Growing up I was always afraid of the dark and I remember one night I was so scared because my sweet ehet decided to tell me they’re coming after me, but she didn’t say who they were. I imagined the leboch or geboch coming to take me away from my happy home.
What is a girl to do but run, more like I tippy toed with power into my parents bedroom and woke up my emaye, crying actually sobbing. She was startled and said, “wey, afer leblalesh men honshibegn?” I told her they were coming to get me and my sis saw them.
My mom was clearly upset and told me to get into bed with her. Oh how wonderful it was to be snuggled up against emaye the whole night and the bad people couldn’t touch me. Ohhhh and my poor sis was all alone in the bedroom, that’s what she gets. I wanted to say, nanananana mom will kick your butt but I fell fast asleep, like an infant.
The next morning, my instigating sweet ehet, got in big trouble for scaring me the night before. Because she always loved putting the fear of God into people, she saw getting in trouble as an encouragement and she got in trouble all the time. Even our older brothers were scared of her. Whew what power she had in that household. Who dare mess with her! Our father always thought us to fight for what’s ours and never back down.
Being the only two girls in a house dominated by boys, that meant a lot. The only problem was my sister had enough bravery for the both of us. Only she can mess with me but God forbid one of our brothers tried to even touch the hair on my head, she came out huffing and puffing and waiting to hear ‘Toro’ to go charging at them.
That morning my mom explained to me, “mariam eYalech manem aynekashem, zare Tewat anegag’erat eshi eTbeQatalew belaGnalech” So I got my mom and Mariam on the payroll, how you like me now! That confidence didn’t last, my sis had another plan up her sleeve…that afternoon she asked me, “did the bad people get you last night?” Ha, if she only knew the people I got working for me. So I told her about my new found silent partner, Mariam, who is working hard to protect me. She said, “anche Qil, mariam motalech eko” and she goes on telling me how silly I was to believe it and that mom only said that because she’s sick and tired of me running to her all the time with tears.
If I went to my dad he would kill her so I went to mom to lesson the blow. The terror started all over again. Now who do I believe…..I love my sis for the good memories and I love my mother and father for teaching their two girls to fight for what’s theirs.

I grew up in house full of boys. I was they only girl among six children. My brothers were good to me for the most part. They were always protective of me. I can remember only a few times when I got in a big fight with one of them. But I never snitched on them. If I snitched on them I know I would get it later. Besides my father didn’t like it when we masabeked so I never did.
My oldest brother had a collection of comic books (Tintin mostly) and I loved sneaking into his room and looking at them until he caught me once and he hit me (he didn’t like anybody touching his things). I never did it again. They used to tell me wild stories I used to believe whole heartedly until I find out otherwise. And I used to annoy them by following them around when they were with friends.
I love my brothers what wonderful men they turned out to be. I am a proud sister.

Speaking of rumbles, my older sis (only by 13mo.) and used to fight like nobody’s business. I mean, biting, kicking, and the occasional metregia grabbing. Our Seratigñas wouldn’t even separate us; they would be rolling on the floor with laughter watching us attempt to murder each other. We had to fight on a daily bases or else……..I wouldn’t know cause it never happened. I remember once we managed to not fight the entire day, and we had a guest staying over so we had to share a bed. I claimed she touched me and I got up and kicked her ass. We’re no longer violent and haven’t been since 5th grade, in fact, she’s one of my BFFs now. We still argue, but wouldn’t trade the years of fighting for anything-it made us inseparable..

It’s funny you posted this article…just the other day my friend and I was memorizing our biggest fights with our siblings and boy did we have stories…to many to even mention here on the blog. Anyway as much as we all hated our siblings @ the time we sure do love the memories now.

me and my sis, am about two years older than her, gosh when we were back home i dont remember the day we didnt have a fight, so anyway since she was younger my parents always took her side, which pisssed me off. so when ever we are alone, i will leave her in alone in one room and tell her ”gebocho metew yebeloshal” loooool she cries her eyes out. and i be like ayzosh zyzosh, n not to do sum the stuff she does to make me go offf. so she be like eshiii huletegnaaa blah blahhh, then later when ou rparents come home…. she runs to them n be like ”metachin minem salageg” n go back to pissing me offf… funny thing i never hated her… gooood times:)

You got me thinking, my experience is more the flip side of the coin. …I *owned* my little bro when we were kids. I resented him at first (so they tell me and it’s normal) then he graduated to being the object of my entertainment. Making his life miserable any chance I got. Minor things like telling him to bite and chew on my laPis that smelled like vanilla and he’ll discover the creamy cake in the centre, grab a thorny leaf, spraying him with a garden hose just because, …y’know, stuff like that.
Then things changed. I somehow started being the big bro/protector. Nobody touches my brother but me kind of thing. There’s only the two of us and we’re 3 yrs apart. He once broke a window dribbling a soccer ball in the living room, …life as he knew it drained from his face and started crying. He was inconsolable even after I told him he was screwed but not really compared to what the parents go through with me. He wouldn’t stop crying! …I was his big brother, I took the rap for him. And got punished. My uncle remarked that he “expected” better and more sophisticated Tifatoch, and breaking windows playing soccer indoors was really beneath my talents.
