Your Own Lies 46 Comments

We rationalize, and rationalize our actions.

I pride myself in telling the truth,…”

One would say and then just lessen the blow to ones integrity. I am sure I am guilty as well, I live my life in a way I am comfortable, but I know there are things in my life I have to fix.

I just like most of you have personal and professional issues that needed to be resolved.

I once read on a blog that a guy was asking if he didn’t do take some classes that he was required to through the court system for a DUI he received some eight years ago in a different state far away, could he get away with it?

The answer was that his crime was petty and in a different state that is so far that legally they wouldn’t try extraditable him for financial reasons.

Then another guy answered, said that if he just didn’t go deal with what he has to do then it’s always going to be there over his head haunting him forever.

I was like wow, he is right; some things will always be there to haunt you.

One of the most common stories of family lies is that a woman would have extramarital affairs and get pregnant and would tell herself that the baby is actually her husbands. And that lie would continue to exist forever and ever.

If you don’t believe me Google it! “Another man’s baby!”

I recently saw an episode of Oprah on infidelity statistics. According to the data

  • 22 % of married men have strayed at least once during their married lives.
  • 14 % of married women have had affairs at least once during their married lives.
  • 70 % of married women and 54 % of married men did not know of their spouses’ extramarital activity.

So this is not about the cheating; it’s about people living with their lies.

Learning to live with lies is really not that hard. You just tell it to yourself repeatedly until u are convinced it is true……. then it becomes the truth … and from then on you defend “the truth” with your life.

“Learning to live with lies is really not that hard. You just tell it to yourself repeatedly until u are convinced it is true……. then it becomes the truth … and from then on you defend “the truth” with your life.”

LOL you can also convince yourself the truth is a lie. That’s how “70 % of married women and 54 % of married men did not know of their spouses’ extramarital activity.” because they believed the truth to be a lie until it damn near kicked their ass right into reality.

I know a friend that has gone into the same sort of thing mentioned earlier… his father was suspicious about him for some reason That I don’t know and got his son tested his blood DNA(I’m not sure about the exact name of the test)and found out that they don’t have any blood relations at all!
That poor father was shocked by the outcome and throw out both his son and his wife from his home! I laughed when I first heard the story but at the same time I was amazed by the dude’s mom. She kept the secret for 21 years! That’s very shocking indeed but do you think that Ababa did a right thing to expel them eventhough…?
    I don’t think so…

Confession, confession, confession, one good thing catholic nuns taught me…why live with the heaviest burden, guilt? Confess, don’t hide truth, accept the consequences, in all this, one can retain a clear conscience.

  11. 11 Hidaya

    Zema,

This is a generalised definition of truth as it is in the dictionary…

“The meaning of the word truth extends from honesty, good faith, and sincerity in general, to agreement with fact or reality in particular.[1]

The term has no single definition about which a majority of professional philosophers and scholars agree, and various theories of truth continue to be debated. There are differing claims on such questions as what constitutes truth; how to define and identify truth; the roles that revealed and acquired knowledge play; and whether truth is subjective, relative, objective, or absolute”…

Defending a truth with your life, which in actual fact is only a truth because you want it to be and not the actual truth based on true facts.

I am curious how does this work? and what exactly would you be defending with life and limb; the truth as you want it to be regardless of facts? or the truth based on true facts?, I am not sure what you would be defending in that case but I doubt it would be the truth if you choose a self perpetuaging myth or lie over true representation of facts….

    Hi datdude,

Confession, acceptance of wrong doing, penance, popular formula for a conscience at peace and a guilt free existence I agree in theory, question is does it always work in practice and and are all truths equal?…

  12. 12 toothpick

if you are a monotheist, it really shouldn’t be difficult to convince yourself that a lie is the absolute truth. hell, your entire faith is based upon that premise, ain’t it?

  13. 13 yachilej

One of my favorite persons always says “there’s only one truth, people make it unique” which absolutely follows ur thought tpick, totally agree- aren’t humans special because of our ability to rationalize (did i get that from some great thinker or is it me?)..

ps. nuthin wrong with watchin Oprah, just thought I’d point to the nonissue :)

  14. 14 Tsedey

polytheists’d better hold their impiety to themselves.

“And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.”

    Matthew 12:31

  15. 15 toothpick

sounds like a “with us or against us” type of nonsense.

it’s cute how the god of love resorts to petty little threats, sometimes.

i try to present reasonable/logical arguments, you sheeple throw biblical threats at me.

fear must clearly be curbing your enthusiasm to using your own individual brain.

but all that is all a sidebar. the point i was trying to make was: if people can actually hold on to “faith,” then a lie should actually be a piece of cake. that’s it.

  16. 16 Tsedey

You can easily present your argument with out being contemptous is my point. Peace!

  17. 17 toothpick

“contempt” is a strong word. i prefer “distaste” … or “dismissive” :)

  18. 18 Tsedey

    Let it be…distasteful one. :)

    Hey Nolawi: out of topic…
but i like your name & thinking to name my son in the future. but What is it mean? does ppl mispronounce it like the one on the Bernos video?

  23. 23 Nolawi
  24. 24 Walid

    Toothpick,

Your argument sounds, well, interesting. But how does your “reasonable/logical argument” arrived at the seeming conc that faith is a lie? It is really a sweeping statement coming from someone claiming to be” reasonable/ logical.” Reason dictates caution in these matters, for reason/logic itself comes short in explaining myriads of phenomena, natural or otherwise.

I know you asked nolawi but if nolawi will allow me …
Nolawi means eregna as in melkam eregna, good shepherd (christ) tebaQi ,sebsabi etc ..

    Toothpick
Too wordy.I guess being an athiest is in .It makes you look contemporary and flexible. You sound aloof and detached with yourself. What a sorry skinny azz.
Indifference must clearly be curbing your enthusiasm to using your own individual brain.

    hi hidaya, Long time,

“question is does it always work in practice”

I really think honesty/confession if consistently practiced it does help those of us with a sensitive conscious to stomach what we see in the mirror better. It seems also more practical in the sense of correcting a wrong, since the alternative is perpetuating one lie by introducing two or three more. In my view it can also safeguard language as we know it, which as we can observe in this election season (in USA), is brutally being ravaged by the McBama campaigns through doublespeak, exaggerations and spin. For example the words conservative, experienced, vetted, opposed and ready have suddenly become confusing to me. (suddenly orwell 1984 comes to mind lol)

    “are all truths equal”

I’m not sure what do you think? :) I have certain preference for truthiness (Colbert report lol) when it involves two or more people, such as paternity issues, cheating, etc… The lesser truth in my view would be that which is expressed for a malicious purpose. Such as someone denouncing jews to the gestapo. (Anne frank also comes to mind)

  27. 27 Mamitu

I don’t see anything wrong with what toothpick said. How can one be irreverent of something/someone whom he doesn’t believe is god? I think the world is big enough for all of us and that she/he is entitled to her/his opinion.

  28. 28 Hidaya

    Hi datdude…

“Yeah, long time no see, how have been?:)…..

So we agree confession is good for the soul:) and this is best when it between confessor and priest. This kind of confession allows one person to un-burden themselves and the other to guide the confessor thru the process…sometimes though people confess to others (not higher powers)but the motivation is the same, to be absolved and to be forgiven and in addition to leave the burden of guilt they cant deal with any longer to others who are priests and trained in it. Some people just confess to get rid of their guilt about whatever they were confessing irrespective of how that would affect the non preist person they are confessing to ,if infact the confession might involve the betrayal of them.

In this respect and these kind of confessions I personally find are done out of a selfish need to get rid of guilt, so the primary motivation is still to absolve oneself of guilt and in this case I dont think the reasons for speaking out the truth are honest and they might even be self serving… what do you think?…

“For example the words conservative, experienced, vetted, opposed and ready have suddenly become confusing to me. (suddenly orwell 1984 comes to mind lol)”

Lol…You are not alone datdude, the word that comes most to my mind when reading about the latest in your elections comings and goings is qualified anyone? one of yours come to mind too…ie the true meaning of vetting lol

“I’m not sure what do you think? :) I have certain preference for truthiness (Colbert report lol) when it involves two or more people, such as paternity issues, cheating, etc… The lesser truth in my view would be that which is expressed for a malicious purpose. Such as someone denouncing jews to the gestapo. (Anne frank also comes to mind)”….

There are so many truths datdude I am confuded by them all, are some more important than others? yes I beleive so …there is the truth of lawyer and the the truth of the priest and the truth of the politician, make that one very relative truth but at least it is still based obn treu facts and many other truths ,.. some truth are more easily verifiable than others, the truths that bother me the most are the ones based on sujective something not verifiable but touted as the ultimate truth…I am about to learn all about Colbert, that is after getting to grips with John Stewart and the Today show latetly….

  29. 29 Sara

    Nolawi, Biskut,
    Thanks for the answer.
Geeze huh. it’s cool a name.

think the world is big enough for all of us and that she/he is entitled to her/his opinion.

    mamitu
what world are you exactly refering to here ? the world that the god of abraham created or the world that believes in the big bang crap ?
uuuuf agul silitane endemereregne soooo…between cultures you guys .

  31. 31 Mamitu

The way I see it, whether one believes like the Bakuba in Africa that the Earth was nothing but water and darkness and Mbombo, the white giant ruled over this chaos. One day, he felt a terrible pain in his stomach, and vomited the sun, the moon, and the stars. Or like the Scientologist who believe an alien called Xenu, was the dictator of the “Galactic Confederacy” who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of his people to Earth in DC-8-like spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes and killed them using hydrogen bombs and that they that their essenses remained and form around people in modern times, causing them spiritual harm. I say to each his own, as long as no one tells me that what I worship the right God and what you believe is wrong.

  32. 32 blah

TP for the last time we donot share your crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth. So please spare us from the ‘logic, truth, fact’ rhetoric.

  33. 33 toothpick

at least you acknowledged the “fetters of indoctrination.” there was nothing painful about the process though.

and on that note, i’ll leave it alone … for now.

  34. 34 Tsedey

ofcourse it won’t be painful if there isn’t anything to let go in the first place.

  35. 35 Wurgatu

the world that the god of abraham created or the world that believes in the big bang crap ?

are you mentally retarded??? even my sister(i have a mentally retarded sis) can reason out better…chinkeh azuro alay kaleh zim ayishalm???
