@ Hiwot:
I agree with you Hiwot. It's now even worse since pharmaceuticals make commercials for their medication. There are many patients who go asking for the meds without fully understanding what they are asking for. Pair that with a doc who doesn't do his/her research before agreeing to dish it out and you've got a potential problem on your hands.

Great article.

Vitamin A is as important as childhood vaccines. It prevent blindness.
Popping pills for every little pain is not an answer; I believe preventing the source of the pain is important.
Your weekly Migraine headache can be prevented if you know what is causing it. Work on what is triggering it. Triggers are cheese, chocolate, red wine and foods with MSG.

I had migraine headache since I was about 12. I used to “pop pills” Excedrin, Tylenol, Advil etc. Then it was Maxalt. Most of the time they don’t work. Then I stopped and learned how to manage it. I watch what I eat and learn what triggers it.
Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
Lack of coffee.
Too much coffee or too much herbal tea.
Junk food, cheese, foods with MEG, soda.
Stress.
I will never give up coffee. If I do get headache I take aspirin with coffee.

So Nolawi, try to work on your triggers to prevent your headache. Every pill has its own side effect. Once a week Advil is not that bad, but preventing ii is better.
Dont stress RELAX

Vitamins sometimes are prescription drugs when you take serious drugs for treating tuberculosis and meningitis such as "Rifampicin", "INH", "Ethambutol", "Pyrazinamide". I did take all these for 8 months, back home and my uncle was sending me. Just one pill of Rifampicin costs 3 birr back then and it has to be taken 2 a day for 8 months.

Then, TB (tuberculosis) is the popular cause of many death in Africa!

I think your process of analysis is very questionable:

"approximately an eight to a quarter of kids die each from malnutrition + Over the counter Vitamin A pills cost $10 = Medicine saves lives" huh???

The best remedy to malnutrition is adequate nutrition.
Vitamin A pills are nutritional suplements not prescription drugs.
I dont see where Medicine plays a role here. I'm not saying medicine has not contributed to the increase in life expectancy. I'm just saying, this was a confused and inadequate way for making that case.

Nightingale & Biskut - that's right, flax seed!

Also, about pills for depression - with client's I've worked with, sometimes therapy/friends/family/exercise/etc. is not enough for depression - this is especially the case for chemical based depression. I have worked with people that found depression medication to be very helpful without it needing to be a permanent thing. I remember a friend who got on it after years of depression said it was like living with bad vision and suddenly getting a pair of prescription glasses. Suddenly things were visible, clear, and it was easier to figure out how to make life better. Once he had a chance to work on those things he was able to get off the medication. However, it's really important to get the prescription from a psychiatrist rather than a general practitioner. A psychiatrist has better knowledge about psychotropics and can help someone find a better matching medication/dosage to avoid that zombie like state. Since doctors don't really know how psychotropics work on the brain (scary - i know) it sometimes takes trial and error to find the best match for your particular body chemistry. In the end, though I'm not big on pills, when working with a suicidal client who is not getting better I always refer them to a psychiatrist. It's better to be a zombie until things can be worked on than to be dead...

Nice article, affordable healthcare can never be over stressed.

I for one am against pills for depression since I've not seen anyone who started taking those pills come back to their normal state, they turn into walking zombies who won't harm anyone but can't function normal.

For an excellent source of Omega 3 buy cold milled telba...can't remember what it's called in English. Excellent source of Omega 3 that you can sprinkle into any foods you make (i eat it in my cereal.)

MJ'n (Micheal Jackson) Yaye Be Advil AyiChawetim!

Saying this, i try to find Vitamins that i think i may luck in my nutrition like Vitamin B17 since it is too difficult to get it from our none-organic food, or Omega 3 since i don't like Fish and so on.

But it is a good article as initiative for the poor
