kids use to tease me about Africans living in a treehouse when Tarzan was popular and about what the hungry Ethiopians said to Michael Jackson… and several times I was asked ‘is it true, in many places in Africa water is not avalaible but you find coke cola everywhere’
That idea I think may have come from the 1969 issue of National Geographic coverage about Ethiopia.

Coke suxs btw, I never drink it.

I guess this will lead to a sharp increase in dental problems in africa, at which point colgate/crest will swerve in to save the african smile. Soda is terrible for you teeth, and health, its ironic they sponsor sports since athletes shouldn’t really consume it.

Haha…tell me about it! The American Athletes get free McDonald’s 24/7 while they’re in Beijing. I cracked up when I heard that.

I do like the fact that the Amharic fidel is on the coke can though. I was proud to see that.

  17. 17 Jeff

its ironic they sponsor sports since athletes shouldn’t really consume it.

Thats the truth… what makes it even more ironic is that athletes DON’T consume it generally.

What happened to the days of Gatorade sponsoring things like this?
