Wow, just wow. The number of bernos blog readers is growing by the month, averaging 700 unique visitors per day.
That means more than a few hundred people, consisting of mostly Ethiopians in North America, seriously follow the bernos crew around.
I met lots of people, mostly those that just read about us, and so they came up to me in droves at least ten or more times per day while present at the ESFNA soccer tournament seven days doing my thing with the bernos crew.
Meron is working on a full recap for the events and project we participated in as well as the near future plans of bernos as we are going through major structural changes due to finish by October 08.
Back to the readers, one guy came up to me to give me a hug, I am like dude I don’t hug guys but he was unjustly excited because he just wrote a major article on a popular magazine which he showed me, about Ethiopian Jazz. He is currently a freelance writer with a small local magazine in South Dakota. No more details here because this post is not about him. He claimed he used the bernos blog for references on Ethiopian Jazz.
I met a few people that I knew through email and had no idea what they looked like. One girl although I knew her very well drew blank when she told me who she was. You see I had never expected some of these people I know to be email people to be real people.
It’s super weird and they are all over the place, California and Toronto were seriously representing; the locals I had already met. One guy was really upset with me because I didn’t remember who he was; you see he is not a bernos reader but his wife is and she must have introduced me to him more than a few times.
In reality, I am good with names and faces but I don’t remember every acquaintance – those I meet very casually. I do meet dozens of people every week, from my day job to my night job but mostly from my social life here in DC.
Every gathering brings a slew of people from a somewhat diverse background together. Sometimes I meet people I have seen since I originally met them two years ago. One girl I was checking out from the behind, she had nice legs and ass too. She said she knew me, my face looked familiar and I was thinking she was one of those people who thinks they know me just because they have seen my picture online or on some publication.
Eventually after she told me her name and I mine, we realized we knew each other and then voila she said she sat on my lap at an Aster concert, I now realize that this was four years ago and we had exchanged numbers after a full night of flirting… she is betam cute from South Carolina or somewhere around there.
She gave me her email address probably for the second time but I am just remembering that this actually happened as I am writing this post.
A few people with interest of business nature, young ones too; I did meet this young guy from the southwest, with whom I chatted about certain ventures casually.
Although we didn’t exchange contact information, called me after finding my contact info somehow, I told him to send me his email so that we can keep in touch and possibly pursue his ideas. I was very impressed by the level professionalism these really young Ethiopians showed.
And the models, or pursuing a career in the modeling industry; I met a few that really were serious about it and wanted to see if they could participate in bernos photos and or events. A girl came up to me chatted with me for about half an hour, left her business card and when I got home I received an email thanking me for taking the time to talk with her about bernos. Impressive!
In actuality the perception of Nolawi, or even bernos much larger than reality, thus some people look at me as someone important even though I am of no major significance by any standard. I never liked that, I feel like I am misleading them.
Some people are patronizing , they look down on you and talk to you within the constraints of a community. Some people are talkers, they just talk and talk and talk and never do anything. I just listen and then leave.
In all, I love my people betam, the girls, the young people, the hustlers, the business people. The faras too, fara people are cool, by the yuppie standards I could be considered fara. Anyone who does anything within our community is somewhat fara. they say.
I like most of my people, except the yuppie Engineers. I am tired of engineers with low-mid level salaries and no original thoughts acting like they’re better than everyone else. You are just IT telalaki that has training using a calculator.

Nol, it was wonderful meeting you, dawit, beshou and meron. I even got to meet Rahwi, Nahom, Hewe, and Ethio Jazz from the press. It’s quite amazing standing face to face with people who for the longest time were nicks on the other end of a computer screen.
If ever there was a “best booth” award at the games, you guys own it! Very elegant!! Says a lot about how simplicity with a dash of passion for what one does creates a sizzle. You guys rock!
nolawi… you got to meet masinko ? i bow to your greatness.
this was very funny. but it screams insecurities
hahhahhhahhhha… this is what i really missed, to brust out loughing by such hilarious expressions of Nolawi!
Glad to have u back!
Mayhem, sounds to me like you are the one that the comment touched to close too…
when traffic slow incite the majority/engineers for new content. How much is ‘low-mid level salary’ anyhow? Thats a lot of money, enit?
Not an engineer
ha..ha..ha funny but true!
M’lady, One of the reasons I was given for having missed out a lot by not coming for the soccer tournament ? >> “Masinkomelody was there too!!!” ahhhh, wish I met you! ):
ende Nolawi, leave us alone, you are very funny
It was very nice meeing you Melody…by the way Wud, that’s why you shoulda been here, mooch lots of nice people
Nolawi, you’re not fara, if you were one of the ladies at Kwaas meda wearing high heel in that hot humid dc weather that woulda been a different story (I hope I haven’t offended anyone). Good job Bernosoch!!
A friend in DC promised me a bernos t-shirt.I live in the west coast.
He calls me from the soccer field and said “$25 for a
t-shirt????”
I said, “but it says “desta keremela”
He said “I will not buy it!’
So I ended up not getting a t-shirt.
Really was it $25 or is he making it up??
It was a pleasure meeting you guys.
And I agree with Masinko,
he is lying completely…
Hi bernos folks,
It was nice to meet Meron and Nolawi – I almost pass by without saying anything, but when I saw Meron outside with the Bernos flag, I couldn’t resist.
Thanks for the hug, Meron, it was worth the trip to DC.
yeah I went to the field just for one day and I saw Bernos T-shirts everywhere. Good sells-man/woman-ship and booth was off the hook too. and I got a video clip of Nolawi and Dawit doing their thing. I will upload/send it u as soon as I can.
yuppy or not, Engineers are the backbones of society. Engineers provide everything u take for granted but can’t live without. so give em a brake man.
Thanks Nolawi
I knew it! I went back to see the price on the web and it was not $25. it did not make any sense to me unless demand was high and the price went up…
Well
It’s ok… i will get it myself
It was great meeting everyone! Bernos was fully represented at the stadium. Much obliged for the overwhelming love and support from you guys!!
beTam nolawi
*types away on TI-83 calculator*
I saw Beshou, Nolawi, Meron from a distance and I said to myself ” Enante yematayugn ene yemayachehu…” Sayachew endale asferugn
I met Dawit though… he was the only one in the booth when I went twice to buy bernos t-shirts…
Hi Nolawi,
You know, I do really like what you write almost all the time. It is easier for me to simply guess that you are one of the “mood yalachew” guys to spent time with. I just can’t comment on all the things you said that I agree with, I would rather point few things that I don’t get or disagree with. So, here we go…
I don’t really get what you meant by 700 unique visitors per day. Did you mean new? I mean everybody is unique…
Hey, about that girl you met four years ago at Aster’s concert…dude, sorry to say this but it seems you are “gura eyenezahe”. You spent like three paragraphs about her and you acted as if…you know
Sup? The yuppie engineers…i have never expected such a comment from you. I believe you are too smart for such kinds of comments. There are many people, regardless of their profession, who believe no one knows anything about a shit but them…it is not only the yuppie engineers you’ve met. About the salary…actually, it is not low-mid level compared with all professions. In general, you are most probably below “the middle income” range if you are employed; I guess if you get 100K…you are middle income in the states. If you are an experienced yuppie/non-yuppie engineer, you will probably get more than 100k. Funny, almost all the engineers I know…were the smart “A” grade students at high school…they are not dudes just trained to use calculators; they are people with brain in their heads.
TOO bad I missed it. But still got my T shirts. My brother got them for me and he even met Meron ( a great sales woman he says) and Dawit. I actualy think he looks a lot like Dawit….they can actualy pass for brothers, do you remember such a guy Meron.
Wudiye, i was asking Hewe about you actually. Really wanted to meet you. Learned what your real name is – love it…it’s one of my favs
i just noticed that meron and I are the only ones smiling. what’s up with the poker faces guys? tsk tsk tsk.
unique visitors per day means 700 different people come to bernos everyday… everyone is unique for the 24 hour period… if the same person comes again and again on that same day i am not counting it… that is called page loads/view per day… which means people visit different pages but the unique doesn’t count it…
hey its not like i know i am going to write about her when i started this article… i just flow – free associate most of the time.. like this time… i just write in one sitting till i think i finish its done.. sometimes i go back and edit most of the time i just post it… and edit major..grammatical errors… most of the time i miss a lot of them…. when i have time i write – edit and then reedit.. those turn out to be good post.. other time – what I say is just bs… not gura menzate persay but tset beloo menzazate about everything…
whatever on the engineers… why do people assume people who gate good grades are smart… they are mostly responsible….
i like orginal thinkers… artist musicians philisophers psychologist, archaeologist, historians, curators, mba’s etc are the smarter generally
than engineers and doctors.. they are just technically trained…
in my dictionary feeling responsible over the task at hand is sometimes called smartness…
soooooooooooooooo true!!!!
Wow what a reunion you guys had. I hope you’ll post more photo’s. Nice to see most everyone is still around.
I came to reorder some t-shirts and I hope and hope the “I dream in Amaringa” will be back in stock.
Some engineer must’ve pissed you off or did you just pick on them because they make up a large percent of the community? hehehe
How are historians original thinkers? It’s not like they thunk up history. LOL.
the yuppie Engineers, i hope this don’t force you to hurl yourselves into oncoming traffic or poke your eyes out with a spork!?…….tew chalew hode malet new….
If MBAs are smart, its because they are so technically trained, much less finer than engineers. In fact we borrow most of our formulas from them. The famous, intimidating, noble prize winning black-shole option formula is what engineers call heat equation, a partial differential equation they can calculate in their sleep. I find engineers much more original than MBAs, and I know them both. Yuppy is any person who is young, urbane, and professional, right? the only difference is in fara or not fara…:)
I love reading the blog and writing on my own. It is funny how you develop an invisible following of people you don’t know who feel that they know you so intimately. Was really expecting the whole name thing.
By the way I also like seeing the comments by Wudenesh seemingly one of your most faithful readers. Wudenesh what is the meaning of your name?
see this is the thing about you guys.. you question every comment… i was just making differentiations between careers not really making a scientific point…. very engineer like..
historians analyze data – from different perspectives…
for an engineer the height of an building doesn’t change with view point.. its constant…
but an architect builds a model of the building isometrically.. and then draws it from different angles.. and uses of perspective to show how the farthest point away from the view point will appear smaller…thus takes that in to considerations… much like the columns of the parthinon
Business people are much more dynamic than engineers… any business model any mba looks at a rule as a guide.. not a strict law…. endewume breaking a rule is a good marketing strategy.. minamin… in business there are many variables… thrown at you daily.. and the mba or business owner has to deal with it..
dynamic thinkers are original thinkers… engineers are just technically trained..
“I am tired of engineers with low-mid level salaries”. What’s this engineers bashing coming from? Engineers on what? Be specific. I hope you’re not dumped by a female engineer. Just kidding.
Hi Nol,
Ok, how about not commenting if you don’t need to be questioned?
Ok, Historians don’t analyze data. If so, go ahead and analyze this as a historian…”abebe be 1990 ke almaz menta lij welede”. It will be so funny to think that a historian, with PHD, like after two thousand years from now will lecture his students this same shit… “abebe be 1990 ke Almaz menta lij welede”…what an original thinker. Hey, forget about its originality…there is nothing to think in the first place.
Well, Architects…they do know engineering. Actually, they take engineering courses. You can’t just do a single architectural design with out considering the engineering part; the building you design should be structurally feasible…you can’t just draw a fancy building like your “artist” buddies. By the way, most of your original tinkers artists…are so funny; they will paint some kind of “ ytedefa kelem” thing and ask you to find something out of it. What the hell! How am I supposed to find something from his work if he doesn’t know what he did in the first place?
By the way, the height of a building will never change …you don’t have to be an original thinker to see the height of a building change, you only need to be dumb, crazy, or drunk or…
ha now i know mamo you are just pissed— you are an engineer aren’t you…
historians see data from many different perspective… a german soldier sees wwII differently from an American…
It’s always so nice to finally get a chance to meet you guys from afar in person whom I feel I’ve known thanks to the internet for a while. What can I say! Thank you all for your love and support.
Like Ababiru and Mariye , I couldn’t bring my self to say hi first . First time I saw the bernos booth , Nolawi was wearing a costume and Meron was with him dancing or something, they were laughing they looked sooo cute …. I smiled and passed by. no one paid attention to me . then later on I run in to Nolawi and then I said I have to say hi and explain who I was . He was a very warm and friendly guy– gave me a big hug and a kiss on the gunch! Go Bernos !
Come on Nolawi. Don’t speak down of what u not know bro. There is no field of study that is more creative and as imaginative all while being relevant to reality than Engineering. Again, every thing u take for granted, everything u enjoy right now can be directly or indirectly attribute to engineers. As u read this shit, it is engineers who imagined the internet and the computer that u are using to put them down with. Your profession wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for engineers. It is the creativity of the software engineers that designed photoshop etc that allows your creativity. (Click on “Help” and then “About Photoshop” to see the list of their names). It is engineers who design the machines that threads and then prints the graphic on Bernos t-shirts. I mean, I can go on and on.
On the other hand, art has its purpose but it relevance to our existence is quite minimal. Basically u can’t live the life u live right now without engineers, while u can almost certainly exist without artists. Occasionally art could be educational but in general it is a luxury that is either a bourgeois exercise in the realm of the irrational or it is a means to propagandize something all in the entertainment or some phony aesthetic appreciation. Other than that, its usefulness is negligible.
But artists are relatively harmless compared to MBAs. Speaking of MBA, MBA programs and ppl with MBA degrees are pretty much peddlers of a corrupt ideology that, as we speak, is fucking up this country and the world. But I concede that MBA are the sheep herders of Engineers only because engineers are too busy figuring things out to have time to go out to bullshit and hustle the system. BTW Bush is an MBA.
Nyalasmoke,
After I saw the Alamata -Dessie road some engineer did (I was told during the Italians) I bow to human imagination and creativity. The guy should have been not only creative but crazy as well.
On the other hand ,looking down on PPl is what most habeshas I come across do. Especially when they think they have achived something.
I do not agree with the fact that ppl can live with out Art. I will have to ask the definition of ´to live´?
Bush an MBA ? ..Of what ?..lol…
low blow
LOL nyala LOL!
loving the rant.
Spacefog… hahah yeah I said u can live without artists and not Art per say. Meaning, u can get rid of the artists and the art will happen by itself, everyone is an artist after all. But get rid of the engineer then how you gona get from Kobolcha to Desse
Now, that road is a work of art
yeah mister, Bush and so is the former CEO of Eron, ppl who run Baer stern, Indymac etc etc… I tell u, MBAs are the harbingers of armageddon.
are you kidding me Nyala – mba’s vs engineers…
i don’t want to discuss this with you because you will probably argue this laterally…only…
You as an engineer will always work for an MBA not the other way around…. when you venture out on your own come back and prove me wrong… case closed….
Nolawi ma man… what u say is absolutely true and I have conceded that unfortunate circumstance in my previous post. But the case is far from closed. Just because MBAs are superiors in the corporate structure that doesn’t make them either smart or useful beyond maximizing profit to the company. MBAs and engineers being both employees, allow me to make parallels with the corporate structure of the “employees” of the slave system. The engineers are of course the ppl who do all the hard work are equivalent to the field negros, while the MBAs with their overblown salary and special benefits are equivalent to the cushy house nigros. The house nigros are substantially better of than the field nigros not because they are smarter or stronger rather they are afforded better conditions because they are loyal and unabashedly serve their masters with any means necessary.
If only two or three bridges collapse in this city ,time and life as we know it would come to a stand still, why pigeon-hole engineers as not deep thinkers?, people can be multifaceted can they not?..deep thinking come in all forms and all subjects I think, I know two artist who started as stage and sound engineers, now they make sculptures and it is called kinetic art and they are as much a work of art, as they are engineering at its best …anyway let the engineers get the bashing, lol… mostly it is my profession that folk dislike very much and estate agents..can anyone imagine the horror that it is to be put on the same hate bracket as estate agents?, everyone hates them here…
Just beacuse you copy some graphics and consolidated two diffrent culture (Yours and the US) and put it on a a T-shirt does not make you an Artist big head!!! stop bashing the diffrent professions… to each its own… when someone feels threatned they feel the need to make others look small and bad mouth them. Is that what you are doing mr I know it all??
Menew engineeroch mistehen serekuh ende? or are they making more than you are from mechebchebing Tshirts? cool it down nols…
Why is nolawi’s opinion so important that you come to his blog read it and make a comment that you had to insult him personally… you kool it down. fara
Don’t you get it ?! Nolawi likes provoking ideas and topics. The more daring and provoking the topic , the more we’ll be interested in giving our opinions . We rant and rave , defend and support ideas and bring perspectives. no need to think and take it personally . I say his arrogance adds more flavor to the blog .
BTW I too think most engineers are smart and creative. I am kind of irritated by those artists and philosopher tebiyewoch, all immersed in counter culture thing , who do nothing but just think they are cool and unique for standing against any conventional thing or wisdom doing nothing or for creating a crap they call ” art ” and “creative work” . Not contributing to their community or family. Not even helping themselves. Now don’t get me started on that .
LOL please learn few things from nyalasmoke…admito mekeraker hasabun new….stop attacking the person
gegema neger neh…..
nyalasmoke,
if you read “cadillac desert” you would realize engineers have also been less than brilliant on a totally huge scale for most of the last century. Unfortunately, every field in my view is saddled with talented but longterm/depth perception deficient morons who can’t look critically at the overall consequences of their actions.
Since most comments are pro-engineer worship, i’m with nolawi in yelling “overrated” at those who we applaud for resolving problems they most likely helped to create (hello gas prices, plastic surgery addiction) Maybe I’m mad cos calculus wasn’t kind to me, but also because i’m realizing the only people who deserve any special recognition are those that can provide visionary leadership so that the work of our reckless engineers (and perhaps over critical writers) doesn’t go unchecked and wipe us out of creation. I’ll let y’all figure out who these rare individuals are.
–Hidaya=====> paralegal/lawyer? I won’t judge you sis.
Oh no datdude stop trying to get me hated:), my friend and I have have a technique for all that, when folk are trying to shred us to pieces, to divert attention away from us we quickly mention the politicians, the journalist, the accountants, the bank managers the bureocrats and of course the lowest of the low, the estate agent, no winning when pitted agaisnt the doctors, here fol beleive doctors are modern day Gods, even I am not immune to their charm and devotion to their jobs though I really must for when they err…lol..it is a working technique when pitted agaisnt that lot, the strange thing is all the professions in that list are not only disliked but thought of it as untrustworthy too, in mine we are still trusted, hell will freeze over before any liking takes place though..lol …
lol me neither, do you now that they dont even teach it in school here, do they teach it in the US datdude?…
Tree huggers?:) but seriously though teachers are my favourite people in the world, the good ones that is..I have a sneaking admiration for engineers, they have spatial skills I would have liked to have….
Nolawi what is with the engineers hateration…………..
ok, I am lost, I dont know what is considered smart/original by the bernos crowd. Nyala, you got to give it to the Enron guys, they were smart, Nolawi smart, imaginative capitalism, entrepreneurial, much more than you can say about W. It takes cunning smart to sucessfully decieve and mislead for such a long time. I see where you are coming from as well as Nolawi, and do think Nolawi’s criticism is unfair when he implies entrepeneurial is smart. No, that is just dogged determinism, persistence after several failures and trial and errors.
LOL I think you are the one who feels threatened, qinat alebish messel, OBVIOUSLY!
Datdude
haha. Yeah man, I am yet to read “cadillac desert”… hopefully I will one day. anyways,I still stand by my claim that engineers are more creative and useful than say artists of MBAs. Unfortunately u have just managed to expanded the frame of the discussion beyond its original scope. So yes, when u look at it from that perspective, I have to agree with you and Nolawi. Engineers can be characterized as too myopic and too mechanical to see the overall picture. It is why MBAs are hired to herd them like sheep. Yes there are probably more engineers indifferently working to destroy the planet than there are ones that are actively trying to save it. But I still have more hope in the cogs/engineers who one day will untangle themselves from the machinery and give us solutions that matter to the common good. But I can’t say the same for MBAs, lawyers or artists. Ok maybe artists shouldn’t be on the list. They can be catalysts of change in some roundabout way. MBAs are ideological so they are pretty much hopeless , engineers on the other hand, just like they are herded to do “the man’s” job, they can be herded to do ze ppl’s job.
Damn that Calculus class or u would have been on our side
I am telling you, we will all be in awe of Engineers if we saw how much thought and detail goes into even a simple structure. Engineering is beautiful, man! It is going to gaing even more relevance as we have to use less resources to provide for more.

Anonx, yeah man it is getting confusing. Now that is clearly a problem. What is an engineer/mba/artist/lawyer/marketer to do?
Problem
our definition of things such as smart, creative, successful etc seem not to jive with each other
Solutions
The MBA … make up a definition and send a memo to everyone noting that this structural edict was necessary to guarantee a stream lined approach to dominate the market place
The artist… all the variations are unique and uses them depending on his mood, they express the inexpressible he would say, and will suggest pondering over some good chiba to get them creativity juices flowing
lawyer… files a motion to further obfuscate the situation but will find a loophole that allows for a definition favorable to his client.
the marketer…. all definition appeal to various niche markets and therefore are useful in pimping ppl
and of course the heroic engineer descends from the sky… probably in an elevator he built would say…. have a precise and common definition of the various adjectives and your problems will be solved.
Well, in my opinion…comparing MBAs with Engineers is like comparing a driver with an engineer who designs the car’s engine. Well, busy engineer my need to hire a driver…but he still can drive. These kinds of fields like Management, Business, Marketing…are somehow easy to understand as every human being knows most of the concepts by common sense. Have you ever taken a management course? It is like repeating, with different wordings, some thing that everybody knows by common sense
Ok, Nol…I don’t really get the idea that engineers working for an MBA…may be the MBA due has undergrad degree in technical field. Otherwise, There are Technical Managers, who manage the technical people and the technical work.
Easy example, an engineer can be a great manager too but some dude with Management degree will never ever be even a dumb engineer…it doesn’t work that way. It is like asking that driver with driving skills only to design a car engine.
By the way Nol, something just comes to my mind…about the height of the building that changes by view point for non-engineer folks. Even animals don’t think that way; the height of an object will never change…unless there is some kind of growth or…Let me give you an example, if a zebra sees a lion like 200 feet away, she knows the Lion looks smaller but it is still a Lion…fact is fact even for animals!
To add fuel to the fire I think creativity is more part of your personality than your profession…Music is considered one of the most creative professions but I know a lot of trained musicians who are not creative at all….they read notes and play brilliant pieces created by others….I guess every profession has creative and
not-so-creative members.
But I kind of see Nol’s connection between engineers and arrogance….for wateva reason we have too many abesha engineers….and a lot of them r stuck at sort of semi professional level….that is a recipe for arrogance….
Mamo,
This is a typical habesha mentality. Living be gimit(common sense )and not recognizing the need for professionalism. That is why we remain poor ,we focus too much on physical sciences. I do not think Engineers (physical scientists)built the US or the West. These are things that came after ,you need a good social ground to do anything.
fantastic points dinicho!
I completely agree with that…every field – art, music, law, medicine, marketing, anthropology, archeology, history, engineering have their creative side and their more ‘technician’ side! most base their creativity on previous works. creativity is not a measure for ‘smarts’ tho…cos smarts are optimal depending on the use of these smarts, and the situation in which they are necessary.
Dinich that is true for musicians who dont create their own work, but even the ones who play other people’s compositions have their own creative interpretation of the work of others, it is as same as actors I think, some believe they are artists, others think they are performers whose words and script are written by others and therefore not strictly artists or,I think their art is in their performances and what they do with those words.
Nyalasmoke – I love your arguments for all the engineers out there!! Go bro!!
As an engineer I take offense to this thread. I can take the discussions about who is creative/which profession is more creative etc… all w/n bounds (I think). However, WTF is “semi professional level“??? Cut this BS + ignorance. Either, one is a professional engineer or not. This is not the NBA. There is no D-League here. Perhaps you are talking about the cabbie w/ an EE degree? Somehow I doubt that…
I’m inspired to invent a method to produce a genetically modified starch to replace the ignorant Idaho potato that goes by the name Dinich (a recipe for idiocy).
Nolawi - You may very well have a point but you could have stated your arguments in a non-dismissive manner. Come now, you of all people should be more creative than that
Refer to Nyalasmoke’s posts for some guidance/examples. BTW when you went to Art School, was that training or education? Are you now a PhotoShop chu’lo or maybe a digital ku’li??? The irony is w/o me, you have no tools to “create“. Even this very medium – Bernos, is not possible.
Nyalasmoke - spoken like a true engineer!!! Bravo! Now that is an EDUCATED MIND – not a trained one.
It always surprises me when people think because they got an A+ (in any course for that matter not only Calc) they are smart. For me it means you grasped the course material very well and you worked your ass off. That is all!
I think what Noalwi is trying to say (as to my understanding) is they are not people’s person. I don’t want to generalize, but I agree to that. There are some engineers who are not sociable, and if they are they present themselves as if they know everything. That might be annoying at times.
But, it is not because they are engineers. They lack social skill. Period! Most of their work doesn’t require them to communicate with people. If they do, it is mostly technical.
What I am saying is social skill is what you gain by life experience; not grade. Technical skill and social skill are two completely different things as far as I am concerned. Of course you can use your technical skill to socialize, but should be done with the same crowd. Engineers with engineers; accountant with an accountant.
Definition: cre·a·tive (kr-tv) adj.
1. Having the ability or power to create: Human beings are creative animals.
2. Productive; creating.
3. Characterized by originality and expressiveness; imaginative
A creative person produces works/things that have never been done before – ORIGINALITY! Ergo, instances of creativity will have to include discoveries of new knowledge i.e. the 1st person who put 1s & 0s together to invent the computer was original i.e creative.
Now that I have clarified the scope, you can start the discussion on how habesha engineers are arrogant/stupid etc… Now that is a subjective argument. However, as far as creativity – there is no valid point all you artist can make to counter a FACT. BTW just as an engineer can be arrogant b/c a character flaw/deficiency so can an habesha Artist – Nol take note
brother/sister proudAbeshaEngineer, keep us proud by refraining from personal attacks bro/sis. We dont need to re-engineer our brother from Idaho for he made a pretty accurate point. A lot of ppl in our profession, may have degrees in engineering and may even have fancy sounding professional titles but lets face it, their duties might not go further than summing tables on excel sheets. hmmm or some of us might not be chit chatting on web forums and blogs instead of doing ours jobs… ahem ahem…
but I like the passion of all the engineers here supporting their profession.
Engineers United will never be divided…rather we will be, added, multiplied, squared!
Once again I re-submit the Q: WTF is “semi professional level“ Engineer??? Argue char all you want but there is no such thing as a semi-pro-engr. The fact one has a lofty tittle for generating charts doesn’t make him/her an engineer. So you either are a professional engineer or not. I see no valid or accurate point here…
I’m still trying to invent that starch. At the very least, I want a frying pan… :0
shinkurt likewise everything u said I can give u an artist who fits the same description making proudAbeshaEngr’s point that this discussion is completely subjective.

I think it is just semantics but lets see what Dinicho means by it.
and sometimes nature is the best engineer.
hahah Hidaya, yoo I like lawyers, at least some of them… It might take fire to fight fire. Besides, the artists often make perfect movie character out of them for the rest of us to enjoy.
Perhaps but I didn’t like the dismissive tone.
BTW I love the last line Smokin’ Darwin…
Lol,Nyala we dont like each other much either, especially tax lawyers no one likes those, criminal lawyers provoke strong feelings and everyone with a conscience amongst lawyers hates corporate and divorice lawyers, everyone respect human rights lawyers, so see we hate each other too…
Yeah, the character written about American lawyers are caricature-ish, here it is a different kind of caricature and more formal there is still slightly more mystique to lawyers since we have no cameras to perform to in court, and thank God for that, also many lawyers and law students even before they fisnish their degrees want to become writers or actors, can you beleive that?…thank God for dram writers though, generally law is practical, slow and boring, it is drama writers that mae it look exciting on tv, that is why we eventually escape to some form of writing if not drama…

This post cracks me up. I am both an Engineer and an MBA…where do I fit then?
As an engineer, I am able to plan, design, create, and produce. And as an MBA, put all that together and present, deliver, market, etc…
Like someone on the post mentioned, it’s about the person’s ability to use their creative minds in whatever field/profession they are in.
Enough Said.
nyalasmoke,you may be right….
“But I still have more hope in the cogs/engineers who one day will untangle themselves from the machinery and give us solutions that matter to the common good”
but I think–
spacefrog is more right
” I do not think Engineers (physical scientists)built the US or the West. These are things that came after ,you need a good social ground to do anything.”
When I examine the past, the best in human history happens as a result of preliminary work of political leaders, who make it possible for the various human expressions to flourish, like arts and science. Those who flourish in this position excel in imposing balance to the competing ambitions of the members of society. It is also rare to find an individual who functions satisfactorily in this role.
hidaya,
). Suddenly the “Devil’s Advocate” comes to mind. lol
they do still teach calc in school, at least when I was going, unfortunately I couldn’t afford a good lawyer to help me contest certain Fs on my midterms. Maybe you can take up my case, in which we argue that the correct/incorrect solution to a question involving imaginary numbers should not in any way affect a pupils grade (unless positively
And I thought only students here sued their old schools and Unis:) I am gonna get to it too soon, in several countries and all which make it a bit tricky….
Yeah we could sue your old school, not suing individual nuns datdude we might lose and then go to hell , not a good outcome all round lol, and I should make you aware that it might happen in case you sue me for not making you aware of the possibility ,then got to find a legal way to make a sound argument about the correct/incorrect solution to the question and the grade that should have been not the grade obtained, lol, and if it ever happened before which will be our only hope of winning, then the different jurisdiction issues which we just wont find any sound argument to get round it legal or otherwise, devil’s advocate?, pray we are not thrown out of court after a long winded lecture from a bad tempered judge and branded vixatious litigants on the way out..lol…
Hello everyone.
Yesterday, a friend of mine came to my home “actually it is not my house, it is a rent” and we had a conversation about the Ethiopians social websites we had right now. I was seriously looking for one on which I could surf a lot of information and build a tunnel of knowledge flows with different bloggers, readers, folks of different background. Then he point me to Bernos and I got a chance to read about this article, which actually inspired me a lot and finnaly get the potential to say something about my opinion.
All part of the article is very sensible and but my eyes were keeping on rollin’ and rollin’ to the last paragraph. It was almost a glare on the paragraph.
ehhhhhmmmmmmm…
Duh, U gave me a hard time of figuring out where ur thinking of the Ingineers could came from. And finally I concluded that the thinking could arose from either one of the “kolasha” Ing u knew, might be one of ur friends with the russian degree or it is from the discipline itself, which u can’t help it. In addition to that u tried to compare with the online degrees of MBA, Psychology, Geogrphy, Hisoty, Nuro zede, Ejesira, Ersha, whatever. Eng. Mamo put the comparison very well. I think I don’t have more to say on this. Anyways I gave you the thumb up for ur article. I hope I will be caffeined to ur site, atleast once a day.
who’s the cutie on the far right?
Ok Nolawi, now I am beginning to see what you mean about some habesha engineers. Some here have a cast system in their head where engineers are second to non.
Let me add a second fuel to the fire to increase the hateration one notch more: according to some well placed individuals, third world engineers are more prone to become terrorists. They have data to back it up; was well publicised. The conclusion…engineers as displayed here have an anger trigger and love to distroy what they build and even invent to destroy what they didn’t build.
Save your correlation does not necessary reveal causation.. blah blah. engineers are terrorists
Engineers should be herded otherwise the flock will go ashtray and there is no knowing what some member will do, god knows, they are capable of blowing up not unlike the unibomber or some well known others.
You might be an engineer if . . .
. . . you have no life and can prove it mathematically.
. . . when you look in the mirror, you see an engineering major.
. . . you know how to integrate a chicken and can take the derivative of water.
. . . you’ve calculated that the World Series actually diverges.
. . . you hesitate to look at something because you don’t want to break down its wave function.
. . . you can’t remember what’s behind the door in the science building which says “Exit.”
. . . you have to bring a jacket with you, in the middle of summer, because there’s a wind-chill factor in the lab.
. . . you avoid doing anything because you don’t want to contribute to the eventual heat-death of the universe.
. . . you consider any non-science course “easy.”
. . when your professor asks you where your homework is, you claim to have accidentally determined its momentum so precisely, that according to Heisenberg it could be anywhere in the universe.
. . . the “fun” center of your brain has deteriorated from lack of use.
. . . you’ll assume that a “horse” is a “sphere” in order to make the math easier.
. . . you make a hard copy of this list and post it on your office door.
. . . you know the glass is neither half full nor half empty; it’s simply twice as big as it needs to be.
i wanna say hi to the gurage girl on the picture. how u doin ? business?….i forgot the dude from swden also….hur mar du ? allt ar bra ? you have a nice product ….i like it ….keep on the goog job
beckymood,
Livet ar bra fran den har sidan of Atlanten. Allt bra med dig sjalv och vart i Sverige bor du?

With all your thinkings about engineering, I don’t think you guys are capable of understanding the theory of relativity or some of these like:-
-Time dilation: Moving clocks are measured to tick more slowly than an observer’s “stationary” clock.
-Length contraction: Objects are measured to be shortened in the direction that they are moving with respect to the observer.
you can’t even imagine what would happen to your view of the world if you could travel very fast.
BTW, there is also an engineering in economics too; relaxed?
am I a pain in ur a**?
Happy Friday!
hidaya,
.
you are right, maybe we should rethink suing the nuns, unless nyalasmoke can ‘engineer’ an escape from hell itself…hehe i couldn’t resist.
Mamo
Don’t be dumb, and most of all don’t drink and drive…
call a Taxi or walk!
Aba, Kes, Pastor, Shek,…whatever Witness
Are you drunk? What are you talking about? There is nothing in my comment that says drink and drive.
Mamo
The “witness” guy doesn’t like u. He is like “Fiyel wedih kizimzim wedya”, implies he doesn’t have a clue about “Mehandis”. I gave him a “Kolasha” rank to all his wrongs.
Mamo, are u one of the yuppie Ing? hey hey.. u are a smart guy.
I was hoping to hear about the parties and the hookups during the tournament.
But this discussion ended up being about who is smarter than whom. We are African’s wouldn’t be in this mess if we at least try to see the bigger picture. All professions must be respected, we need Doctors as much as we need Engieneers, accountants, politicians, historians, artists, architects. So stop the B/S we are Africans living in the west yet our people live in the most unimaginable poverty. So you all better stop pretending to be somebody just because you have a degree in the west and work for corporate America.

Returning friendly fire to Nyala for the harbinger of armageddon thingy… True to my nature I will redefine it for the cause of ‘market domination’. : I think the true harbinger of armagedeon is the herd, the engineer, not the herder. If you allow me to herd you, I will, if I don’t someone else will… it’s one consistent theme in history. The difference between then and now, the Indian, indentured servitude and slavery open season is over and with it the claim to injured innocence. None of us offered an education has a right to claim of innocence. If you ask me, more than W, the MBA, it’s the herd that put him in office not once but twice that has a stronger claim to the harbinger of Armageddon label. In this age where we live now, buying into ‘manufactured consensus’ puts the blame on you, no one else.
And I think engineers make for bad leaders too. ? Given power, they tend to be authoritarian—Napoleon, the big, I think was an engineer or doctor. They always know what’s best for the masses like M&I, Meles and Issayas. Not to say MBAs are better, more than ideological, I think they are near sighted.
Kukusha, you are not a pain in the … you know… but I can’t figure out whether my humor failed, or you are just an engineer.
And I guess a ‘semi-professional’ engineer is one without art. Cause the artist comes before the engineer, it’s the art that give vision, broadly speaking its the art that causes dreams and make an engineer, the real engineering is translation of the art.
Datdude, hi,…
Lol, or find a legal technicality ie get out of hell card:) , lawyers and the devil..we go a long way and have history..the devil has form in addition, we cant,lol..now it is me who couldn’t resist a dig at my own expense…, not smart at all:)..if nothing else works we can consult the harbingers of armageddon when it is unanimously decided who that lot is:) if they can bring armageddon around, then can find a way to get us out of hell, win our case which frankly would be impossible normally,…
Personally I think London stock exchange and New York traders and CEO’s and their corporate lawyers else are the harbingers of armageddon. When armageddon comes I know who to point my finger at…
“…he just wrote a major article on a popular magazine which he showed me, about Ethiopian Jazz. He is currently a freelance writer with a small local magazine in South Dakota.”
First off; I’m loving this site. Secondly how is it that you meet Ethiopians from South Dakota and South Carolina. I lived in the latter for 4 yrs and didn’t meet one. Now i live in S. Dakota and i thought i was the only one. Anyway keep it up. Anbess out
hidaya,
(still couldn’t resist, but i’ll stop). Suddenly Dante’s Divine Comedy comes to mind.
i’m noticing that I should make my peace with the almighty and not risk eternal doom, because a backup plan involving lawyers (and/or satan and/or harbingers of armageddon and/or nyalasmoke’s stupendous engineering abilities) will likely involve so many fees that i’ll either end up broke/enslaved trying to pay you lot off or get thrown back into the fiery furnace for delinquency.lol
If we were to make a list of harbingers of armagedon it is very likely that every human being is eligible for that list, especially with the help of inspired lawyers
Hi datdude…
True in theory, but unbeknown to anyone lawyers are sometimes angel-ish in their work, dont laugh, it is true lol ..if we believe in your cause you pay nothing, if an extreme wrong needs to to be put right some will take it on even if your case drags on for years and costs a lot,all the better of course if your case/cause, then becomes the cause celebre issue of the day lol.. of course it goes without saying that if the case is won it is not just you who wins but also the name of the law firm who has done the work otherwise the place might go broke after all that taking on conscience prickling cases and might need more paying clients to balance the sheets,..lol…
True, some more eligible than others though as in all things…
Datdude this might seem unlikely of lawyers lol,but mostly we keep the peace, the things that clients wants to do to each other when angry and think they can through their lawyers is the stuff of major nightmares, mostly borderline criminal too, got to stop them in their tracks and tell them the retribution stuff they are wanting is not very lawyerly work-like and that they might need the assistance of others who don’t have to work under the restraint of the law, as for inspiration uhmm lawyers at work are only allowed to be inspired by the finer points of the law to their clients, sometimes clients just want to go nuclear? what is a poor lawyer to do in these circumstances:)?..it goes like this lol…
1.metaphorically and even not, hold client’s hand for reassurance that all will be well and hope that it will be 2.advising them against any loose cannon exhibition of doolaly behaviour in public in case it hurts their case, build a strong case and do the very best for their client working under laws politician made and judges interpreted, 3.then, when it is all over go home and wonder how you ended up in a profession that at school taught you it was about fairness and justice and accountability which are fine ideals to uphold and to work with yet ended up knowing less of that and more about human hate and the so many different ways people fail each other’s duties and responsabilities towards one another, Dante’s Inferno’s just about right until an escape beckons..lol…
100!
hidaya very view altering comment,
)
this has to be the most complete rendition of a lawyers life, i’ve ever read. (at least in the space of three paragraphs) You’ve inspired me, just the other day I was arguing with a friend that people are basically NOT good, and need to be shaped and molded. Your experience shows that there is still room for the wonderful nuns, to help in churning out responsible citizens that won’t sell their services/talents to the highest bidder no matter how devious. Of course less business for you then, but the reward in societal growth is worth it right? (psst the answer is yes
Maybe the most important thing i’ve learned in all this is the critical role we all play. I know that sounds cliche but doro mata posting 100, on the hundredth comment has cosmic ramification. Its impact as we speak is reverberating through the known/ and unknown universe. hold on to your seats folks.
Hi datdude…
Thank you, that is sweet:) are people generally not good? I dont know, I think goodness and badness in people sometimes can be found in the same proximity but one thing that civil law opens one’s yes too are the fact that people even good people sometimes, many sometimes are neglectful of their duties towards others, it is not always thru malice, sometimes it is thru recklessness or neglect or ignorance or malpractise…
Then there are those who knowingly will seek every danger and thrill and then sue others if they are not saved from themselves and want restitution…for what you wonder? foolishness and not taking personal responsabilty towards ones’ own safety and welfare?
Then people dont want to take accountability when the consequences of their action or , lack of them whichever is relevant takes them to court, and that is before you get to the murder and family law stuff, there? people, clients, cases implode, not good dadude, not good at all …
Yeah the wonderful nuns can all emigrate here, this city needs them, especially our knives yeilding young, while they are it teaching them to aim for something other than career criminalism they could also teach them to be less self involved and about vocations and altruism , I fear the nuns have a mammoth task on their hands maybe?…datdude, does that make the answer yes?:)…
datdude, holding on what time is take off?:)..
wow lots of amazing posts! Anonx, Datdude, Hadiye, yeah I have learned from y’all that we all got positive roles to play. Maybe except for some numerically inclined cosmic psychics, everyone is necessary in someway.:) We have to keep each other responsible.
It is so great to see how sensitive Engeeners are.
Thank you Nyala that is really sweet, .
I have been following your exchanges with Anonx and Datdude from American mainstream politics ,Ralph Nader to to climate change and others and I have learnt a lot I didn’t know about it< Anonx helped me with American politics, thank you Anonx, Datdude..
Thank you to Grandma too, though I don’t see her around much, I value her contribution and she makes me laugh plus she gave me valuable advice once, ha Grandma doesn’t know this but I followed her advice to the t and it served me well, so thank you’s are in order Thank you to Bernos too for having hosted and made all this possible…
hidaya,
)so that the maximum amount will grow to become responsible citizens. Of course as you pointed out, majority of problems are good people doing bad things. No silver bullet I guess. Maybe what they really need is a heavy dose of those nuns and some advice from our resident Grandma, whose words of wisdom have apparently received the highest of endorsements.
most welcome. I’ve heard a few londoners complain about growing knife violence. Its weird, I never pictured that place as violent, I guess the image I had was courtesy and Queen’s english lol…the problem as i see it is not just in the existence of knife wielding youth but in the state’s/society’s inability to deal with it. So more police force is not the only answer, but also developing the individual.
That was the point I was trying to make to my friend, people have to be taught/shaped/molded (plato would be proud
I think its a hung jury Hidaya. Greed or ignorance, like chicken or egg, I can’t make up my mind. But I do feel that if a quarter, not even that high, of our ignorance(trauma) melts, reckless greed wouldn’t have much of a space. My pleasure though for spilling the little that I know. You’re in London like 10 of us here rolled into one… if you and the Dude ever get a chance to appoint Nyala, I hope he appoints me as his lieutenant, his righ hand man, yes sir, sir…. I just pray it wont be like one of those WWII movies that when things go wrong, and they do, time for bitch slapping down the chain of command….
You should team up with Doro Mata too, that haunting and lyrical ‘My name is not mine, I was born when I died’ is a perfect compliment to yours on confusion. I am not comparing the two characters, though, dont get me wrong…
Looks like Obama is thee man. Seems the entire world got a crush on him, unbelievable. At a bar with two brothers early early in the primary, one said if Obama is elected, I will walk butt naked down the street. The other replied, you gonna get your ass locked up, me I’m gonna walk down the street with one pucket of chicken on on hand, and a water mellon on the other. I told my habesha friend the story, and he added, yea a whitewoman besided him too…
Dude, Catcher on the Rye, is like my first gurl. fell in love that way with reading.
Today is my friday, sorry for the excess.
I discover my errors after the fact. And never prevents me from making another in the future. I dont know what pucket is, but I do know bucket.
Hi Datdude….
Queen and courtesy?,oh no datdude is that what the world thinks of England? the rudest, grumpiest most suspicious people all live in London, if anyone smiles at anyone in this city no one assumes it is to be friendly and good natured, instead you start worrying if the smiler might be a pyscho of sort and chose you as a victim and trying to lure you with the smile…so yeah it is that bad…
It is also like the wild west here, knives, guns you name any weapon that kills and maims and they are all here used by the under 16′s the most now, only up to a year ago it was the under 20′s killing each other and everyone else now it is the under 16′s, maybe in another year it will be the under 10′s, the other violent crimes are on the increase too but violence by children is more pressing now, it is only the seventh month of the year and already up to 20 mostly under 16′s and the following age group murdered, this month in one week-end alone three teenagers were killed…
True, most of this crimes are committed by children, the newspapers calls them feral children and some are not far off, they know no kindness or decency and have no values mainly because they have never been taught to have any in their homes, not all of them have full time parents, fathers go off or were never really considered either by their partners or by themselves to become an integral part of their children’s lives, and some parents try but their surroundings and their circumstances might not allow them to succeed in keeping their children away from gangs ready to indoctrinate them into crime, but yes there is the issue of majority of these child killers and victims are mainly black…I ask myself if this would have gotten so bad if it affected another community?, now we are told something will be done..lets see if it happens…, the nuns and dear grandma are most welcome to sort out this mess before we are all knifed sometimes just for fun by feral children….
Hi Anonx….
I just saw Berliners, about 20,000 of them come out for Obama, yeah all are infatuated with Obama if the Germans are coming out in their thousands who is left now?, how come he didn’t come to see us?….
Lol ,mate the brothers dare is the funniest thing I read today, maybe they could be a double act, one letting it all hang out, and the other brother would be all booted and suited with a bucket of chicken in one hand and watermelon in the other, , is the chicken cooked or is it still all feathery and alive..aye what a sight that would be lol, people would be jumping over cars to avoid crashing into them lol…
Awww thanks Anonx come, come, fourth musketeer:) has your name been somped on as well? About the appointing…I only want the one behind the scene sorting out stuff out when things go wrong that is the only time I come out of the woodwork, you can all be leaders on alternate day of the week and I can blame each one of you on your day of the week if you mess up like in the old WWII, do you thin that will work?:)….
I like Doro Mata’s writing style, it is deep and provocative I wish she would write more, and confusion the healthy kind I now feel it is not so bad, to have doubt is as natural as to have certainties and well everyone got them both at some point or another in their lives don’t they? I think:)….
.
Obama is not coming to London because it has been determined ‘the rudest, grumpiest most suspicious people all live in London’, instead he is going to Paris after Berlin. Even they almost lost an opportunity to host him because Merkel was against the idea of having him give speech from the same place JFK stood, some boodsburger bridge or something (see I joined the musketeers…)but supposedly the major of Berlin won because allegedly his motive was stronger, to appear next to the next most powerful man in the world so he can one day replace Merkel… something something like that.
I see u don’t know much about bucket of fried chicken and watermelon… come to America. There’s another friend who want to walk down a main street with his dashiki on,two drummer behind and a lady in front throwing rose pedals. I need to invest into a nice camicorder to capture some crazy actions.
And they got an Obama impersonator in Berlin that looks nothing like him:
http://www.bossip.com/21547/a-breath-of-fresh-air/
The joke is on them: ‘they think we all look alike’
haha, touche` Anonx, we are only rude to pyschos and people we dont like or are afraid of. We like Obama, we will not be rude to him apart from the racist party members who are generally rude to anyone not like them.. mind you they are rude in France too, like proper rude not the general grumpiness here don’t know about the Germans but the French especially Parisians uhmm quite rude them, also they shout, not so much shouting here just rudeness….
The Merkel woman struck again eh?, she doesn’t like the UK either and so po faced….Obama according to our press is on mending of the ways mission to the Germans and French…
Anonx you have buckets full of friend chicken? I am a veggie who eats fish in buckets if I have to:)…your friend sounds like fun, is your friend really planning to go around drummers in tow and the rose lady infront?…for dramatic effect there should be a very colourful headgear matching the dashiki and for some odd reason I am thinking of a very colourful bird on someone’s arm, maybe the rose lady lol…
Incidentally Anonx, if you heard Talula does the hula in Hawaii would you ever think that is what some people call their children?…one poor child was named as such and a court in New Zealand decided that wasn’t on, or a name and removed the unfortunate child from the care of her weird parents so her name could be changed..read on below…,bye now I am off:)…

well done, your butchering of a western name so early in your muskeetering is notable, highly notable

I’m in search of some weight loss diet ideas. you’ve got a wonderful weblog ! really informative.. I’ve been wanting to lose weight for six months, I have used several “drugs” including lipobind – linked, (hope you do not mind). however I believe I have to substantially adjust my daily diet and also get some exercise.
