Yesterday, they released the official portrait of the new commander in chief.
The official portrait is the photo that is displayed everywhere. The state department, nearly every military base, every American embassy in the world, the CIA and under it, it will say ‘Commander in Chief‘. The portrait will be at the top, and there will be other portraits of cabinet members, in some cases.
At this moment in DC, every one is talking about the coming inauguration. Since the city is expecting a million people, work will be closed , roads will be closed, security will be tight, hotels will be booked and my couch is worth a lot of money, at least for one night.
I am not a fan of being fans of something very cool, because its cool. I love Obama, but not nearly as much as I used to love him when he was an underdog. To me he was always an underdog till he won the election.
Now he is the president, so I don’t really care much if he meets the idealist notions we (society) set for him.
Dude, I am so ready for change!
But the big change; we are nearly at the top of the ladder to reach it. Because the big change is not what Obama will accomplish, nor the things is might change. It is, at least for me, in the minds of the young black males through out the world.
Dude, because our mind is capable.
Published by January 15th, 2009 in African and Current Issues.

is this the same sentiment you hear from other black brothas? or is the ‘i am capable cos another black dude did the unthinkable’ a shift in the way u think bicha?
eich- u missed the whole point…
It is in the mind set of ourselves… gin i didn’t expect young black immigrant females such as yourself to understand..
No matter how Obama does, I think he is greatest achievment already happened..which is to ignite the minds and spirits of black people and the “have nots” all over the world. Who knew we will end up seeing in our life time the most powerful nation in the world being led by a black man who came from the bottom. I dont care what ethnicity black you are (even if you dont like his politics), that fact alone a minority born without a sliver spoon made it to the presidency should give you a sense of pride after all the shit we have been taking from all other races in the past..Im sure all these racist countries going to love being in the saame room with him and kissing his ass lol.
nol,
Is the big change “the portrait of the chief to black”?
BTW, mind is capable blog is amazing..very inspiring.. I just got a chance to read it
Nolawi, what do you mean by “young black immigrant females” and what is your point?? I’m sure I missed it too – I don’t understand how you can support someone just because he’s an underdog without looking at his policies, and issues he supports/stands for…then all of a sudden when he makes it to the top, your support decreases. Ufff leb dekam.
Huhhh Nolawi…but u expect young black immigrant males such as yourself to understand? what was the point of the above statement?…
And our mind has always been capable of achieving…U set the treshhold…Why do u make the division b/n male and female…As far as I am concerned, the struggle was carried on by females as equally as by males if not more…Eiiiichhh…I missed the point ayedel…Please make a slight effort and give me a plausible explanation…
what i am saying is that black females have more open doors than black males…
and i don’t expect u females to understand because you have never walked in my shoes…
I can tell you the information about periods but i can’t tell you how it feels… eshi nebsoche…
ummm… the stereotype applies to AA males, America sucks for them, not just any black male in general. Immigrant black males, especially Africans are very successful. Twice I have been told we have the highest income–I assume percap. Non-AA black males are somewhat more welcome here than the native, the comparison you make I think is apples to oranges Nol…
“what i am saying is that black females have more open doors than black males.and i don’t expect u females to understand because you have never walked in my shoes…”
Nols ,
What the heck …are you kidding me?….the same goes for you…you never walked on other ppl shoes too.
Nolawi, I agree with you to the large extent. No matter how you slice it or explain it, it is extremly tougher to be a AA male than AA woman in the United States. This is not to say it is roses and peaches for AA women.
yene konjo, ur point isn’t exactly clear eko! That’s if u had a point at all!
From the portrait..to hotels becoming expensive due to inauguration…to you becoming less interested….forget telling us about periods and tell us what your point is.
Would the point be the effect of Obama’s election? (hmm, I guessss! on young black males, on hotel prices,..)?
What about your ‘not as much as I used to’ care……and that ‘yes, please’ under his pic…what’s the point from those?
But we r proud of you, our immigrant African bro, for understanding our understanding level.
I feel you Nolawi! Enventhough I walked in the same shoes as yours I came to realize at one point that the core problem was actually within me! I use to think or perhaps thought that when something didn’t worked out the way I wanted it, was bc of me being black. These thing happened during the first few months I came to this coutry. Later on I faced the problem. I faced it with honesty and truth. I came to realize that the only way to make it here was to do whatever it takes to be someone. I agreed with myself that I should be a good student, be good at work, save as much money as possible, get togeher with everybody, jock with my co-workers and classmates
I bet ya man it works like magic. It even motivates me to work harder.
Nolwi’s point of an underdog reminds me of a paper I wrote for a cinema class based on the movie Django. I discussed the concept of an underdog as a myth. Supporting the man with great passion, from the things you have written on this blog during the election, and not caring as much if his goals or the goals we have for him are met is a great example of this myth of “the underdog”.
I am curious, Nol, if this is a symptom of a struggle within yourself. It seems to me that people who support underdogs and lose their interest once the underdogs are no longer underdogs only seek out underdogs in order to satisfy their cravings to be unique or to appear unique. So they tend not to support what the majority supports because they are afraid they will be just like everybody else. If that was not the case, they why don’t you support or like him now just as much as you use to no matter what the voters or the world say about him?
And about black women, let’s not compare who’s worest off. That is so years ago. Now let us focus on how we can be better.
MORE OPEN DOORS!?!?!??! What planet are you living on!! Barack Obama is president not Michelle Obama lol.You think the combo of sexism/racism is a piece of cake? and giving birth is prolly easy too right?(*sarcasim*).You shot down that sisters opionion purely based on her GENDER………..THE IRONY…….men….really crack me up sometimes..if they walked a mile in our shoes……theyd be crying.
Baby, good point! I hope your paper earned you an A…Nolawi, betaam annoying honkkkk…..to those that will be in the DC area, please make sure you go out- Sunday, January 18-From the Land of Lincoln to the Steps of the Lincoln Memorial…President-elect Barack Obama who hails from “The Land of Lincoln” – the nickname given to Ilinois – will kick off the 56th Presidential Inauguration on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday, January 18.
There he’ll welcome everyone to our nation’s capital in an event that’s free and open to the public. It starts at 2:30 but get there early!!
Monday, January 19th – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
That night, there will be a youth concert at the Verizon Center in downtown Washington, D.C. The concert will be free, but tickets are required. Not sure if they have tickets left, but check http://www.pic2009.org/content/home/
Tuesday, January 20th – Inauguration Day
For the first time ever, the length of the National Mall will be open to those wishing to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Festivities will commence at 10 a.m. on the west front of the U.S. Capitol and will include
After President Obama gives his Inaugural Address, he will escort outgoing President George W. Bush (heck yaaaaaaaaaaaa) to a departure ceremony before attending a luncheon in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall. The 56th Inaugural Parade will then make its way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House with groups traveling from all over the country to participate.
Later that day, the Presidential Inaugural Committee will host ten official Inaugural Balls.
I hope it’s not as cold as they say it will be!!
Niceely said Bez
… the point i was making is really not about that… if that is all u got..?
How many female rodney kings are there?
wudnesh
besak gedelshigne !! I like how you convey your disappointment of pointless “points” clearly.
wudenesh..
the point is – the biggest change is in our minds…
Ewnet,
Nol, I seeee. But right now, the biggest change appears to be your dwindling interest on our man Obama!
Bez,
He is as much white as he is black. Therefore despite the contorted definition of racial identity that white falks adopted for centuries (that is if you have a drop of black blood you are black), we must recognize and also refer him as a mixed race person. Such a recognition avoids bias and indirectly rejects such archic definition of racial identity.
Mudai
Hey Nolawi,
I visit your blog almost everyday and enjoy reading all the comments and discussions — keep the good work!
However, you’re not making sense at all with this thread — just my two-cents.
Cheerios!
to rodney king comment I can actually name a few and to top it off how many men are raped, sexually harassed on a daily basis, and left to raise kids on their own??Black women also have a higher aids rate to top it off. Furthermore whatever happens to black men affects black women.Exp. If black men go to jail black women are left alone to raise boys to be men nothing is isolated event. It’s always degrading to oneself when men deny the struggles of their own women. It’s PART OF THE PROBLEM, like tupac said when YOU CAME FROM A WOMEN.That’s all I have to say about this topic………Im so on another level of awareness……………peace
Well said Axum i couldn’t put it in better words…
I am not making comparisons because this is about BOTH black men and women, what haens to one lot affects the other …
Another reason I wont compare is that I live in the UK and not the US ,…but if I was into guess work I would say life is that much harder for black women here at least…
There are lots of Rodney Kings here literally, a CCTV camera captured it…yes a black woman being punched repeateadly in the face by white cop…he even went scot free at the trial…yes apparently she was resisting arrest while in fact she was convulsing and having an epilectic fit but they took that as either putting it on or that she was on drugs and the LAW said …”
“Well he made a mistake, he doesnt need his career to come to a halt blah blah probably thinking lets not destroy his career for a black woman from the wrong side of the tracks blah blah”…, not sure that even coming from the right side of the tracks would have made a difference…so beatings and miscarriages of justice are not unique to just black men
Again if I was into guess work… I would say here it is tougher for the women because their woes are not limited to police men punching them in the face…they get that in their on communities too, mysogny, abandoment of them and ther children, domestic violence and mysogyny and in some instances and mother and father to their children if they succeed it is under such diffucult backgrounds and despite all the obstacles…
“It’s always degrading to oneself when men deny the struggles of their own women.”
Quite….
Why sit here and got tit for tat about who has a harder life, an AA woman or an AA man? The fact is, most of us have the opportunities to create avenues for a better life. Obama was just another reminder of that.
OBAMA!!!
Obama day is finally here, congratulations America…
Zhouse, agree! with the first. But opportunities will go unused if not equiped I suppose culturally
Little do you know is that if you even look like you are black that is how other see you. They do not care what ethnicity of black you are. When Pres Obama was elected to become the next president of the USA people at my job(non black, AA) were very upset and probaly still is because to them all they say was a black man. it did not matter to them who is mother was or where his father came from.
That Black dude Is now officially the president of the United states of America …
IMHO, Obama is probably the first ‘color-blind’ president of the US.
ummm…lol…i really was curious if this was something u heard other guys saying as well…if it is i think it’s pretty profound
Bez how did you get so smart? You are a very wise person.
i was wondering if i could via you a couple dollars via paypal to link to my blog in your blogroll/link section? let me know – thanks!:)

Hi there, just wanted to mention, I enjoyed this article.
It was helpful. Keep on posting!
What is ketosis and how does it help you lose weight effectively?
Ketosis is a natural metabolic state in your body that changes from carbs as fuel to using fats
instead. Your body produces ketones during low carb intake which comes from fat and is used for fuel for energy.
To achieve ketosis, your body shifts its focus to burning fat as an energy source rather than carbs, thus becoming
more efficient. This mechanism, therefore, makes it an ideal means for achieving weight loss goals.
Also, on ketosis, your hunger levels might be greatly stabilized
and your cravings may be under control as blood sugar is responsibly managed.
This may avoid the overeating process and consequently precaution of
a caloric deficit which might be the appropriate measure to burn excessive body fat.
