When was the last time you were served by a male waiter in an Ethiopian restaurant?
If you are like me, only once; and in that instance the waiter happened to the owner of the restaurant. Ethiopian restaurants servers, in general are only females. Of course, I am talking about the restaurants here in the United States. I have not been to every restaurant, but I have been to many in different cities.
Hooters is the brand name of a popular restaurant based in the US plus 13 other countries throughout the world. The marketing strategy is brilliantly masterminded to serving bad food with a beautiful young woman in scantly clad clothing. “Hooter girls ” are chosen based upon their breast size, as well as all round good looks.
If small-chested, they may be asked to pad their bras. They are instantly recognizable by their uniform of a white tank top with the Hooters owl logo and the location name on the front paired with the famously short orange runners' shorts. Originally, the T-shirts were white cotton, pulled tight, and knotted in the back to emphasize the breasts.
The qualifications to be a “hooters girl” are controversial, as it is objectification of woman at best. The number of past and pending sexual discrimination law suits is astounding. At the end, it is legal in almost all countries.

There are over 50 Ethiopian restaurants, most marketed directly to Ethiopians. Increasingly, I have noticed that some are exploring outside that of the traditional marketing strategy. Some like Zed’s Ethiopian Restaurant and others advertise only to non-Ethiopians. Some have nightly entertainment; some have big flat screen television screens with Ethiopian music videos.
The traditional marketing philosophy of “serve good food and they will come” has become antiquated. Good service has never really corresponded with Ethiopian restaurants, atleast not in the US.
The new philosophy seems to be “a kitfo served with a beautiful young Ethiopian tastes much better than just a kitfo.”
In addition, I think they might be right, as I prefer Madjet to Roha . Madjet servers are younger and more Konjo!

Well I think being a server at an Ethiopian restaurant is the hardest Job ever!! And most Ethiopian customers don?t deserve the good service (sorry for generalizing) they really think that the servers are like ?yebete seartegna? and I think these servers starts treating every customer the same way after experiencing that most are ignorant, demanding, and really balegewoch!!
Hooters agreed to pay $3.75 million to settle sex discrimination class action filed by jop applicants and employees who alleged that the restaurant chain unlawfully refused to hire men as waitres, bartenders, and hosts. Now eventhough men don’t waitres like the females, they still work there….so the technique of ET restaurants using big screen tv and entertainment to attract customers might suit them better.
By the way Gigi, I agree that it probably is the hardest thing working in ET restaurants- geen generalizing it is a bit too harsh. I understand about ?Yalteketu wendoch? and of course the $5 tip everyone leaves thinking that it?s enough?but they?re still better tippers than most of the inhabitants of the land(if that’s the case)….esti meen tasebalachu??

I’m convinced that there is a 0.5 degree separation between any given 2 Ethiopians in the US. Doesn’t this voyeuristic take on habesha women going about their business, making a living, make you wonder if perhaps this random woman you’re objectifying happens to be your brother-in-law’s … little sister? Because every freaking habesha I meet is some body’s somebody something by so and so. The next thing i know they’re my second cousin.

I agree with you Tobian. I think the degree of separation might actually be four?. Now on the subject at hand?this is a marketing strategy used by other food and beverage establishments all over the U.S. I live in NY and here if you’re hot then you got the job. I am guilty of just that. I hired my employees first and foremost on looks. If you were not and hired then you must have been one hell of a server or came with a reference I couldn?t refuse. I wasn?t trying to be mean or sexist. But in my management training, I was encouraged to hire good looking girls. This is for a couple of reasons. One when good looking people are serving you?you tend to have a positive outlook on the place you?re dining. Second, a pretty girl can get you (especially guys) to order things that you probably wouldn?t and get you to spend more money then you would normally. Third, whether the service is good or not of you?re being served by a hot chick or a great looking guy, you are more likely to return to the place. It?s been proven. Now, this is not a perfect formal but you?d be surprised what a good-looking girl with big breasts can get a guy to buy?
ET restaurants are smart to market their restaurant in this manner. Unfortunately we live in a society where ?beauty? sells. By the way here in NY there are several male servers at various restaurants?so I?ve heard. I?ve run into two.

well most of habesha men’s don’t have a respect for our fellow sister. if she is working as waiters she need a respect . this temeama habesh was a client of madjet onece . he came with group of friends to have lunch and this beautiful server was taking order and he wants her to choose for him what he can it. well she explaines what is good in the menue and took the order. after enjoying the meal he called her back and said (Asgeshigne) and she slap him on the face and he got what he deserve………
