I'm a vegan (no leather shoes :) ) and its another reason for me to love Ethiopian food. I feel better than ever and I love eating "fasting" dishes all year!!Well and some Tofu Tibs... As far as being hypocritical I mean spot light is shown on vegetarians because they are trying to voice their opinions versus everyone else who is just in the chow line. So I think the most important thing is to see what good someone is trying to do in the world instead of pointing out their shortcomings. I'm not trying to say I'm better than someone because I say I like animals and I want them to be treated better. Eating meat is not what's bad its treating animals like products and not giving them respect as awesome creatures that makes me feel sick. Just think about it....we can still be friends tho ;)

It's not more hypocritical than having to celebrate two New Years, two Easters, tow Christmases in a year or having adding a slab of lettuce on quarter pounder too meet FDA pyramid guide or opt for diet soda. ???? ??? ???!

I think that if people honestly saw how most of their meat got from the "Farms" to the stores (and subsequently to their tables)a lot more people would embrace vegetarianism. In my house, we're what they're now calling flexitarians - the bulk of food we eat is vegetarian but we do eat meat, and overwhelmingly organic when possible.

I know organic food is by and large a luxury and I totally believe in different strokes for different folks but just like those studies that try to debunk the value of eating organic food, there are studies that exist that say otherwise as well as studies that show leading a predominantly vegetarian lifestyle is good for you.

I eat animals and rarely will I turn down a good plate of kitfo - but the way that factory farming exists in this country is really kind of shameful. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factory_farming) And that isn't some PETA type propaganda.

To the guy comparing plants to animals. I don't think its causing animals pain that is an issue, its causing unnecessary pain. We should only kill those we'll eat, and we should go the extra yard in allowing them to live a somewhat humane life until we kill and eat them. I don't think that is too much to ask.

I am omnivorous, i guess, by nature and by choice. I take issues with people who don't eat meat citing animal cruelty because, last i checked, plants were alive too. Not only are they alive, but they are essential to the existence of ALL animals, whereas the death of a chicken or one human (not that i'm encouraging cannibalism) is hardly a loss on the grand scheme of things.

So my friends say 'but animals have feelings, and they squeal and stuff when you hurt them'. Screw that. So you're ok chopping a plant because it's not yelling at you? So you'd be ok killing a person w/ no vocal chords, or a paralyzed person too ... coz they won't yell at you?

If you don't like killing "things", why not stop eating altogether? That I'd have no argument against (mostly because you won't be here long, but that's beside the pt ... )

Alternatively, you can eat whatever you like ... and not bother mentioning your 'food politics' around me ... and I'd be totally cool with that too.

Me, survival of the fittest baby. I eat whatever doesn't eat me.

Biblical perspective on this: During creation man did not eat meat. (Genesis 1:29) "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the faceof all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat." After the Noah's flood, due to the devestation of echo system, God allowed for clean animals for consumption (Leviticus 11). The distinction of clean verses unclean meat:1) land- they have split hooves and chew their cuds. 2) water- those only with fins and scales. 3) on air-birds that do not fly. Noah who survived the flood lived to be 950 and currently the longest one can expect to live is ~ 110 years. How much of the decline in longevity could be related diet? other intresting diets to consider are Daniels diet and Ezekiel's Bread (Ezekiel 4:9)

I think my people (Ethiopians) got it right.

They fast many months out of the year. No meat no milk etc.
They fast half of the year if you count all the fast days including Wednesday and Friday. I am guessing.

1.They knew Telba (flax) is good for them before it become the “power food” in America. It is better than meat in a lot of ways Omega- 3 etc.
2.They knew Teff way before Americans start to call it “gluten free grain” and charge $6 per pound.

3.They knew Barley in “kolo” and its benefit before the west said barley Lowers Cholesterol, & helps in Intestinal Protection etc.: It’s high in beta glucan, which helps to lower cholesterol by binding to bile acids and removing them from the body. Etc.

Who needs meat when you have Shero, Gomen and meser wet…………..

There is nothing wrong with being vegan. It is a lifestyle that encourages peaceful co-existence.
If we are meant to eat other animals then why stop at beef, chicken or pigs? Why not eat cats, dogs, raccoons, rats? What's the difference? Veganism is not a new trend. BTW Albert Einstein was a vegan. Don't Ethiopian become vegans during tsome too?
Check out the link before below.
