3° of Separation 15 Comments

The title is my own disambiguation of the more popular “Six Degrees of Separation” — influenced by an email conversation I had with a reader.

It’s such a small world aydel?

If I had a cent for every time I heard that one! I would still be poor; even so I have heard so much that I would hardly run out of change.

The phrase actually refers to the impression that:

…if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is an average of six “steps” away from each person on Earth. Source

The Small World Experiment

Another one of those books; you see at the book store and never ‘grab to buy’ because you know you will never actually sit down to read it. I have hundreds, maybe it’s the sense of visual aesthetics but I remember a cover even if I don’t remember the title or the author.

I look at the font and the placement of the title; I read the title and maybe grab it to seek the super cliff notes version. Ya, I have read it – I read the back page and the author’s profile.

The Man Who Shocked The World: The Life & Legacy of Stanley Milgram

You see – it was a biography of the guy who did the small world experiment. The source of the phrase; basically he examined the average path length for social networks of people in the US- ie Six Degrees of Separation.

It’s such a small world aydel?

Ya, for Ethiopians living outside of Ethiopia; the elites who can afford a plane ticket – relatively speaking – are actually connected in a social network smaller in average length in comparison to the rest of earth’s population.

Although I am not familiar with his experiment – I got the wiki version of it and it’s as random the balls in the lottery bowl.

Hence, to the conclusion of the email conversation that started in the morning of that day and ended at night – apparently I knew her at least by name.; reinforcing by her claim that 6 is actually 3; as in 3 ° of Separation; at least among Ethiopians abroad.

I’m gonna share a quick example in appreciation cus this topic IS the story of my life…
A few years back, during a weekend away, I “hooked up” with a guy I thought I’d probly never see again. A few days later, I’m back home sharing my random makeout story with a close girlfriend.. aaand, he’s her cousin. WHAT the heck are the odds?!?

3 degress is more like it among abeshas. Thats why I avoid abesha gatherings because I might run into somebody that I owe some shit…

If you are part of the ethiopian elite, the degree of separation is maybe 1, :) – especially the elite from 15-20 yrs before. They all went to the addis ababa private schools, their parents either worked together or went to school together. There is no escaping from one another in this circle. And now thanks to the likes of facebook and others, the degree of separation is practically nil.

it does feel like 3 degrees of sepration amongst habeshas lol..i dont care where you go you are going to run into somebody you know or that knows some one you know, in our circle lol..its like the myspace section on the right corner that says “my network” then its says like “800,876,026″..i aint think too much of it but after readin this and looking at that it makes u think how small the big world really is.

whatever technical separation – x connects to y and q…sounds bout right…but for sure 1-3 or whatever degree does not do justice to the claustrophobic effect of gossip in the bubble now, does it?

Undeniably believe that which you stated. Your favorite justification seemed to
be on the internet the easiest thing to be aware of.
I say to you, I definitely get irked while people think about worries that they plainly don’t know about.

You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having
side effect , people could take a signal.
Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
