Whoop It Up-DC! 74 Comments

ethiopian-party.jpg

I have been coming to DC to 'Party' Ethiopian style! Labor Day weekend, Thanksgiving weekend, Memorial Day weekend, beqa all the long weekends! People from all over the States gather and Party like its 1999!

Not to mention the New Years party, the American and the Ethiopian, two Christmas', two Easter’s blah blah. You get the Jist! Those of us in the Midwest would come at least twice a year. After moving here, I didn't to travel anymore; the party is in my town.  I learned a few things quickly!

Directives

Foremost, if you live in DC Metropolitan area, you are not required to show people around. Almost every other weekend, I get a phone call from this Zemed or that friend of a friend claiming that they are in town. Ok, good for you have a wonderful time! If I was to meet and hang out with all the people I know, I wouldn’t have time to piss let alone live.  I am in town do you want to have dinner or something! Hey buddy this is not Friken Idaho!

Certain things are set, going on since 1988. If it’s a three day weekend, there are parties for all three days. Thanksgiving has four. Christmas break has 13 ending the 2nd of January. I make good money but I could neither afford nor have the time to make it to all the parties.

Will you be there tonight? Popular inquiry from out-of-towners. Don’t count on it, only if it’s a full moon! Hey man, I know you are my cousin but can this wait till Labor Day!

Suitably to answer the question, I go out once on a three day weekend and once on a four day weekend! Sometimes I might not make any of the parties. If truth be told I do have the preference of not parting with out-of-towners. They think, just because they saw the same DCer last years Christmas party that the DCer parties THREE HUNDERED AND SIXTY SIX days. Adding one as mereQat! Yes, I go out to check out the girls, maybe I will see one out-of-town girl that I’ve never seen before!

If you are going to go out on a long weekend, start doing research at 4 pm. The DCers get text messages minamin the day before. Slight chance the party is wack, emergency text messages are sent. DO GO HERE! Instead GO HERE!

Don’t be set on one place! Only god can predict where the right party is at! So once you get in, it’s ok to get out and go to another spot!

Its 11 am and I hear the phone ring. While I’m wiping the Ayen Ar; she tells me ‘oh Tilante Ameleteh eko, betam arif neber!’ followed by where were you? I get the same question at least once a month. What the hell is Ameleteh Ameleteh Ameleteh?

Ere Yamiltish, for me the party is where I am at, even if that is my bed! For the rest, there is always next time.

That was a good one!!! I don’t know how people live in DC?But I still here people that you can find your circle…whatever…
I have no problem who are in their early twenties, but when you see a person who used to be 10 year older, 10 years ago still partying with his pants down…hmmmmm…I don’t have to say a lot because DCer now better than me.

Hahahahaha, have you thought about letting your voice mail do the talking? May I recommend an outgoing message…”Yep this is Nolawi, and do I sound like I want to be bothered? Huh, huh answer that question first before you leave a message, in fact why are you calling me? I’m still waiting for the answer to the first question. You snooze you lose, goodbye. Didn’t you hear me hang the hell up!” Sorry Nolawi, you know I like you but your sense of humor is getting better by the minute. I’m getting to the point where I’m crying when I laugh at your jokes.

I know it is sacrilegious as an abesha to say, but I have never been to DC and I have lived in the US since ’86. I just never made it out there. I have heard so much about it that I hope it can live up to the image I have of the city. I am moving to NYC for grad school soon I will go to DC for one of the long weekends. Nolawi, I will be in DC in a few months got time to show me around? Just kidding…..

  5. 5 tata

kiki nothing exciting in DC. It’s just like seeing addis after 100 years.

DC DC DC. hmmmmmmm, But first, let me get this off my chest. WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE “YASELEFKUT DINGAY & TASA” OH WELL…Politically speaking, DC has a home court advantage than any other cities in the world(So I heard…) and it is designed to intimidate the visiting heads of state with all the government branches and everything else stationed there. One of the many things I enjoy about DC is the archtecture of the buildings(they’re HOT). Well, the Ethiopians living in it is a different story. I found out that there is this COOL group of friends/circle that know the best spots in DC and usually hang out with a style. Then there is this other group, who spend most of their time humping from one habesha restaurant to the other after spending a whole day at “BERTCHA!” gathering. Anyway, something that’s still strange to me is the one night life I had at DUKEM. Let me tell you a story. I went to DC to visit one of the many girl friends I had back in the days(’bout a year ago). She was HOT and SEXY as hell, and beautiful sense of humor. She was always calm in a sense that no particular moment intimidate her in the slightest. Always neat, not a hair out of place, and very good looking in a professional way as well. So I thought, what-the-hay, I liked her so I will go to her. I checked-in to a hotel in Crystal city and waited for her at the hotel bar looking my best and as sharp and good looking as I could be(remind you, I am only HOT, when its 98 degrees outside). I remember hanging out at the hotel bar and seeing her walk towards me and all eyes were suddenly on to her. Anyhow, after dinner and a walk in the city we decided to check out a Brazilian Samba live band(I speak Brazileiro, just so you know. its portugues). Danced to the samba and then it was time to go check out “DUKEM”. The moment we walked in, I knew there was something wrong. There were a group of good looking ladies (about 4 of them) sitting at a table on the corner, and another group of about 4 guys sitting at a table next to the girls. Both group looked like they were plotting a sneak attack on one another. Then there is another group of guys sitting at the“BALEGE WONBER” and occationally staring at another group of girls(who were very loud by the way) that were at a table by the front window. These girls looked like they were having the best time of their life, and the guys at the bar looked like “HUNTERS” about to jump on the girls if they made any sudden movement. Then there are a few more groups of two and three sitting, and a few of them standing. As soon as we walked in, everyone, turned their eyes towards the girl I was with and gave her a quick glance. The guys looked at me with a “QuaQ-InTiF” kinda look. The coky and GIRMA-MOGES-YeTeKeNaNeBe TYPE OF GUY THAT I AM, I walked in with my head up KURAT be KURAT, and KOSTER-TER-TER-TER BEMALET But anyway, me and my girl had a great time, we danced like there was no tomorrow. Then at the end, comes this drunk-ass, 30 something guy and started mumbling about something to my girl. She was like, excuse me? What the hell did you just say to me? she went off, I had no idea what the dude said but she just slapped the daylight out of him. I am standing there looking stupid and asking her what just happened, and then she tells me that he thought I was Nigerian or something and that she should be ashamed for selling her “blip” to a “BARIYA”, I’m like, huh? Me? Nigerian? Nooooooooo… I knew that was his pick-up line, but felt sorry for him anyway. I am like! dude there are tens of girls inside and you couldn’t mess with any one of them and you had to mess with my girl(this is me thinking to myself…). He pissed the heck outta me. I wanted to put my foot up his ass. Then he wanted a fight, I felt sorry for him because he was drunk and I was strong. I could crash him. I had never seen a guy disrespect a woman by throwing at her nasty words as this guy did to my girl. I felt shame for him. My girl was like, forget him… lets just go. I on the other hand was burning with a desire to teach him a lesson he won’t forget. So I grabbed him by the neck and started chocking the life out of him. But out of respect for my girl, I only held him for a few seconds to show him who’s the boss and just let him go. Then another group just around the corner started another fight. The four girls that were sitting on the corner were cursing that very same guys sitting right next to them. The guys were throwing nasty words like you won’t believe. I was puzzled by it all. Do people stopped dating? and now the new fashion is “let’s just kill each other” I didn’t get it)… But everything aside, (this is a long story so I wont bore you any more than I just did)…I understand Nolawi’s frustration… I like celebratelife’s idea on the voice mail. But DC is great just too many habeshas.

  7. 7 tata

chelema LOL! I felt like I was there. It is an everyday thing where there is a habesha party. That is why I enjoy my time when I go to a whitie club. You will have your own fun with out being bothered. It does not matter how you dance as long as you move your hips side to side. I wonder when the competion is going to be over with the way you dress and the car you drive…bla…bla…bla

Tata, tata, tata, what do you mean there’s nothing exciting in DC. Come on, there’s so much to do, to see. My first trip to DC I did the full tour…at that time I had a chance to tour inside the Whitehouse, the monument, the museums (my goodness the museums), George town…. and the best part of it all is everywhere you go, ta dum, there is an Abesha. I love my Abesha’s. I don’t see a lot of Abesha’s on my day to day life here so I’m just way too damn excited to see them in DC. For the complete Abesha experience, ask the locals. I’ve never encountered any problem with asking a strange Abesha info on what, when, where, and how – maybe I’m just too chatty. Kiki there is a lot to in DC go and enjoy it all! If you’re single the who’s who of the Abesha male population resides there, you don’t see them everywhere but when you do you’ll recognize.

Chelema, I totally agree with the Dukem experience I almost had to take off my heels and call 911 because I was so disrespected. This guy kept asking me to dance and I honestly was not in the mood to dance I just wanted to chill with my glass of wine. He insisted and I finally said “enough I said no and it’s nothing against you.” He asks why are you married I said yes just to get him to shut up. Then this fool said “call him I’ll ask him if it’s ok.” I told him if I call him he’d drop everything and fly out and believe it we wouldn’t be having this conversation you would be on a gurney and I would be laughing. Then he got hella pissed off, that I was poking fun at him, and decided to grab my hand in an effort to make me get up. I stood up and my girlfriend begged me to sit down, I’ve been taught how to defend me self, but I was shaking when I told him “don’t let this feminine look fool you I have no problem taking off my shoes and kicking your ass” (of course I was just bluffing and I was praying he would walk away). Whew at least he was man enough to walk away and we got the hell out of there. That was it for me I will not dare go into Dukem again without a guy. But then according to you they don’t give a damn about a guy being there. What is a girl to do always have a body guard?

Partying til you drop is getting outdated (at least for me) nowadays unless you have nothing else better to do then nurture a hang over. There are so many nice jazz clubs and lounges to hang out. It’s ok to party as long as that’s not all you do with your time. So there is a lot to do in DC….

  9. 9 adey

I know some friends who would come to DC to ‘Party’ Ethiopian style all the way from Brookings. So far I have been lucky with my DC trips, I have yet to deal with Nolawi-kinda zemeds or friends or the suggested voicemail :) I guess I pick the low seasons since all my DC contacts make time to meet with me. The trips happen to be company sponsored so if all fails there is always the hotel tv .. I wouldn’t pay to come party in DC .. ducking as I write this.
I envy all the events that you have though. There is so much going on ..or so it seems from my geTer view. We have more & more abeshas in smaller towns these days ..we would go to bigger cities or neighboring States to party.

  10. 10 kilomamo

    Nolawi,
Before you moved to DC and when you were frequent visitor I bet you were at the other end of the phone calling locals wanting to be shown around. :)

I say this because like you I also moved to the area few years back but before that I was a frequent visitor that called and harassed friends and family to either take me or meet me at the happening place for the night just as you described your friends, family and acquaintance.

What is so interesting to me from my days as a visitor was that wherever I went year after year it seemed like the same crowd was out all the time. I have not been out to town in a long time so I do not know how it is now but I hear that is changing somewhat.

Since, I live away from where most of the action is not many visitors expect my presence to their late night forays which works out very well for me.

    Tata,

I actually disagree with you DC has a lot to offer. The first and most important offer is choice. DC offers a choice most other states don’t offer both none Ethio centric and Ethio centric choices such as the choices of “Restaurants, clubs, injera, etc… I know this may not sound big deal for someone who is used to it but for most that don’t live around here it is such a wonderful choice. Also DC has one of the best museums The Smithsonian, architectural landmarks and a lot more after all it is the capital of the USA :)

  11. 11 Shanti

Kiki: I have only been to DC twice in all the years (18) that I have lived in the States. As a matter fact if I calculate the total number of hours spent – 6 hours (work related trips.)

Celebrate: “For the complete Abesha experience, ask the locals. I’ve never encountered any problem with asking a strange Abesha info on what, when, where, and how – maybe I’m just too chatty” – During my last visit, I did manage to stop and get a traffic ticket for making the wrong turn (took specific directions from a nice Abesha guy working just a block away.) It was scary as 3 separate police cars greeted me before I was given my parting papers.

Maybe it was just my luck that evening… anyway, I’m still determined to pay that city a social visit someday and check it out for myself. I’ll be sure not to bother my local relatives – thanks for the heads-up, Nolawi ;)

thnks celeb.. i am a nice guy too… nice package aydel

    interesting story…. chelema…

Tata… Take it easy on the Khat…. it must be the merqana talking..

Adey what is Brookings? or where?

Kilomamo… when I used to visit, i never bothered zemedoch or friends who were not happy to see me…

Shanti, what the heck is wrong with you… DC is the vegas for Abesha’s! come visit us…

  13. 13 Cece

I recently moved to DC and I’m proud to say that it was the best decision of my life. DC has a lot to offer. More professional job opportunities, more diverse than where I used to live, a lot of cool things to do and visit. I really recommend it to anybody who’s thinking about moving out here. Habesha Partyies are not the only things in DC.

Celebratelife, your story kinda reminded me of my sister’s when we went to Dukem for new years eve and how she was disrespected by a “20 something Ethiopian Thug-with-an-Accent” My sister is cool, smart and kinda flirty at times. So I was okay in the beginning when the guys where pushing to dance with her. I remember, she danced Eskista with a couple of guys(She loves Eskista like you won’t believe). This guy was trying to grab her booty everytime(even though the song was a hard core “GojamiGNa) I didn’t want to step in until she’s had enough. Besides, she knows when to ask me for help. So I just went on about my business “Doing my own flirtation with one sexy chick who was soon to be my girlfriend”Then finally, I turn around, there she is trying to come to where I am and this guy was like “MuChiCh Ejuan-YiZo, AleQiM” she is strugling to escape and he would continually try to pull her towards him. I am like, eh eh! Went over to him and grabbed him by his wrist and twisted it until it “Craked”. My sister knows I hate to fight and I usually run away from a fight, but if any body messes with the people I love, they better know they will get a taste of me. So she pushes me and begs me to leave him alone. The guy went NUTS. He was using street slang with a heavy Ethiopian ACCENT(zis…zat…mozerfucker and bla bla bla…) The bouncers saw the incident and came and escorted him out. So I know how you feel about that place. Going back to the original stuff though. I would not mind living in DC at all. So much stuff to do and So many things to see. I personally am a sucker for a city life. Specially in the winter, I like to put on my scarf and my coat with a cup of coffee on my left hand and my bag on my right. So DC is beautiful even in Winter. But its just too many habeshas and some of them are like “Yeaaaak” but then we have the Nolawi type of group. By the way Nolawi, what do you say we hang out at Dukem sometime next year(I am not kidding…)

  15. 15 blenmark

DC…EEEEhhhe….i think DC is a good place to mingle for once in a whil when u miss ur abehanete…beside that what i get in dc i can get it in another state…for those who says good about the museumes and stuff…how many of the abeshas really goes to museum, sightseeing, art showes in a daily bases beside ppl like nolawi who is in to art….? believe me you can go to best museumes, art showes, diff. restauratn and other culure things in many other states….we just know dc and we do not want to try other cities a chance….NY, PA, MA, Sanfran…has a lot to offer…. so DC is ok with me….what is funny is when i lived in DC i never went to visit any of the monumental places but once i moved i realized i never knew dc beside the abesha places so i made sure to tour all the historical places and got a chance to visit the white house too….so i agree with tata…dc….beside the abesha congregation it is a city if u do not experience it….Merry x mas all.
    God Bless you all

  16. 16 Tobian

Nice one, Nolawi :) Especially the “Ere Yamiltish … “

    Inae gin yemawquew
is of everybody in DC asking when the rest of us ‘lost’ folk will be coming down for a visit ;-)

  17. 17 celebratelife

Shanti, I hope you weren’t going down a one-way. I remember one time I was talking with a friend, on my cell, while driving in DC and he said are you using an ear piece. I was confused as to why he abruptly asked and said no. He said well I’ll talk to you later. There is a hefty fine for not using your ear piece in DC so little things like that we’ll never know unless the locals tell us. I sure am not going to contact DMV for the cities rules hahaha.

Chelema, I’m glad you stood up to that seqaram. I always say if you can’t handle your liquor then don’t let it handle you. But don’t knock the Abesha accents actually I like it it’s kinda sexy. I wish I had one but everyone says I sound like a puerta rican or a new yorker and never lived in either places and I want an Abesha accent damit. DITTO on DC is beautiful in the winter, I just love walking in the parks with the beautiful trees bundled in everything I own. We don’t have no darn winter here It’s always like spring.

I say when we all go to DC we call Nolawi for a tour without any advance warning. The conversation I’m sure will go something like this.

Nolawi: who is this, what? tour? oh hell no!
Us: oh come on but you said it was ok.
Nolawi: when did I say that, huh, huh when? oh hell no!
Us: we demand it, ok we have the plans on what we want to see and we’re giving you exactly one hour to take care of your personal business. oh hell yes!
Nolawi: you guys are trippin and not on my time. the party is where I’m at.
    Us: cool, where you at?

See Nolawi, you’ve openend a door for everyone to go out there and bug you…let’s see so far we have kiki, tata, me, chelema, adey, cece. The price you pay for being a nice guy with all ze fixins. I actually appreciate you being honest because I know everyone who lives there feels that way but won’t express their feelings.

  18. 18 Oreo

Isn’t it funny when we complain and say there are too many abesha’s in DC?? Don’t we come from a place where almost 99% of the people are abesha? Unless the reason we’re out here is to run away from our people I don’t think seeing too many abesha should be a problem. Plus i think if u really wanna avoid the abesha crowd u can!!

  19. 19 Mamitu

Chelema, I think it is also more of a cultural clash than just an Abesha thing. In washington DC you find Ethiopians who have come from all walks of life including from the Ethiopian country side. And some of the behaviours that you think are unacceptable are common practice in some places in Ethiopia.

For example when a guy pulls a girls hand and she pulls away, he might take it as “Meshkormem” if he grew up in the country side where as a city boy might not think that way. And even a man who grew up in a city might have a different idea about what women should accept as normal. I remember once when I was in Ethiopia, waiting for a taxi in Arat Kilo, a young boy I have never seen in my life before came out of the blue and grabbed my breasts and not one person came to my defense. Mind you I was a teenager wearing a uniform and standing in broad day light. The boy got some laughs and some clapping from some of the crowd that was also waiting for a cab.

But then again there are also Ethiopian men who have been raised to respect women. I think that is what you have in the mix here in DC. And the difference becomes obvious when there are men Abeshas gathered together.

  20. 20 Mamitu

“when there are men Abeshas gathered together.” should read “when there are many Abeshas gathered together.

  21. 21 Rahwina

I love it! Hell, I totally Love it! One thing I really wanna know though is, does anyone visit the landmarks of the area…y’know tourist sites and the non-habesha highlights of the city when they come out for the Habesha parties?

  22. 22 tata

mamituyee menee largeshe! that is exactly right. The habesha’s in DC/States came from variety part of Ethiopia, so you are right there is a cultural clash between each other. Let alone Ethiopians from different part of the country you can even see the difference between people who went to a private/ public school. But that’s every where in every culture. If you go to the West Africa in order to get a female you have to really smell like a guy…sorry stink…that’s what my colleague told me while I was in Ghana. They did not like my monogram cologne so I had to go naked the next night out (just kidding). But if you want to get a local female you don’t need any cologne/deodorant…any of that. even in the states, you rarely see white boy from Manhattan chillin’ out with Birmingham country boy. But they know their difference and live with their own circle.
But the Hbesha’s in DC don’t have any choice to choose. If you want to hear Amharic song and do eskesta you have to be able to deal with hammer tebesa(hammer -south west Ethiopian tribe)If you know what I mean. So I understand the way Ethiopian/men’s approach females always cracks me up, since from the days of ..telefa…to…kebeleachu shera chama alee…all the way too…yehenee video ayeteshewal…even though the person has no VCR.
Anyways, I don’t know why people don’t get it…helloooooo…going out to a club is just to socialized and have descent conversation or for networking not to disrespect our beautiful Ethiopian females or get one night stand…

    Peace, God Bless!!!

  23. 23 metad bet

when i used to live in dc and had friends come visit me from out of town, i used to take them to all the musuems, local restaurants, or neighborhoods. the abesha scene was left for the nightlife. and trust me, i didnt have a car then and i used to take my friends and family via metro, or we would just walk it out. DC is enjoyed better when you walk or take the metro. but yea, aint nutin like it.

  24. 24 adey

Nolawi – I am talking about as far as you can go west from DC i.e. Brookings, OR.
What about DCians who come to visit us & look down on us – those who think DC is Addis. It is indeed the Addis of US, but the difference is our geTer city even with the limited abesha hang outs has light, clean water, access to tech, museums, & most of the chain stores & restaurants (& local ones) that you DCians have over there.
Although we don’t have the competition to go out and buy the designer outfit and nice car, we can tell our pajama office wear from your Michael Kors outfit, our ‘91 Toyota from your Bimmer.
The comment about the accent reminded me of a friend from DC who came to visit us and another “geTere” who kept translating every English word that was uttered saying we forgot that you just came from DC. It was funny since the DCian spoke perfect English.

  25. 25 Temelkach

Adey, Are you familiar with the saying ” No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”…Gurl, If somone from DC comes and feels better-than-thou, it’s upto you to not acknowledge it and then the person will realize that he/she ain’t the shit!Don’t go in a comparison match here, every place has its great qualities and it is appreciated by some while not by others…to each its own!
Personally gin, I think DC is interesting. As mamitu said, everyone comes from different walks of life in Ethiopia, and you can’t judge the rest based on a few ppl. I don’t know about the rest of you but let’s just say I had a sheltered life in Addis and knew only the ppl I went to school with and the kids of family friends so DC and the different Habesha communities in other cities have been an experience where you get to meet a lot of ppl from different parts of Ethiopia which you wouldn’t have otherwise had you stayed in Addis or other parts of Ethiopia. I’ll bet you anything, if you had a chance to hung out with different circle of ppl in Ethiopia, you’d still come up with some peculiar incidents like this.

  26. 26 metad bet

i dont think this whole phenomenon of competing against each other is exclusive to the habesha community. it’s in every immigrant community. so for us to sit here and complain and whine about it, making it seem as if it’s only us…makes no sense. and the whole concept of abesha women compete against each other, as far as whose got the latest channel (aka chanel), goucci (gucci)..really, it isnt that deep. and i completely agree with what temelkach said…

the competition is amongst habesha dc residents enji, not amongst non-locals.

  27. 27 Shanti

Celebrate… menew anchi? One-way street? :) It was a two way street, I even stopped to let the oncoming traffic pass before making my turn. Apparently, the cop tried to tell me he was behind me honking to show me the sign that had the no turn sign. Think about it, if I am making a turn and you are behind me, I see you in my rear-view mirror but don’t see you hand waving or hear you pumping your horn… I’m thinking, you ’bout to turn as well… so what was “illegal” about my turn?

Anyway, I did my part by contributing to the growth of that city by paying the fine!

Now as for all those different driving rules in various cities, i.e. cell phone, etc. I really think there should be a poster at every airport that explains the ?dos” and “don?ts” of that city. I wonder what the poster would be like in Addis???

  28. 28 celebratelife

Blenmark, I disagree…in the area I live in there is a lot to do as a matter of fact it’s a tourist haven. The non Abesha activities are different from state to state. Museums…what other state can you find the Holocaust museum, the Air/space museum, the spy museum? Yes people like Nolawi may have more interest because of his line of work but the average person also finds it enjoyable as well. As matter of fact there is the mutter museum in Philadelphia I’ve been dying to visit so where else am I going to find that? This is all besides the many great Abesha experiences.

Sorry Shanti it’s because I’ve been down plenty of one way streets myself everytime I drive in a new city, haha.

  29. 29 Nolawi

thanks all… you crack me up… the request for hanging out… le Bernosowch ofcource… but ya i’m really busy.. i might consider the voicemail thing… speaking of I’ve been meaning to write something regarding the whole voicemail thing..

ha ha regarding NOlawi type of people… its nice to hear the perception of yourself from other people…. so I’m artsy fartsy… you should get to know toothpick…

Tuesday I received the greatest compliment ever… i mean ever…i was like whoa…

celebrate and museums…what they hey… museums are ok… but one visist to one museums is enough…

DC then check out all the restaurants clubs.. bakeries….. you think Enricho was thight back in the days.. try the Dama cakes… and the buna bewotet.. and the makiato…

go to the abesha music stores… you know kenenedy form back in the days…… look to buy some berchumas or jebena and SInis pick up a copy of Helm magazine… of Atref Newspaper…

check out a show by Tayitu Entertainment group…. Another ABesha movie screening….

check out the azmari’s at Abitis….

THAT IS WHY YOU SHOULD COME TO DC!

and then at night you can Barty!

    Party like its 1999!

This reminded me of some old movie series we used to have back home … remember space99 ” space 191919..99 thats what we used to call it . One of my girl friends mentioned it at the Ethiopian new years this year…. just a thought !

  31. 31 celebratelife

Come on Mr. Nolawi, “Tuesday I received the greatest compliment ever… i mean ever…i was like whoa…” Just leave us hangin why don’t you. What the hell is the compliment?

artsy fartsy…what are we gonna do with you and your humor these days?

We already know enough about Toothpick…he’s like the road runner…he shows up long enough to confuse the hell out of people and then he disappears just as quick as he showed up…beep beep. Man I got a headache just thinking about him.

Dama cakes, to die for. The parking sucks but worth all the trouble.

  32. 32 Nolawi

    saving the compliment… :) buddha endaybelagn…

  33. 33 adey

I was starting to think Seinfeld and Duke’m have the same ad agency with all those repeat customers ranting :) until Dama was mentioned. Temelkach – I can’t help it complexen yizeregagifutal. You know how hard it is to move to DC. I am looking for a sponsor .. there is this delala who is trying to find me ‘yebet serategni’net’.

  34. 34 Nolawi

    ha ha aha … Adey,… lol…

Life in DC is much easier than the midwest… Abesha people are moving on up like the Jefferson’s……. last week at was at an event… the honorory guest was the Great Telahune… anyways i was waiting for some one at the door at the end of the show… and guess you was by the door… so enj neseche selam alkugn… and said that it was an honor indeed that i was able to shake his hands….

    anyways Only in DC!

  35. 35 keleb

I have a suggestion for ppl who trek to dc looking for entertainment….short of looking for a jumping abesha party..

Go to love and platinum where a couple of guys called Danny and Taz(names must be daniel and tesfa)hold court on the weekends. It is not an abesha party so to speak but I saw lots of abesha ladies at these places. And the people were nice! Bring plenty loot though!!

  36. 36 Nolawi

Keleb sounds like a shameless Plug! ha ah ahahahahah

  37. 37 keleb

    Nolawi,
Would I dare? Just trying to be helpful for a change. Promise.

  38. 38 chrake

i heard it all about D.c this or that. we abeshas always complaining about each other. why don’t we accept abheshas behavior. we all came from different backgroud so expecting everyone to act the same is foolishness. somepeople never had a car or never went to a private shool so when they come here every thing is new and they start acting certain way. why dont we just give each other the freedom to be who we are instead of judging each other constantly.

  39. 39 Wudnesh

I am one of those who often come to DC….I used to hate it and only went because my special someone lives there. But now I get used to the city, I love it! Some here comment “too many abeshas”, but looking at it from another angle..shouldn’t it make you feel safer? As for me, I rarely hang out at abesha spots unless there’s a special something. I do miss Dama’s cakes though…reminds me of (Aurora cake bet-in Addis…clue to when I left Addis) With all the beautiful bars, clubs, lounge, to go to in DC…and with most abesha restaurants offering almost the same entertainment, I feel there’s a lot I haven’t seen yet to keep going to abesha restaurants. As for the abesha clubs..they are to be proud of.
One thing abeshas from other states usually notice is that…abeshas in DC are different (don’t want to answer ‘in what way?’ )….but they sure are different.

  40. 40 Raru

    wudnesh
i bet u meant Enrico..and not Aurora..lol! or is there Aurora cake bet?

  41. 41 keila

Just out of curiousity……..how exactly are Washigtonian Ethipians different Wudnesh

  42. 42 Wudnesh

    Keila

….u r pushing me right into the fire….right? :) Errr…ok, but I can feel it (even before I begin) all those from the area giving me the look.

Keep in mind, these points are what made them different from others FOR ME. Maybe other people think these things are everywhere…but I only saw them in DC.And of course, by no means includes all who live in the area. Having said that, I only WITNESSED these things in D.C and surroundings.

Only in DC…would you see a girl married for two years to an abesha guy, and keeping an african american boyfriend on the side
Only in DC would a man ask a woman “YemikoTa alle indie?” when what he meant is, ‘will your boyfriend/husband be around?’
Only in DC would a girl ask her best friend ‘do you mind if I date your Ex?’
Only in DC would a man flirt with his girlfriend’s roommate.
Only in DC would a man/woman have no savings yet drive a $60k car
Only in DC would a girl come over to give a man a big, tight hug, pretending not to see the wife standing next to him
Only in DC would a man rush to give a girl his number before her man returns from the rest room
Only in DC would a man hug another guy, with a big knowing smile of “if only you knew where your girl was last week end!”
Only in DC would a man ask his friend to call and ask for a ride…to get rid of a girl before his queen comes home.

Only in DC would we come, see all these things…..and yet keep coming :) ………..

  43. 43 Delalaw

Wudnesh, So what are you complaning about :) ?

i just visit DC for the first time lastweek. i have been to different places it’s very nice place to just hang out with friends. but rather than that there are too many habeshas who lives in DC. and i decide that i will come every year. i love DC

YE DC SEWOCH NEFSE NACHEWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. I am from chicago i was in DC for the new year eve and i had a great time.

  47. 47 Anonymous

Wow… the age old complaint of the DC Abeshas. I can relate to a lot of what everyone has said but let me remind everyone that there are some really great Abesha people in DC. I’m not really sure what the term DC Abesha implies since all it is, is an Abesha person residing in DC and has no bearing on the character of this person. But you shouldn’t judge people based on their actions in the club where intoxication has taken over their sensibilities! You should go out and explore the city and you may be surprised by some of the people who cross your path if you take the time to carry out a respectful conversation. So before you go generalizing… please explore all the possibilities and make informed decisions. If you go places and visit jails it wouldn’t be fair to classify all the residents as criminals so don’t come to DC and see the partying population and judging all of us based on that as alcoholics, party animals and citizens lacking substance. Trust that as much as Ethiopians in DC party, there is the same amount of them working hard, getting educated and doing big things. And for every idiot you encounter at the bar with no manners, there are several more who will treat you with respect and pique your interest with their conversation. Some like to get loose and de-stress from their week and that’s a choice but interact with people in the daylight and they may really surprise you :)

Why is DC so over crowded with Ethiopians and Eritreans?
Every where I go I see habeshas. ( Hizbe moltwal) I enjoy visiting but I would not live there. I don’t know it’s way too many ppl
( I lived in DC for 2 weeks and moved to NY)
Once you live in NY it’s hard to leave.

Together with the whole thing that seems to be developing inside this particular subject material, all your opinions happen to be very radical. However, I appologize, because I can not subscribe to your entire idea, all be it stimulating none the less.
