Yesterday’s AA 30 Comments

Yes, we are developing our new site and I have been working on it on and off for about 3 months. It’s one of those things I have started working on a few times but somehow things fall apart as with any large web development project with a very small budget and time (mostly the bernos team’s). The new bernos™ site  is near a real e-commerce application on par with the large retailers and not just an open source content management system that is hastily installed.

Yesterday, as I was working on the product page and with all the things that we are going to leverage with the launch of the new site, including new bernos™ tees, bernos™ kids and as well as the many features of our application, I was thinking we should definitely educate people on the quality of the American Apparel tees.  I was thinking maybe some kind of logo badge….proudly printed on American Apparel t-shirts.

Everything about American Apparel has inspired me in many ways. The way they market their products unapologetically or their political stances on immigration like in the Legalize LA campaign (wiki), as well as their socially conscious position on manufacturing. They have the highest earning workers in the apparel industry, all the while the competition way is paying 50 cents an hour they were paying 24 times that at 12$ an hour.

All these and by the time bernos™ launched in 2006 they were the largest clothing manufacturer in the United States; and one of the only companies that exported a Made in USA apparel. As well as the largest wholesale for graphic tee designers large and small even though the wholesale cost of the t-shirt almost 4 times more than the average price of their competitors.

We get emails from customers that don’t know about American Apparel, asking as why we don’t use certain brands of tees or why we don’t do production in Ethiopia or somewhere in Africa. I casually shrug them off because I didn’t want to explain all the things I’ve mentioned above.

But yesterday, the company I invested in, yes I have some stock (not much) but nonetheless the shares fell and fell hard.   AA recently changed accounting firm and they got a federal subpoena, some kind of accounting scandal may or not may come and AA, like a lot of clothing manufacturing companies, is not turning profit these days.

AA owes a lot of money; they might also be delisted from the NYSE Amex stock exchange for not filing quarterly reports on time. But not to worry, they will survive because their market share in the industry is huge and everyone needs to get paid, even if they might end up in Bankruptcy protection. And bernos™ will continue to serve on the American Apparel brand.

Nolawi, hate to bring this up…read this wayyy back. thought I dig it up. what do you think?

All of which would be disturbing enough. But then there is the most recent controversy, in which disgruntled former employees leaked internal documents about nauseating hiring practices and employee “grooming” standards to Gawker — including comments about which “type” of black girl is appropriate to have working at the store — all of which paints a sordid picture of a company whose entire corporate culture is dominated by misogynistic, overgrown-indie-frat boy attitudes about women and sexuality, from policing haircuts to doling out raises based purely on sex appeal.

Ya so bad hiring practice claims are everywhere in the fashion industry… .. you can’t excape that even in hanes…

  3. 3 Mamitu

Slightly off topic but I find the ad’s picture quiet disturbing.

  4. 4 wow

Inda Habesha, wow! The link has another link to a NYTimes article which talks about AA’s (or the CEO’s) philosophy on business and the work environment. Especially page 6 is surreal.

The comment that was made was simply that AA is NOT for kids. AA is a sexually charged brand not fit to be on the back of children. Someone had the sense to look out for the children. Its the right thing to do.

It would help though if the owner of the company didnt have a pervy attitude in general and particulary to his workforce.

Kiki: I didn’t know Charney is a cultural icon… The best comment on the video was :

“except he wont grab any woman older than 19”.

18-19 makes a small pool to choose from, dont you think?

  19. 19 Maria

@ Kiki thank you that was funny, they got him good and proper by making him wear green Y-front ugh Is it true in reality he just wears a sock on his ding-la long?. Like someone else commented he might actually like being spoofed as a porn like figure. I cant stop laughing.

Inda Habesha, cultural icon is a word used carelessly nowadays, since when has manufacturing T-shirts become contributing to the cultural landscape and made someone a cultural icon?, T-shirts existed before Mr Charney and will continue to exist long after the next t-shirts baron comes into being, selling his merchandise to a mass market using sex by objectifying young women in its advertising which is uhm isnt exactly anything new or original and none will be known hundred years from the day by future generations as iconic figures of the 21st century. I think he will be mostly known as the man whose female employee sued him five times and counting which may have contributed in him running his company into the ground. That and the “bad accounting”.

  20. 20 wow

    Maria,

Yeah, seriously! I didn’t have any opinions about American Apparel before, but in light of what I’ve come to now know as the company’s philosophy and its rather unimpressive, over-sexualized CEO, they’ve lost me as a customer.

Sorry Nolawi, I imagine this is 100% opposite to what you expected/promoted.
