not just email 48 Comments

Almost everyone who is anyone has an email address. Of course most things require some sort of online access.

If you work, you have a paycheck, and if you have a paycheck you have a bank, and if you have a bank you need to access it; possibly online

To access it online you need an email address.

Have a cell phone? Of course you do! Enquane in the west, I heard everyone in piassa has one; or so I heard.

After about eight years I switched cell phone carriers and when I signed up they asked me for my email address. I live, work and socialize through email; and I thought everyone did. In the past, I have stopped dating some girls for lack of checking emails.

An old friend that was recently in town had called to ask if I could pick her up from the airport. I asked for her itinerary via email; she asked if she had to and preferred to just tell me the time.

I went to the airport and her flight had been delayed. If she had emailed her itinerary I would have checked the status of the flight before I left for the airport and thus saved 20 minutes of my very valuable time.

The function

Apparently someone came from Ethiopia and wanted to visit with my uncle who is so busy that when the guest asked if he could hangout, he would say “not today I have a function.

“Function alebign” as he would phrase it. “I can’t this weekend, a function came up.”

Irrevocably, the guest upset about leaving without spending ‘quality time,’ called to ask about the function.

Who is this fakshing that every minute of your life is consumed by it?

I attend these functions; I don’t really call them functions rather events; but I want to incorporate in the ‘fakshing’ story.

Let’s keep in touch, what your phone number?”

I would push back and say I prefer emails. If it’s important enough, they would email and if it’s not, they will never get to it.

If I am asking, I would ask for emails, especially the girls. This way, I keep a note attached to my address book. Betty, Miami, and accountant- thus she gets an email from me; possibly I will send her the picture we took at this function.

Most of the people, especially the ladies, I would never return get a reply; mostly because the emails are lost in between the Nigerian scam and Airline deals or so I assume.

I don’t understand your sentence structure here can you please explain ?

Do you know if there is a way that I can block my e-mail from spam. when I kept getting 100 sometimes 200 spams in my in box I decided to sign up for another email address. emails.
I also receive e-mails that claim I’ve won or I am about to inherit millions of dollars They just need me to send them by bank account or to call a phone #
This is so annoying. There are so many leboch on the internet I worry they have my info.
Nothing bad has happened so far thank God.
    but betam metenkek yasfeligal.

e-mail is great but I still prefer to talk on the phone. I like to laugh and hear my friend’s and family voices.
My husband is different than me is an email and text message all day kind of guy. He won’t pick up the land line at all.
He drives me crazy when I am calling home and he lets it ring for so long then the voice mail comes.aaaagrrrrr
I yelled at him this weekend for not answering the phone while I was at the grocery store. He apologized and promised he will answer the phone from now on.
that’s it for now. Thanks for reading.

that is what I assume happens..

One of the things that we had to deal with when we started bernos was to show people that things are safe online..

some people did not trust us because we are abesha… some still don’t and say they don’t shop online minamin

Inat, the best solution is don’t give your email address to your friends who like to forward to your email like about that girl who needs a donation from AOL if you forward it to 100 people. I hate those people.

If i am introduced to a person for the first time, i prefer email. starting up with email is easier. In addition, i am usually lazy to pick my phone right away and people don’t like that. Some people don’t even leave message. If they don’t, i may not call them. But the beauty of email is, you can read it anytime, respond any time, and you just write mostly important issues unlike on the phone you say “Dehin Nehi – Dehin Neshi” 100 times just to create conversation.

Email – i think ppl are more virtually connected depending on how they spend their day. if you’re in an office job most days you tend to be more connected than if you’re out and about.

In the past year, i have become a computer-head! lol… more present in the virtual world…to a point where some weeks (especially recently), I would chat with friends more than talk with them on the phone… The good thing is, we are more ‘connected’ — we are are actually up-to-date on each other’s daily shenanigans to the craziest details…even when these friends are abroad…but on the flip side: we call each other less and miss out on the voice etc…

i’m losing my voice control due to loss of phone action. Yes my fingertips are chiseled like a michaelangelo marble sculpture, but the voice, oh my beautiful voice. Also rapidly deteriorating are my listening skills. Maybe this is partly due to old age, not just an email centric lifestyle.

Never ever open a spam email. Delet or register as spam.
If you open a spam, they will multiply in millions like a mosquito.

I am hijacked. My google search hyperlink gets redirected, hijacked always to some commercial sites. What do I need to download to fix it? I have Norton, and adwear and spywear which I run periodically, can’t fix it. Whatever it is, its completely changing my experience as the workarround has become a habit.

I hate people who called and don’t leave a message. Not only that they claim that they have called. What is that mean? They must have dialed the # by mistake or something. How would I read their mind? To me it is so annoying. If they make effort to dial the 10 digits or more what is the hard part to leave a short message. I don’t get it. I agree with ep. If they don’t leave message I won’t return their call too.

Anonx ma man, refrain from clicking on those emails that come with blue eyed, blond girls who claim to know u :)

But on a serious note, if u use Microsoft Explorer, then stop asap. Download Firefox 3, get rid of Norton antivirus (it sux big time) and download AVG free. That should do it for now.

  9. 9 Nolawi

Some people don’t check their messages – its always full they only check the missed call list on the celly…

    i think that is ok..

That’s right!!! Avoid those triple-X sites…then Firefox and AVG should do the trick for ya…

    Datdude…

Do your chiselled fingertips a la` Michelangelo:) embarrass you habitually by pressing the wrong key and send your email to not only its intended recipient in addition to many more un-intended? then, get ready for face mortification…

I am ok with email generally apart from that one affliction of mine, I use it to keep in touch with my friends, people, and work too, I always reply to my emails, spam is filtered on one email, on the other I still get them. I have been offered all sorts of things I never even thought of wanting and told I won many more, I play a trick on spammers and tell them they have just emailed a police officer and I never hear from them…

Anonx, sorry about the spammers highjack:)….

Nyala I have both Firefox not sure if it 3, and IE, but on one of my emails, filtering doesn’t work and get spammed daily, do I need to get rid of my IE as well?

  12. 12 nyalasmoke

Hidaya, Firefox is better at keeping your pc safe. It does a good job minimizing browser hijacks, pop ups, detecting malicious websites and other types of external attacks. But spams depend on your internet providers ability to filter traffic from spammers and the degree to which they prevent your email address from falling into the wrong hand (which is mostly up to u to figure out).

But then again there are those that say that we just have to accept spam as yet another inevitable daily annoyances that we have to live with.

In the meantime, as u probably know already, u can minimize spam by diligently identifying and reporting them. Most email clients, including online email programs like yahoo and hotmail have a button at the top that allows u to mark spams and block email from the domain that generates the spam. Also never, ever sign up online with the email that u regularly use. You don’t know where that info will end up. Just get another email account just for that purpose.

  13. 13 Anonx

Got it guys, Ted and Nyla… thanks for that piece of advice. I thought that’s what the Ad and Spy wears are suppose to prevent. I have Firefox, will migrate asap, may have to update it. Never heard of AVG,will download asap– no shame in my game yo!:)

Hidaya, ayadris new yemibalew. i recently heard a married couple sent some VERY private photos to their entire address list all over the globe, including very young family members! the receipients aren’t sure if they should tell the couple or not, they’re not even sure if the couple are aware of the mishap! Talk about mortification yikes!

lol datdude, i’m not a phone person either, i admire ppl who can spend hours and hours non-end on the phone. honestly i can’t do it. email is great especially at work, great to avoid some nonesense chatter. what can you do but grunt and roll your eyes when one person unnecessarily cc’s you on an email and you keep getting endeless replies with ok’s and thank’s on teh same thing!

some companies have begun a ‘no-email’ day. somedays, i sure feel like all i do is reply emails. i had a boss who kept her blackberry by her bedside and wakes up to check it everytime it buzzes. crackberry indeed. check it out.

    hidaya,

that is very embarrassing, especially when the details of that email are spicy. Thankfully it has yet to happen to me, maybe i’m learning to be cautious since verbally I’ve committed more than my fair share of faux pas.

BTW, Nyalasmokes is right, firefox/mozilla or something is the best browser i’ve ever used. So many features, none of that crash of IE. I highly recommend it. I also recommend not clicking on those tantalizing blue eyed blonds ;) j/k annox we know its all about brunettes.lol
Nyalasmoke–that Ethiopian heroes video got my heart pumping, I might go and do some pushups. Interesting videos overall :)

Abtori–have you found a delicate way of removing yourself from those forward emails? I get most from friends so I can’t block it….or can’t I? (insert evil laugh)

  17. 17 Hidaya

    Thanks for the advice Nyala,

I agree, Firefox does a pretty good job of stopping highjacks and malicious website attacks, my problem is with Aol which is my service provider, yes they have filters for the spammers and all that but it is mainly manually done and I have to identify who is spamming and not and then chuck their spam mail into the spam folder, but even that is problematic as the filtering sometimes throws all genuine email addresses it doesn’t recognise into the spam folder too, mostly I ignore spammers unless they are being fraudulent, maybe I should start reporting them to Aol …thanks again Nyala, got rid of IE as well….

Hidaya, ayadris new yemibalew. i recently heard a married couple sent some VERY private photos to their entire address list all over the globe, including very young family members! the receipients aren’t sure if they should tell the couple or not, they’re not even sure if the couple are aware of the mishap! Hi AbTori….

Oops yikes indeed, how utterly mortifying, how on earth did that mishap happened, were they sending the private stuff to each other and then maybe their fingertips brought them disgrace, the poor recipients eyes:), if I was them I wouldn’t know what to do either…

nowadays ‘are you on facebook’ has replaced email/phone# requests when you meet new folks or reconnect with old ones..

Here we are watched 24/7 and not only for security purposes but employers and potential employers go googling your name and snoop around watching your behaviour outside of work and yes they can use that agaisnt you as well when the time comes…

    Hi Datdude…

Spiceness is best face to face I feel,:), that way it can be misused and no recordings made of it or putting on the net by accident or design either, when it is electronic it does not only bring a great deal of embarrassment if it goes astray, it outlives you and all and that I find it quite daunting, but spicy contents in emails are not the only ones that embarrass, others make you want to crawl up and ie too:)when you send confidential stuff to the wrong people, or caught discussing something really only meant for one other person and it is about something personal about them they trusted you with it and you then send it to all those who were never supposed to know about it, and for a finale then being disowned by friend for having unreliable fingertips, didn’t even matter I do that to myself as well as others, still got disowned and called untrustworthy, cry sniff….

that is very embarrassing, especially when the details of that email are spicy. Thankfully it has yet to happen to me, maybe i’m learning to be cautious since verbally I’ve committed more than my fair share of faux pas

Nyala, I’m an overnight convert to Firefox. I’m back! I wish I could say I’ll never use explorer again, unfortunately at work its all I have. You and Da Dude, you’ll be disappointed… but the B&B&Bs dont have a chance in my fantacies, no play time for them no matter what they want me to believe. datdue, unfortunately i’ve not found a ‘delicate’ way myself. i don’t wanna block them cuz i’m too forgetful to remember and check my junk box frequently and i’m afraid i might miss an important or better, a juicy email from my friends. i used to leave FWDs in my inbox saying i’ll read & share later but they multiply overnight and i finally lost the battle. now i screen by sender & subject and open it if i only think it’s email-email. it usually gets my attention if it’s yager guday, minamin or else it’s going to trash. don’t you guys HATE the ones with if you don’t send this to 50ppl you’ll have bad luck ridiculous.. goodluck with your screening :)

“for a finale then being disowned by friend for having unreliable fingertips, didn’t even matter I do that to myself as well as others, still got disowned and called untrustworthy, cry sniff….” lol, it comes as a shock to me also, that people no longer forgive indiscriminate faux pas lol. I got mean friends datdude, not kind like you:)I am never allowed to forget of all my edwardina scissorhand episodes however far in time they might have been, however after much grovelling I am forgiven, sort of, not sure if it full forgiveness,.. still like imminent danger my fingertips come with a warning and all friends advice each other and new folk to not discuss anything other than the weather with me on email. I really don’t have a single argument that is favourable to me to rebut all this, lol so I suffer the reviling of my fingertips…perhaps I should ask Anonx the best way to make my fingertips eandering to people who just wont trust it?, Brownie points for Anonx:)brown and black rock!…….

I just don’t sweat the small staff. There is a book about it. Never read it, I hate self help books, so common sense. The book sat shelved, I actually stole it, more like took it from the library of my first employer. Took few books… they will never know, they never read’em. I wouldn’t do it again, its not mine. Yea, I once stole a book from my professor too. I went to see him in his office, but did not find him, but found Race Matters, by Cornell West seating on his desk. Sorry man, it was me and enjoyed your American history class if it’s any consolation, and to make it up to you, I will donate books too people in need. Speaking of donation, I use to do volunteer work at a place called Treasure Trove, a non-profit shop. They sell everything you can think of, as the name suggests, it’s where thrift and antique shoppers go. The proceeds go to area hospitals. All donated items. All sorts of people, poor, stingy, treasure hunters come. This lady, a teacher, I was told found a first edition of an old book and flipped it on Amazon for $500 and I started flipping to find a first edition. I also had the pleasure serving an Ethiopian couple–bless your heart– who bought boxes of children books which we sold for 50 cents and the books are in Addis now.

My brother in law wanted something to read, and what the heck, I will never read it, I got enough from the title, here read Don’t Sweat the Small Staff, its not mine anyway. He read it, good for him. Then he wanted to know, is it that obvious that he sweats the small staff, how did I know. You read the book and you are sweating the small staff after you read it, if it makes you feel any better, we all sweat the small staff except yours truly who makes an attempt not to sweat the small staff cause my head does not have room for the small staff. Definitely not shame of disclosure of the sorts we all practice.

I don’t know about your emails though Hidaya. I only do IM, personal emails rarely, and only business. I’d forgive, and tell myself don’t trust her on email. It’s your mistake as much as its hers. :)

    Anonx,

    Amusing raconteuring,:)thanks,….

Taking books from libraries and not returning them is not stealing, it is borrowing it for longer than one is allowed to,I should know:), then go give it all back on amnesty day for books where the risk of being fined within an inch of your life is diminished…

Incidentally I once saw an old tutor pinching a Reference book from the library for private purposes like which is a no no officially , in his hurry to do so he forgot all about the security code, the look on his face when it rang,…then everyone looked at him but then cool as you like he walked to the desk and stated quite cheekily he needed to take the ref book from its home to another one for few hours to teach his student and that he would just do that and if anyone objects they can take it to the Uni Chancellor, they all smiled at him and said it was ok he could bring the book back in few hours or days…he was one of those Prof who really were born to teach and his students and the entire Uni loved him pinching books or not I thin he was notorious for it …lol..I’ve never tried coz I would have never gotten away with it usually I just waited for amnesty day to come:)….

Cornell West Race matters, I think is a book I might wanna read, self help books, for the very young it might be useful at a time they need pointers form fol other than their familes or when they wont listen to anybody else, for grown ups and self help books, not really sure, it is seems passive to me ,I think the best way to learn and enjoy one’s life, the good, the bad, the sad , the cringignly embarrassing, the regretable as well the joyous and pleasant experiences is to actually experience it and live trough it, to me that is the best way to learn…..

I I’d forgive, and tell myself don’t trust her on email. It’s your mistake as much as its hers.

well yes it should be forgive, forget and be wary on email, in my case I think it might be, forgive and remind lol, which I am ok with since it is all self inflicted, what gets me though Anonx is I get no sympathy , when I mention I too have been made to cringe and my words too went everywhere so why no sympathy and hugs of commiseration for me?, when I mention that, my friend looks at me like she want to inflict pain on me and says “and?” I dont wait for the predictable “do I need to remind you who did that?” and switly change the topic from my disastrous finger tips previous sins, lol…
