Our label 76 Comments

bernos labels

We are still here and around. We have in the past couple of month been somewhat busy working on two designs of which one concept called Heart Africa will be available in the next two weeks.

We have also been approached by wholesalers who have shown interest in carrying the bernos brand in their online and physical stores. Although that is our goal and plan we are still putting the finishing touches on the packaging of the bernos t-shirts.
For instance while bernos tees come with hangtags we didn’t have permanent markers. The label is the final touch to your t-shirt, the final stamp of approval and the identification mark of the bernos brand. The labels as seen will be screen printed inthe top-inside location of the American Apparel tees. The tees will appear tag less as is popular these days. So, we have now finalized the design of our label and thus moving on, all bernos shirts will come with.

Over the past two month we also have been getting more businesses from a more diverse market. A lot of African, African Americans and some we have no idea. We just know the names on the shipping addresses have been more interesting.

We have also been getting several email inquiring reproduction of bernos tees that are currently out of stock. Although we are retiring some of our designs we are in celebration of ESFNA 2008 DC going to reproduce 3of the currently 7 out of stock bernos tees. Details will come as we proceed over the coming months.

Well this is the beginning of many things so stay tuned for more happening news about bernos… Cheers!

“Over the past two month we also have been getting more businesses from a more diverse market. A lot of African, African Americans and some we have no idea.”

The “some we have no idea” part can be a little offensive, especially if you plan to target a wide range of consumers.

ET Alien my favoret by far….

  15. 15 Totit

Kenya, I don’t think Meron said Ethiopia is not part of Africa….I think Bernos started targeting the Ethiopian market at first…and now is growing wider…How is she suppose to address the fact that people from all over Africa is buying the T? Do u have a preference? How would u like to be addresed as? We all are citizen of our Country first and then we are Africans….

  16. 16 Totit

And by the way Kenya, I dont know Meron….
Bernos, I like the Ethiopian-Alien T…and I hope it is in ur mind…

  17. 17 mena

Please reproduce Desta Keremela, it’s my favorite…….

  18. 18 Kenya

    Totti,
I’ve plenty friends from Ethiopia and they always referring the other part of Africa as “those Africans”. In my Ethiopian friends group, if i asked a person wheather he/she is from Ethiopia, they allways say “no, no she’s from “Africa”. When i remind them what they just said, they get embarrased and they would say bad habit. Don’t get me wrong, Ethiopians are good people but, their attitude is weird.
BTW, i didn’t ask you if you know Meron or not. Who’s she anyway?

  19. 19 Totit

    Kenya
Well Meron is the person that wrote the blog…and if I am not mistaken she is also one of the founders of Bernos….But why would u be offeneded to be described as African…arent we all? i always introduce myself as being from Ethiopia, Africa?…When it comes to the blog, despite the fact that it was not there, u read whatever u wanted to read…That is all….

  20. 20 helen

Great job guys!! I can’t wait to see the new designs. I dream in Amarigna is my favorite. You can do I dream in Oromiffa, Tigrina, Swahili, Ibo, Housa, Somali, N’debele, Xhosas etc….. You can have a whole line of such tee’s…. just an idea

I’ve plenty friends from Ethiopia and they always referring the other part of Africa as “those Africans”. In my Ethiopian friends group, if i asked a person wheather he/she is from Ethiopia, they allways say “no, no she’s from “Africa”.

    Kenya,
I dont think that phrase is meant to imply that Ethiopians are not from Africa. That would be ridiculous. I think it an unfortunate choice of phrasing but it just means the person is African but not Ethiopian. Maybe the person saying it doesn’t know what part of Africa he/she is from. Assuming you are Kenyan if somone asked me if you were Ethiopian I would say “no, he is Kenayan” since I “know” you are from Kenya. But if I didn’t know, I might say “no, but he is African” (assuming you are.)

  21. 21 masinkomelody

Voting for “I dream in Amarigna”

  22. 22 Nolawi

Kenya, what you are suggesting is ludicrous because you are imposing your preconcieved notions to claim that all Ethiopians are a certain way.

2nd, what was written doesn’t not exclude Ethiopians as non-africans… it includes it. Opposite of what you are claiming.

  23. 23 bgFelasfit

yay!! i might get the et alien t after all!!
    great comeback tactic bernos…

on what kenya is saying…i think we need to accept the fact that many ppl have weird ways of using ‘ethiopian’ and ‘african’. whether this article says it – would be based on a phrase with a couple of words…that’s NO basis for an argument..like they say…it’s be obtuse…’qal sinTeqa’

  24. 24 Hidaya

    Hi Anon

You like the ET alien design design eh?:) I wear mine with pride, I cna relate to the concept of it quite well:)…

    Hi Kenya…

Would you have read it differently if Meron said “other” Africans instead of Africans? But, I think that is implicit in the article some things are in language.

When Meron says Africans, I understand it as other Africans ie not Ethiopians which is a specific group who were initially the majority of Bernos market if I am not mistaken.

The context is that this is an update that Meron was informing us of, and how their “market” has further developed to include new groups who are African but not Ethiopians, and others, she didnt exclude Ethiopians from being Africans, that is how I understood it. it sounds to me a question of semantic rather than meaning…

“..more diverse market. A lot of African…”, really? Ayee, Ethiopians! You need to straighthen out your geography lesson. Where the hell are you?

  25. 25 E

Desta Keremela, please. :) That is my favorite of all.

    Roots is awesome too.

  26. 26 Anon

In my Ethiopian friends group, if i asked a person wheather he/she is from Ethiopia, they allways say “no, no she’s from “Africa”.

Highly unlikely they would say ‘Africa’ if they know the country of the person. If not, ‘Africa’ to differntiate from other places where people of African orgin hail. You may be talking about the ‘are you black enough’ thingy… if that is how you relate to your ethio friends. :)

  27. 27 E
“..more diverse market. A lot of African…”, really? Ayee, Ethiopians! You need to straighthen out your geography lesson. Where the hell are you?
Kenya,

Though you are generalizing I agree with you to some extent. You might have met some Ethiopians who may think that they are more “middle-eastern” than “African.” They are being ignorant. That is in a different context. And I think you misunderstood the writer’s intention in this blog. I don’t think her writing reflects that attitude. (I myself misunderstood one of her phrases in the beginning.) :)

I must mention to you, though, that I have met some Africans who don’t think we are “Africans” and they don’t know where they hell we belong. My South African friend in college was once arguing with me saying that I shouldn’t call myself “African” for reasons he understood very little. We just laughed about it and we let the moment pass.

So my friend the problem is not only with some Ethiopians but also with some non-Ethiopians who are Africans.

The bottom-line is that misconceptions exist everywhere. So take it easy. :P

  28. 28 Anon

I can relate to the concept of it quite well:)…

;) Because you have big eyes or you carry/ied a Resident Alien card (Green Card) like I used to. It speaks to the mystry I carry with me….

:) A bit of both, a bit of many things actually,a short list would be nationality, origins identity, belonging not in any particular order or maybe there is an order but I am not strict about it…

A new thing happened here…the first hybrid ie human embryo and cow embryo has been created at the Newcastle University lab, 99.something% is human and the rest is cow, they want stem cells from it and it seems one of those things that are done simply because they can be done and for no other reason, none that anyone one told us about in any case..it is gonna cause an unholy row this.

True, then again which culture isnt complex or even complicated…yeah one big family, in happiness and misery too like all families lol…African families, see I feel I have to say it now even though I am already thinking it and didnt think it needed to be said…:)…

E, I agree wholeheartedly with your comment, it is the other side of the story isnt it the questioning of how African some Africans are percieved to be? or even told to be? yes I agree…

  31. 31 Grand Ma

Nice designs! Except the models eye shadows. Please, Beronos models, go natural!! I would like to take a look at the discontinued/out of stock designs. Please, send me a link or if it’s not too much to ask berons bloggers, plase post your tee (even the beat up tees).

    Kenya,
You made me think Mr Rogers song and this’s for you.

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor
    Would you be my neighbor?…..

I’ve always wanted to have a neighbor just like you.
I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you…..

I’m not sure why you felt this way from the above article. You need to suspend your judgment and check out Bernos tees.

  32. 32 spacefog

I understand Kenya. I think Bernos should show soem integrity and take off that part ”Africans”. I don’t think its offending to other Africans. It just puts our African Identity in Question. Taking it off shouldn’t be debatable at all.

  33. 33 Kenya

Thank you Granny. Love to be your neighbor, too.

Okay folks, lets put aside African comment for a moment and what about this ” …some we have no idea. We just know the names on the shipping addresses have been more interesting.”? You’ve an idea on what? ethiopic names? Evidently, you’ve no idea. You’re showing it. Knowing most of Ethiopians state minds, i’m not surprised at all. Please, kiss my Socially concious behind. Adios!

  34. 34 Ray

Good going guys! Keep pushing it, and take it to where we know it has all the potential to go.

I’m not even going to respond to your preposterous assumption nor will we change or take off the part that says Africans on the article…

    Kenya
Unfortunately No matter what we say, you’ve already made up your mind and that is to stem hostility and rage. You took one innocent word “AFRICANS” and decided to blow it out of proportion unnecessarily, rather than capturing the entirety of the article.

A little COMMON SENSE goes a long way…unless that is an endangered thought process for you!

  36. 36 meron

well, i thought i sit back and see where this will go…

Kenya—for your info im one those people who is African first and Ethiopian second. this is not to belittle my Ethiopian heritage but rather because im identified as black (i.e. African origin) before im seen as an Ethiopian. those of you who defended my wording are right about my intent. i was merely trying to show bernos has grown beyond its intial Ethiopian market. with that said i do agree with some of the ignorance of my community in regards to their relation to the rest of Africa. however, you are displaying ignorance of the same level when putting me in the same category and making an assumption rather than asking for clarifications. you must realize not everyone will write like you or to your satisfaction and some times good intentions are lost in translation. But be assured that bernos and its founders are African! to suggest to the contrary…well as Dawit stated, is ludicrous. i do want to thank you though for keeping us on our toes. but please take everything with a grain of salt and dont critically analyze every word.

FYI—by the way the interesting name comment was regarding our Asian market…

    see assumptions…no good :(

  37. 37 Konjiye

    Meron,
Great response. Hope that clarified all the misunderstanding with Kenya and all others who share his concerns. For you Bernosians however, this should make you realize that you are growing even bigger than you are realizing and you are reaching a more diverse audience not only through your tees but through the blog as well. This should make you more conscious of what you write when you are writing representing Bernos. Just my 2 cents as a Bernos fan.

    Hidaya,
I hear ya sista. Most cultures are complicated. I was just exhibiting some of my frustrations with ours about how we make all things so much complicated than they actually are. But I also added that we are one big happy family to say that I got nothin’ but love for my family despite our short comings :-)

  38. 38 Kenya

    Dear cluless moron,
1st African and 2nd Ethopia? You keep fooling yourself girl. You may have identity crises in your nation and you’re using Africa as a desguise. Be happy first where you came from which in your case Ethopia and then embrace Africa. Don’t single out your community, you’re one of them. Keep talking about Africa because nobody’s going to buy your Ethopia T-shirts. Good thinking. I don’t how i got in this stupid web site in the first place, blame me. .. Meron doesnt deserve this, she really doesnt. She has taken the time and the effort to give you an explanation as to what she wrote and what she meant by it, infact many of us have taken the time to explain it to you what was meant. Each time you have refused to accept it was a question of context and not one of meaning.

I think you’ve already made up your mind as to what you want to think as Dawit said and well it is regrettable but it is your call but Meron does not deserve being called a moron, especially after she bothered to come in and explain it all to you. Be fair in your criticism Kenya and dont call people morons it is not nice.

I have a Kenyan friend who is very polite. If you are Kenyan, please use a different user name since you are disgracing your country.

  44. 44 Grand Ma

Wow, i came to see samples of discontinued/out of stock tees pics and Kenya is running the show. Kenya, i’m going to give you early dismissal in my part.I’m sorry, you felt this way, however, you need to move on, buddy. Your back and forth history, geography lesson comments won’t take us anywhere. Frankly, it’s nausiating. Somehow, your initial “African” issue turned to such an ugly personal attacks and you became so uncivil. I’m suspecting now that you’ve some kind “chickology” problem with Ethiopians. Hakuna Matata!

BTW, i heard Al Gore giving slides shows about Mt. Kilimangaro and it’s getting warm. Scarry, eh? You’re getting pretty heated at a time and i can see the Global warming effect in your head, too? I’m trying to distract you from your issue here. Hope, you’ll be back and contribute your idea without personal attacks.

  45. 45 dawitm

    wooowwww Kenya,

you are a hater. it seems obvious that you have issues with ethios. maybe you have been dumped by one before, or may be this is jealousy. whatever the reason, you don’t make sense at all. everyone including meron were nice to you. they responded to you with respect and calm. but you keep attacking and plainly showed how shallow and ignorant you are. ethios have nothing to prove to you. If you don’t like it get the f out and stop coming to this blog. Btw, if there is anyone who is clueless, it is you.

  46. 46 Hidaya

    Hi Konjiye

I agree we are a family at all times, families fight and bicker dont they, but essentially are bound to each other by love and one hopes laughter too even when we dont get what one of our family member is doing..lol…

I find a sense of humour helps and as long as we have affection for each other and our ways the easy ways and the complicated ones we will be fine…oops Konjiye now dont quote me that man who once said “Families, they eff you up for life “:) or something similar to that I think it might have been a man called Noel Coward, I think he might be right one way maybe but he forgot to mention that families give you love and enhance you too, cant argue with him about it because, well he is dead now:)…

  47. 47 meron

    Kenya,

now really…does what you wrote accomplish what really want to say? was your purpose to educate me or insult me? read what you wrote and tell me you dont sound chilish…

i am sincerely sorry if at all you were offended by anything i wrote. if there is something i fundamentally did wrong please lets discuss that. if there is something i am completely missing and am ignorant of please teach me so i may be better. however, calling me names will only draw a sword between us and continue the ignorance and bigotry that plagues our region. your ideas and message would have a better listening ear if they were expressed kindly. i chose to believe you are a better person and the sensitive matter of the subject just got the best of you.

I really don’t think Kenya is Kenyan either, she/he is ethiopian since they used the word Ayee… but anyways, relax dude. Regardless of how it came out, its intention was positive. But even so I think its none of your business to suggest how they run the business.

If you like the tees buy one otherwise just leave and ignore it.

  50. 50 tsedu

  51. 51 wudnesh

oof, the thing with prickly people is not only that they twist the meaning and spoil the enjoyment one might get from exchanging ideas etc. by submerging us with negative energy, but also that they divert the discussion at hand to satisfy their ego which has ever been denied attention. So, please don’t give the attention seeker what s/he needs.

Let’s face the muzika here Kenya did speak some truth, although s/he stated it in an insulting manner, part of the article can be construed as offensive and I conclude it was not edited prior to posting. To add kesel to the esat the article is titled “Our Label” how ironic.

Btw this is the most entertaining blog I’v read here in a while.

Just wondering if everyone defending the author gets a free tshirt? :)

  57. 57 Rick Bernos

    Hey Mer,

Wouldn’t it be better if the tally vote thing was done using an application/system that umm … tallied votes?

Frankly, you should reprint all the tshirts. This is the 25th Soccer Tournament in DC and I am sure you can share a booth with someone and make a killing. But even if that idea is scrapped(being its a bit expensive for the regular joes that visit the tourney and that it’ll be tough to recoup the costs unless you have a motor mouth at the booth that guarantees sales), im sure people out there would die to have some bernos tshirts since it has gained some attention from the Ethiopian … er … African … er … Asian … Adriatic … whoever the buyers are, its gained some ground.

And, yes … Bernos tshirts are mostly limited edition tshirts that only a select few should wear them. But why hinder those that are craving to eat awaze tibs while donning their Awaze tshirt from having a chance to do so? Or those that would love to day dream with their I dream in Amarigna tee shirt on? … or those that wanna let out thier ethiopian alien-ity in bright Yellow hues?

Everyone has a reason to be wearing thier Bernos Tees and those that havent gotten a chance should get to do so and in the process you will teach the asian market something about desta keremela so maybe they will start making some desta keremela so we would get Fortune Desta Keremelas after some chinese.

I can ramble on and on but … keep up the good work. Don’t let go of the reigns.

You see felasfa, the problem is how people respond to things. When people respond to things its not an allegation, its already concrete, if kenya felt a certain way she/he should have asked for clarification instead of labeling it.
