vegeteriansim

A herbivore is an animal that has adapted to eat everything else but meat. A vegetarian is the same way. For what ever reason they made up a ‘rule’ that says that they are not suppose to consume meat.

I don’t like to exclude something as a ‘rule;’ although I have preferences. And preferences are better than rules.

For a long time one/two people in my family said that they do not eat seafood as a rule. I always thought what a waste it must be, to have such a palate that can distinguish between millions of tastes, and omit the whole ocean.

I mentioned it, and I asked ‘but you eat canned tuna.’ And he made a comment that tuna is different; chicken of the sea à la Jessica Simpson.

There are more extreme versions of vegetarians; thankfully I don’t know too many of these types of people but they call themselves Vegans.

Veganism is not just a dietary rule but also a lifestyle choice. The best thing about vegans is the fact they are not hypocrites like Vegetarians. Otherwise they have made some choices that supposedly won’t ensure optimal health by limiting your ability to ensure you eat a balanced diet.

Vegetarians are walking hypocrites; they claim they don’t want to put slaughtered animals in their mouth for ethical reasons.

Rahel is a vegetarian; she will not eat my meatballs when she comes to my dinner party. Thus when I invite her I have to make other arrangements— like telling her to eat before she comes. And she comes with her carry out but she is wearing a Bruno Magli leather shoes.

Rahelye, sorry I didn’t make special food for you?

Don’t worry about it Noli! I brought falafel & hummus!  And at least ‘nothing had to die for my dinner

Oh sharrup! you fuken hypocrite!

I’m with you on this one! my Aunt doesn’t eat meat (beef) but she eats everything else and she doesn’t call herslef a vegiterian.

im all for people eating what they want. just dont push your ideals on me.

we Abeshas eat too much meat. I think that will result increase number with High blood pressure and high cholestrol levels.I hear a lot of people saying that they have cholestrol etc.

I go for vegi 90% of the time/ no red meat and no chicken but I eat fish. I don’t buy or cook meat at home it has nothing to do with the killing of animal but just a choice. I prefer shero over sega wet. When I do go out on a date or with friends I will never refuse meat (tebs) or “Ketfo”. I just go with the flow.
I agree that we should not push our ideas on others.

I have heard abesha men say “Anbesa zer alebegn so have to have my meat”. Ok with me. I can cook meat for him if I like him a lot.

    But:

Vegetarians are bullshit, vegans i have more respect for, but still bullshit…you only live once, so if you eat a lot of meat, just make sure to get a colon cleanse and you will be good.

  9. 9 Selam T

I mean * for real Nolawi????.
you said: “selam t if ever u want to pick me up make sure u have some tiresiga… cuz i am carnivorous ”

I don’t plan to pick you up (East west thing). But if I did I would have better food than tere sega for you trust me. But I am amazed you “dumped” a girl because she is a vegan.

About 6 years ago I went to visit a farm in California. The cute and fat sheep were being fed something strange because the farm was small (about 100 sheep) I thought they would be “organic”.
I asked if they were organic. The farmer lady was not happy with my question. She said they have antibiotics in the “strange” food. Without that they will get all kind of infections and die. I accept her answer.

So when having lunch at the farm I felt like I was taking antibiotics.
Think about it Nolawi the carnivorous, tere sega in America over dose of antibiotics……
    My 2 cents.

i will eat anything but when I see cruelty done to animals I usually lose my appetite. I have eggs sittin in the fridge that I’m unable to touch cos I heard about cruelty to baby chicks being put through the grinder. :( It usually takes me a few weeks to get over the guilt, same thing happened with meat. That took me a year. Nowadays, I eat once a week tops, just like back home :) wey guuuuud

Come on Nolawi! How is Organic food is bad for one? And how is it that it doesn’t taste any better? Have you ever tasted the difference between Organic Milk and regular Milk? It is like night and day. I really encourage U to try it.
And by the way, I think selamT is right about the antibiotics, all this added antibiotic is bringing forth MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) which is life threatening and could cause gangrene which inturn could force one to have amputations or death…. And we should not forget rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) that is given to cows so that they will produce a lot of milk, which inturn ends up in humans, which can cause uncontrolled growth of cells (Cancer). You see cows live only for 2-4 years but all that rBGH we consume from cows treated with rBGH ends up in us, specially when those dairy cows are brought for slaughter and the rBGH starts the cancer in us. To top it all regular cows/cattle in the US are corn fed and this will cause them to have a marbled flesh (very dense in saturated fat) which can bring about high cholestrol, as opposed to grass fed organic cows/cattle whose meat is rich in Omega-3 fats that is the good kind of fat that can increase your HDL (High-density lipoprotein) in your blood stream.

So Nols, go ahead and eat your meat but stick to grass fed organic if you want to have a long healthy relatively cancer free life.

    Whew…

  15. 15 Nolawi

actually there has been millions of studies that say that non-organic food is safer…

    http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/node/1567

also on taste tests … people picked non-organic food over organic fruit 8 times out of 10

unless you are talking out of your a$$ link the studies… to all your facts.. start google.. and make sure your studies are uni level…

  16. 16 SelamT

Nolawi, I am in the west coast I can’t “pick you up”.

Organic taste better. Mamitu said it all. Antibiotics is an issue for me.
Try to drink Organic milk this weekend just one time please. It is very differentand taste better.

Try to eat brown organic egg just one time. It is different. It reminds you of home. Please try it to prove us wrong.

Go to Wild Oats or whole foods. For these 2 things (milk and eggs) the price is not that different.
I know most times they charge too much in the name of “organic”. Meat is one thing they over charge. good for me I don’t buy it.

  17. 17 Mamitu

Tsk, Tsk, … Nolawi, where are your manners? I am sure your mom wouldn’t be too happy with the name calling. You know you can make your point without it and it even comes accross better. :)

    About rBGH:
American Milk Banned in Europe because it has rBGH and Canada has banned the use of rBGH in cows.

About the anibiotic use and MRSA:

    http://www.center4research.org/wmnshlth/2007/mrsa.html
Somewhere in the report says that “…Another cause for concern is the use of antibiotics in livestock (Mayo Clinic, 2007). Cows, chickens, and pigs are often fed low levels of antibiotics over long periods of time, and this is believed to promote the survival of antibacterial-resistant bacteria in livestock. There is some concern that these resistant bacteria can be transferred to humans through direct contact with animals or the consumption of their meat…”

I’m with the organic group for sure. I cringe most of the time I eat genetically engineered foods. I gradually stopped thinking about it enji i used to be so unhappy when i sit to eat anything inorganic cos It’s so unnatural, synthetic and i feel like i am being cheated. If i had the money, everything in my house would’ve been organic.

Nolawi, when u said the inorganic garbage tastes better, ofcourse they make it so that it’s appealing to your taste buds, and if you’re driven by taste not by being health, then they have succeeded their goal.

Plse read kevin Trudeau: Natural Cures”they” don’t want you to know. You’d also know about the so called FDA and all those corporate hypocrites with thier Pharamceutical companies, what they feed us and what they care about.

Mamitu, you are not patronizing, you are sharing what you know and there’s nothing with that. I get ridculed by my friends so many times when i try to share what i know..but that doesn’t stop me.

There is nothing wrong with being vegan. It is a lifestyle that encourages peaceful co-existence.
If we are meant to eat other animals then why stop at beef, chicken or pigs? Why not eat cats, dogs, raccoons, rats? What’s the difference? Veganism is not a new trend. BTW Albert Einstein was a vegan. Don’t Ethiopian become vegans during tsome too?

I think my people (Ethiopians) got it right.

They fast many months out of the year. No meat no milk etc.
They fast half of the year if you count all the fast days including Wednesday and Friday. I am guessing.

1.They knew Telba (flax) is good for them before it become the “power food” in America. It is better than meat in a lot of ways Omega- 3 etc.
2.They knew Teff way before Americans start to call it “gluten free grain” and charge $6 per pound.

3.They knew Barley in “kolo” and its benefit before the west said barley Lowers Cholesterol, & helps in Intestinal Protection etc.: It’s high in beta glucan, which helps to lower cholesterol by binding to bile acids and removing them from the body. Etc.

Who needs meat when you have Shero, Gomen and meser wet…………..

Biblical perspective on this: During creation man did not eat meat. (Genesis 1:29) “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which [is] upon the faceof all the earth, and every tree, in the which [is] the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” After the Noah’s flood, due to the devestation of echo system, God allowed for clean animals for consumption (Leviticus 11). The distinction of clean verses unclean meat:1) land- they have split hooves and chew their cuds. 2) water- those only with fins and scales. 3) on air-birds that do not fly. Noah who survived the flood lived to be 950 and currently the longest one can expect to live is ~ 110 years. How much of the decline in longevity could be related diet? other intresting diets to consider are Daniels diet and Ezekiel’s Bread (Ezekiel 4:9)

I don’t have a problem people being vegeterian, I just don’t like it when they trying to look down on people who do eat meat and preach about it every chance they get. I’M A MEAT EATER! I LOVE IT!!!

  29. 29 Tobian

I am omnivorous, i guess, by nature and by choice. I take issues with people who don’t eat meat citing animal cruelty because, last i checked, plants were alive too. Not only are they alive, but they are essential to the existence of ALL animals, whereas the death of a chicken or one human (not that i’m encouraging cannibalism) is hardly a loss on the grand scheme of things.

So my friends say ‘but animals have feelings, and they squeal and stuff when you hurt them’. Screw that. So you’re ok chopping a plant because it’s not yelling at you? So you’d be ok killing a person w/ no vocal chords, or a paralyzed person too … coz they won’t yell at you?

If you don’t like killing “things”, why not stop eating altogether? That I’d have no argument against (mostly because you won’t be here long, but that’s beside the pt … )

Alternatively, you can eat whatever you like … and not bother mentioning your ‘food politics’ around me … and I’d be totally cool with that too.

Me, survival of the fittest baby. I eat whatever doesn’t eat me.

  32. 32 datdude

To the guy comparing plants to animals. I don’t think its causing animals pain that is an issue, its causing unnecessary pain. We should only kill those we’ll eat, and we should go the extra yard in allowing them to live a somewhat humane life until we kill and eat them. I don’t think that is too much to ask.

I think that if people honestly saw how most of their meat got from the “Farms” to the stores (and subsequently to their tables)a lot more people would embrace vegetarianism. In my house, we’re what they’re now calling flexitarians – the bulk of food we eat is vegetarian but we do eat meat, and overwhelmingly organic when possible.

I know organic food is by and large a luxury and I totally believe in different strokes for different folks but just like those studies that try to debunk the value of eating organic food, there are studies that exist that say otherwise as well as studies that show leading a predominantly vegetarian lifestyle is good for you.

I eat animals and rarely will I turn down a good plate of kitfo – but the way that factory farming exists in this country is really kind of shameful. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factory_farming) And that isn’t some PETA type propaganda.

I’m a vegan (no leather shoes :) ) and its another reason for me to love Ethiopian food. I feel better than ever and I love eating “fasting” dishes all year!!Well and some Tofu Tibs… As far as being hypocritical I mean spot light is shown on vegetarians because they are trying to voice their opinions versus everyone else who is just in the chow line. So I think the most important thing is to see what good someone is trying to do in the world instead of pointing out their shortcomings. I’m not trying to say I’m better than someone because I say I like animals and I want them to be treated better. Eating meat is not what’s bad its treating animals like products and not giving them respect as awesome creatures that makes me feel sick. Just think about it….we can still be friends tho ;)
