Ethiopian Shots 38 Comments

Alyssa Bistonath shots; amazing flicker find.

Once in a while I see photographs taken in Ethiopia and I am wowed. You could argue that its just the photograph that mesmerized you and not the subject. Its both.

I just wanted to share these with you guys.

Great shots and photoshop. The man’s piercing eyes and the gaze says a lot. The sky is just marvellous. Amazing shots of rural Eth. Each subject tell a story and it takes a talented Photographer to capture and reflect that. Thanks for sharing.

  2. 2 Nolawi

he/she didn’t photoshop these.. its just the shot taken straight from the camera…

flickr shows the details off the camera and settings used.

I saw the camera and settings. But how would you tell if it’s manipulated or not unless you saw the original pic.? Besides the photographer indicated that he/she used “Software: Adobe Photoshop CS3 Macintosh”

So they might have or haven’t manipulated the pic. unless proven. thanks

    Software: Adobe Photoshop CS3 Macintosh

The sofware will show up because the picture is downloaded to a computer and whatever the primary program you use on the computer will be the software on the description.
Edited photos generally do not leave a profile.

that is why i am saying this photos are not edited. i am 95% sure.. also since I am an expert in these field I want you to take my word when i say this photos have not be retouched by photoshop.

  5. 5 Tsedey

Thanks for the explanation. I would still be more satisfied if the person who took the pic. would explain. I question everything.. including experts. That’s my nature. Can’t help it.

Beautiful photos, thank you for sharing Nolawi, that is one good photographer, there is so much detail in each photo, my favourites are the two shots below. The older woman’s gaze makes me curious to know as to what she was thinking just then that made her look so wistful dont know why..Thanks again…

Wowzers brother Nolawi, These are amazing photos.

I too intially thought that these are photoshop works but I trust you. If you say these are not touched up photos I believe you.

Forget Tsedey, she is one of those that doesn’t trust anybody.

  8. 8 datdude

These are impressive, I saw the rest of her works and others on flickr, wow! She must have taken dozens of shots to get one good one.
Tsedey, i’m guessing ur from missourah, and descendant of thomas :)

Hidaya, curious george come to mind (sorry no literary giants today. ;)

  9. 9 Sara

Betaaaam arif pics. The eyes tell a story and it’s so well captured!!!!!

I actually am going to disagree with your expert opinion ;) . This (admittedly not as awesome as the ones you linked to) is sooc, and I use photoshop on my computer and it’s not there. However, on this photo, on which I did boost the contrast and brightness, my Photoshop details are there.

Having said all of that, I don’t think it makes a difference if she did/didn’t. The ability to use photoshop with a discerning hand is a talent, and even if she only cropped or turned up the brightness – the photos are still quite beautiful. Great find!

  11. 11 Hidaya

Hi Datdude caught me red handed:) yeah there is a bit of the curious george in me, thankfully with calvin and hobbs have left the building and it is all over between them and me,:)I am more like cg I think. I like animation especially children animation, actually let me admit to the full monty,… whisper whisper :) ..I like children stories in whatever form…enjoy your sunday evening….

  12. 12 Nolawi

    Well I really disagree…. with you c…

  13. 13 toothpick

you don’t need photoshop to achieve pictures like this. appropriate lighting and good camera work will usually give you dope photos.

sure, she may have used photoshop, but not any farther than one would have used the darkroom to develop film photos. adjusting contrasts/brightness/burns/blurs etc … that’s not unique to the digital world.

  14. 14 fegul

Like toothpick said, I wouldn’t be surprised if she used Photoshop to adjust levels, brightness, contrast, saturation, etc. Nothing wrong with that. Tsedey pointed out the Photoshop tag in the EXIF data so the file was at least saved in Photoshop at some point in the process (simply opening the file in PS won’t write that tag from the test I just did)

  15. 15 Nolawi

ofcource simply opening and saving it does put the software info in….

  16. 16 Tsedey

    adjusting contrasts/brightness/burns/blurs etc

fyi. that’s exactly what I meant to refer when I inserted ‘photoshop’ in my original comment

    NOT in this context:

this photos have not be retouched by photoshop.

I kinda feel like there’s a difference b/n the two albeit am no expert in this field.

  17. 17 fegul

ofcource simply opening and saving it does put the software info in….

This could all be resolved with a simple email to the photographer but if the pictures were not edited at all in Photoshop I wonder why she would open it and save it if she didnt make any changes.

To me at least some of the saturation and contrast doesn’t seem completely natural.

  18. 18 Nolawi

most likely she takes the photos at 300 dpi and would need to resize them and so she would open and save at a lower resolution for upload.

  19. 19 Debteraw

    Nolawi,

In my not so expert opinion, modern cameras all store metadata of each individual picture as they use the <a href=”http://www.exif.org/” target=”_blank” EXIF format. Most image manipulation tools are able to preserve this metadata on each file, be it you just opened the file and saved it via that software, or you used the software to digitally manipulate the image.

Not sure about PS, but I know at least The GIMP preserves metadata on EXIF formatted images.

Lemanigmawum…qum negeru it is possible to use PS and still keep the “original” picture information. On a side note, if you are into photography and stuff… I am pretty sure you’ve tried The GIMP… promote open source software whenever you can zemede….this is a topic I haven’t seen discussed in Habesha circles..I started a translation project for a popular Linux distro.. then had to stop b/c I assume no Ethiopian cares anyways…start a thread about Open Source and it’s potential to developing countries and an sure we can all discuss to try and start at a translation team.

    Hi hidaya,

I grew up on calvin and hobbes, probably why I like tuna sandwhich, and i’ve resisted the urge to join a woman haters club, having a crush on girls named suzy, etc…lol

Do you still like children’s animation in the 21st century? Part of me resists appreciating it, because I sense the strong arm of marketers behind most popular productions nowadays.Disney just isn’t magical no more :0 But when I do resist living on principle (like you in a former post) I still have a soft spot for the jungle book, and strangely relate to it more than most things. I guess calvin would relate to having a wild cat as a friend lol.

  23. 23 Hidaya

Lol Datdude, all good things, is it bad to eat tuna and claim to be a veggie? that would be …look what you’ve done now I am back being impressed by calvin’s flight of fancy,..crush on girls named suzy?oh well she is as mischievous as calvin only quieter with it I think I love calvinball but suzy doesnt, it is the other one who does I cant remember the name…

I like some children’s animationbut more than that I meant to say was I like children literature. I always read children’s stories ,I like Alexey Tolstoy’s The Adventures of Burratino, and Carl Sandburg’s Rootabaga Stories and Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn adventures, JR R Tolkien Lord of the Rings ,some of these books are not specifically for children but I really enjoy fantasy writing even in cartoons that is why calvin and hobbs so appealed to me…

About the long arm of marketeering yes it is everywhere, Disney animates characters just so they could milk their cash cows and create merchandises of this and that and prequels and sequels, but outside of their control there is some good animation though it is still marketeered some even came from here on a low budget and no Disney ,Wallace and Gromit of the late nineties for example.

Calvin and Hobbs creator Bill Patterson didnt give in to marketerreing though I read somewhere he really hated it and there is almost no merchandise of calvin and hobbs anywhere not related to the comic….

I guess calvin would relate to having a wild cat as a friend lol

lol, he’s not the only one datdude:)…

I’ve been surfing on-line more than three hours lately, but I never discovered
any interesting article like yours. It is beautiful

right content as you probably did, the net will likely
be a lot more useful than ever before.
