One of my uncles is extreemly guregna. although he’s about 10yrs older than me we used to always get in to arguments over his gura. at least once a day….that’s how i learned i didn’t like guregna men. Other women found him to be charming. Zema endalechiw art’u geb’tuwachewal meselegn. As for me, gura is gura…I’m not cultured enough to appreciate the art i guess

I don’t have a full handle on the guregna term but if its what I think it is I have a story to tell. My cousin is in a deep shit all because in trying to get his friend understand who he was talking about he called a friend of a friend “the guy who has muscles for a brain.” Translate that to tigrina or amharic (iti b qilsumu dihasib wedi) you’ll fall and roll– It reminded me of a note left under a car’s windshield that was illegally parked–”shit for a brain.” My friend went to his friend, the muscle for a brain, and blew the thing out of proportion. I had to step in so I can warn my cousin. In doing so I told my cousin first don’t you leave your house for a full year and if he finds you just take the beat down and from now on stop talking about people, don’t gossip. He says ” what should I talk about… About chickens”. Translate that again, he is a funny guy. His mouth can get him out of trouble as much as it gets him in trouble

I happen to think guregnanet ….if done well….is quite attractive in men… it is an art, and some ppl have it and some don’t…i am not talking about stupid bragging like what he is and what he owns minamin…. I mean subtle things like “the way he walks into a room as if he owns it” or “the way he keeps his words to a minimum….man of few words neger….so when he speaks everyone stops to listen…” …that is damn great… but unfortunately it has to come naturally plus requires underlying wisdom, because it could be disastrous if forced or within the wrong hands..

Bearable guregna should be considered normal. We all need to brag here and there. Especially, at the early stages of dating, you should allow some level of bragging…If there is anyone who says I never brag, it is either their mirror gives them a distorted picture of themselves or they are descendants of an angel…

Chronic guregna are people with some serious underlying issues: inferiority, superiority, mediocrity…you name it…They are a waste of time and you should run away…

And there is a lot of grey area in between the two…:)

Mima, I don’t know if many ppl label others guregna for merely mentioning what they drive. But if someone uttered ‘let me get my book from my Mercedes’, I’d say s/he is trying to show off…wouldn’t you?
I had a friend who told me what he had and achieved, less than a week after we first met…I mean, from what he is worth to the boat he owns! And when we get to know each other and told him as a friend that ladies would think he’s trying to buy them with what he has and that he should not talk about what he owns with people he hardly knows, he was angry and said ‘that’s why I don’t date abeshas, they can’t handle successful men’…phew!
