uvulaHey, check this out! That’s my uvula a/k/a ‘entil’. I had it removed just today, because it was “blocking my air passage.”

I wish my parents took care of it at ‘the right time’, in ‘the right place’, by ‘the right doc’.

Back home, a buck ninety nine and a shot of Arekaewould have gotten this baby flying into the heavens in no time.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t an option for me, so I had to go to the “place” where you seem to pay for service by the number of words that the guy in the white jacket (a/k/a doctor) spits out…

BTW, why do doctors wear white outfits??? Supposedly, they are dealing with people that have blood gushing out of their membranes, or are throwing up uncontrollably, or are crapping all over themselves! You would think black would be the proper attire…I don’t see diesel mechanics wearing white…something to ponder on…but, I am not here to talk about fashion…

…So, the “doctor” said to me, “well (pause), it looks like you have an enlarged uvula, and would be best to do a sleep apnea test on you, to see how server your uvula is affecting your breathing.”  Of course, I am giving you the abbreviated version. You know these doctors charge you by the number of words that come out of their mouth…the more words, the more dinero!

A few hundred dollars later, I went back to the doc’s office for a “follow up” (of course every appointment is a few more ka-ching!) Interestingly, the doc said

well (there is that famous pause again), I looked at the test result, and you seem to breath okay at night. We don’t see any major issue with your breathing, BUT (there is always a ‘but’) we highly recommend that you get your uvula removed to improve your…

I was like

…doc! doc! I got it! Please don’t charge me for any more words. I think it will be cheaper for me to just have you get rid of this thing…go ahead, make you bank account fat!

So, here I am, uvula free, hoping to fall into a deep, deep sleep shortly…I don’t recall the word that he used to describe the “sleep level”, but I will tell you this much, I got charged for it like two and a half times more than what a regular word would have cost me… but, I am suppose to fall to “that level” of rest from here on…We will see…

After all, ‘ye sefer hakim’ were not so dumb. We did not believe in them because they did not use some fancy jargon …they just said “ready…say ‘aaaaaaaah’…bel atalkis!” and sent you on your way with a nice “berta engidih”.

Perhaps if our ‘yeserfer hakim’ come up with some fancy words like uvulectomy…and septoplasty…and staphylectomy…and sleep apnea…perhaps then, we will truly believe in the benefit of their great work, and give them the credit they deserve!

Disclaimer:- [I was going ask the doc to give me the severed piece, but came to find out that the laser actually burns the darn thing into smithereens and there was nothing left for me to take a picture of…what you see does not (or did not) belong to me]

At least they won’t call you entilam any more.

  2. 2 mamo kilo

Absolutely! Thanks for the heads up – ENTILAM! ahahahaha

People get Uvula pierced these days… I thought the tongue piercings were a little extreme… but the entilachwune pierced…omg.. a piece of metal touching all the food they swallow…

People just have too much time on their hands…. but Mamo, you were talking about how much they charged you… but the charge was probably paid with insurance… so why concentrate on the price of your little surgery?.

Why worry how much your insurance company pays your doctors? I don?t know but if I was having anything on my body.. the last thing I?m going to worry about is the price?

    Cheap basteed!

“Ayee, yalemawek degu” ale seweyew siterik…

First of, you are falling victim to the ?ASSume? theory Rebecca?ye. I am sure you know what that is ? perhaps not. Insurance DOES NOT pay for such procedure. So you know, if the apnea test comes back within the acceptable range (basically meaning if your uvula does is not kill from asphyxiation), they consider the procedure to be cosmetic; hence payment is out of pocket. You also ASSumed that I have insurance.

Secondly, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, if you understood the message correctly, what I wrote has very little to do with what I went though, and more to do with the fact that our “local doctors” get so little respect for the excellent work they perform. Not only in this area, but also, all the herbal medications they provide. You know what a flaxseed oil is? Go to a local doctor back home with stomach pain, that’s what you get. Here in America, they sell it like as if it is “the miracle natural drug.” You missed the point BIG TIME, baby!

I don’t know what a “basteed” is, but it sounds awfully close to “bustard”. Not sure why you are being so aggressive for such a simple post, unless you are a doctor, but again reading your reply, it does not sound like it.

As for the minor (little) nature of the surgery, I also had an LAUP done on me. Check it out. In any case, I don’t think I complained about the actual surgery, so not sure what you were trying to prove! As you can see, I am back at work?

In any case my dear, I would have rather like to see you criticize my posting than me…I am just the messenger!

I don’t think you belong to this site. You might want to check out the other site “my home town dot com”. They have quite a bit of hate stuff…

But you threw me off with “egiziabeher yemarih” at the end. Honestly, thanks.

Any way you cut it, don’t take me too seriously.

Go ahead, send more of your “bustard” slogans…”I learnt long time ago, not to take things personally” (a quote from GM CEO)

    Thanks Quedada! Means a lot…

Doctors wear white closes and they paint the hospitals super white because some bacterias can?t resist white color and light.

I don?t think rebecca?s comment was annoying. I thought it was an excellent comment?eh?unless you are truly Mamo Kilo. lol

    i enjoy reading the article.

  7. 7 Nolawi

Mamo Rebeccas, comment was very light hearted and it seemed like she was poking fun at you as suppose to “critisizing you” per se…

    so trully take it easy….

and btw, if it was considered a cosmetic procedure, then you didnt need to have the procedure done for heath reason? RIGHT?

but then again these insurance companies find every loop hole in the world to get out of paying your bill..

one more thing, myself like rebecca ASSumed that u would have insurance..Hence the fact you are so well spoken.. you must be educated and senior level professional..

but ya forgive the sarcasm, mamo…. it’s just that with a name like mamo kilo, our culture doesnt allow us not to make fun of you…

    AT THE END
We the bernos folks would like to give you a big hug, and thank you for sharing you thoughts and experiences…
we need more people like …

bezu’ye… Does that mean I might have caught some type of bacteria during the surgery? Because the doc that cut me up was wearing a pair of dockers, and a flannel shirt ? no white jacket?and the ceiling was covered with fake blue sky!….now you got me all concerned? Guys, you are missing the point! This is a humor based writing. I am sure there is a reason why doctors wear white cloths (or is that ?closes?-just kidding don?t get mad now), and I am sure there is a reason why I had to have an sleep apnea test, and if it makes you feel better, the out of pocket money was not that much either! Since most of us on this blog are from the ?mother land? in some shape of form, I thought you would be proud to know that, as hard as we are on ourselves, some of the stuff we do is really AHEAD OF ITS TIMES! Next time, when I write, my article it would probably read as follows? WE?ARE?SMART?PEOPLE.? WE?DO?MIRACLES?WITH? NATURAL? MEDICINES.?WE?ARE? GOOD?THANK?YOU Thanks for enjoying the article though! I was not annoyed by Rebecca?s comment?I thought calling me a bastard was not called for? Of course I am mamo kilo, why else would I use such a name?I still have the blood from the meat running down my neck (only funny if you know the Mamo story) Peace out! Respectfully?Moe (short for MaaaaaaMo!)

“pay for service by the number of words that the guy in the white jacket (a/k/a doctor) spits out?”

    Haha!

About a month ago I walked into an emergency room thinking I had food poisoning.
It turned out I didn’t. Instead a day and a half later I walked out of the hospital with a ~30K bill (of course I didn’t find that out until a few days ago).

The most impressive thing about the 30K was that it finally legalized morphine (except now I’m baffled. Why do people break the law, get addicted, jump thorough hoops to pass through life … knocked out? That stuff was lethal)

The second impressive thing about it was of course the exorbitant 15k/day rate. Hmm. Was that for the doctors, the nurses, the equipment, the morphine, the unappetizing hospital food, the violation of every known aperture in my body, the pain induced through repetitive tests, the barium and raspberry drinks, or what?

…never too late to hit those bio books.

    Sorry Nolawi,

I did not see your comment when I posted the one above, otherwise I would have consolidated my response under one heading.

Honestly, I enjoyed Rebecca?s post all the way until she called me a ?bastard?. I thought that was a bit harsh (considering the message;) which by the way, someone else, also gave me the same name on a different post. Perhaps I need to tone it down a bit?I accept all criticisms except the personal insults?thanks

I am a foreigner; you think I will spend money on a cosmetic surgery? Ahahaha? If I had the money for a cosmetic surgery, I would have started with my face! Ahahahah

Your guess is correct. It is just a corporate loophole?we live in a capitalist society?profit and not human care is the ?bottom line?.

As far as me having insurance, yes, I do, but between the monthly payment, and deductible, and co-pay, and prescription, and smile pay and pay for the extra tissue paper you used, and pay for the small cup you urinated in, I think it would probably be cheaper if I self insure?ahahahah

As for the name mamo, I don?t know if you recall what I said when I first used it, but I said (rephrased) ?using a moniker like Mamo, I know I am asking for it?but bring it on, Momo was my Hero!??ahahah?dish it out, brother?Just don?t personally insult me (unless it is called for)

I normally reject psychologist, but this one named Nolawi might of a different breed?thanks for the complement! Not to engage further on the group hug, but I honestly think there are a lot of ?us? around the world? *we* sometimes prefer to keep quite or look the other way, because we don?t like to be called bastards for having an idea

*We* = 99.9% of my people

Mamo, I enjoyed your article but something’s bothering me about your comments. Are you the same ‘mamo kilo’ who used multiple nicknames and dominated the soc.culture.ethiopia.misc forum in 1999-2000? Your comments remind me of that guy (let’s call him mamo99). http://tinyurl.com/p732o

If you are mamo99, then I hope you do NOT repeat on bernos.org the insanity that caused the death of that forum. Mamo99′s posts accounted for 80% of the forum’s posts and it all got so twisted and nasty that everyone abandoned that forum. I never liked that forum (negative Ethiopian politics was never my thang) and I did find some of mamo99′s posts very amusing, but nevertheless shouting down all other commenters and dominating a forum to a point that it becomes all about mamo99 was very wrong.

I’m hoping you’re not mamo99. I like bernos.org, let’s keep things lighthearted and not get things twisted.

Thanks for the article, I really did enjoy it.

Not the same one, Brother. I did not even start checking out blogs until few months ago. See what I posted on ‘Bernos vs. America’ down below…what I said about me placing blindfolds over was for real. In 1999, all I had in mind was the ‘Benjamins’ and ‘Franklins’ (if you know what I mean)

    Light hearted as they come…

Plus, I am not just mamo…I am THE GREAT MAMO KILO!!!!

    ahahaha

    Peace out…

PS. If you see something that looks twisted in my current or future postings, please feel free to identify them. It is possible that my message could be construed or come out differently than what they are intended to accomplish, and would very much like to either learn, or be given the opportunity to explain myself from your criticism…(if possible)

What I prefer we don?t do is play ?leba ena police??When people do the ?I gotcha? thing repeatedly, then it is time to move on?because then, there is no learning nor will we be entertained?and then, the site might turn into ?my home town dot com?…(Not that I had such an experience with blogs, but I would imagine blogs resemble real life, and I have learnt a lot from real life)

Thanks, Yonas! I honestly appreciate how you presented your inquiry?take care

  13. 13 yonas

My bad, mamo kilo. Apologies for the previous comment if it caused any offense.

  14. 14 mamo kilo

Not at all…but I just checked out the link, and IT IS TWISTED…I will say this much, if I get twisted, it WILL NOT be about politics, as I know nothing about it..and don’t care to know about it either…
