a real letter 53 Comments

letter

I abhor checking my mailbox because it’s usually bills and credit card applications. The thing we call Posta, is obsolete. People now have cell phones that are text messaging capable.

I also abhor text messages, I don’t return them. If you want to send me a message, send it to me in email or if it’s urgent call me. I never ever receive letters, well maybe never is an exaggeration, but it seems accurate enough; as I perhaps receive less than a handful of real letters annually.

Conceivably I need to explain what a letter in my definition is; it is one that is addressed to me and only me. A real letter is not automated through a database. The seal of the envelope has to get licked by someone’s tongue. Thus a real letter must involve a Miraq.

There are other variables, like a postcard and invitation. Postcards come without envelopes in some cases and thus would not require a saliva process. And an invitation, although is made from a database (list) is considered a real letter. Someone has actually said I will invite Nolawi to this.

Ever since Susan, George Constanza fiancée died from letter licking, I think they made new envelopes that need no saliva input. So some letters don’t need licking, yet they are real.

Today I got my third letter of the year. It was a wedding invitation. I always feel peculiar getting a wedding invitations, because I am not used to them. You see, although I have been to many weddings, I was in actuality never personally invited. Mostly it came from family, as I was too close to receive a personal invitation.

Otherwise it came from a family invite; my mom or sister or cousin would tell me that I need to go to this wedding.

But the older I get the more personal wedding invitations I am receiving. One girl told me that she knows that she is getting old because most of the people that are close to her are married already.

I am an adult now, with friends. Friends prone to get married; friends close enough but not too close to actually send me a personal invite to their special day. A real letter, one that might include Miraq!

Hey Nol.. luv the way u described what a real post/debedabae means… the saliva process what i mean, i wish im @ ur stage this time… still a Rockie.
can wait the till i receive personalized mail.. keep posting.

    You missing something bro… :P

A real letter is only real to me when the letter including the address page on the envelope is handwritten. Yes, handwritten! The Miraq part comes after it.

A choice of an envelope with blue red stripes (that includes exotic stamps) … is a plus.

Otherwise, nothing is real to me. :)

Funny post Nolawi. I agree with you about text messages, I detest them.
As for envelopes, I use those spongy thingies to seal them ever since I got a paper cut licking one. I guess my letters are not of the “real” variety. I do lick the stamp though, that could count, but they have the self-adhesive types now….

  6. 6 Anon

If you are still buying, licking stamps or applying the adhesive kind its means you seat down to pay your bills, haven’t migrated to on-line banking–best thing since slice of bread. Stamps are obsolete.

Men can be thick sometimes. My post has nothing to do with stamps, Anon. I was trying to flirt with the man… do you mind? :P

  10. 10 sosina

Nolawi, you must have stopped sending real debdabe few years ago because no miraq required anymore. stamps are stickers as are envelopes. unless you are using bootleg ones from the corner bodega :)

A real letter for me is a handwritten one… not only on the envelope, E. It starts like: “ye semay ereqetu, ye baher teleqetu, ye meder sefatu… so metaphoric.

Seriously though I prefer to get a letter instead of receiving an email. I give more value to a letter as some efforts is put to it. Time spent to write as well as go to the post office to mail it…

Nolawi never thought to the miraq stuff… come think of it… it’s a plus.

  12. 12 Nolawi

I don’t send debdabe never do. I do have one sealed envelope that I wanted to drop by the mail ena the girl pissed me off… thus I kept it without mailing it.

Its still in my office drawer. I just never threw it away. It was my attempt to be romantic but she happened to be ethiofused. One day I will open it and scan it and post it on bernos.

  13. 13 Mariye

Ooohhhh Nolawi! FeQer be debdabe? That’s cute… is the paper you wrote on filled with red roses :-)

I neither like nor dislike letter writing, I dont know many people who write letters.

The only letters I write are *thank you notes* in a letter form when I need to thank someone for something, and letters never meant to be sent to the person they are written to. I was ok with texting until it almost crippled me, now I hate it because it almost crippled me.

Email can be personalised as much as a letter minus the envelope and the miraq, lol. If the purpose of writing is to express oneself as well as communicate that to someone else then I think email is as good as a letter, it is the self expression, communication and the rapport to the person one is writing to has that is important to me.

My younger brother served 15 months in Iraq. When he left from here, he took his laptop and a blackberry that would allow him to text message from there. While he was in Iraq, we talked on the phone, we emailed, and we exchanged text-messages. Whenever there is a casualty in the Division, the military would shut-down all communication till the family was notified and the only way we knew that he was fine were from his short and sweet “I’m okay” messages. Those were difficult times for my family. But I have to say, I found great pleasure in pouring my heart out to him every time my pen touched a paper to write him a letter. It was very personal, much more intimate than the hundreds of emails and texts we exchanged. For his birthday, and all the major holidays he spent in Iraq, I sent him handwritten letters. We bonded even more because of those letters and I feel that our brotherhood is stronger than ever.

    Nolawi, nice post!

Mariye, I actually do want everything to be handwritten. :) Especially, ende doro ayin tirit yale, siriz-diliz yebezabet yej-tsuf makes my day. I can just see from the paper how carefully the person was trying to write his or her sentences. And the thought process that went into it. ah…i enjoy munchirchir yale too. The pain of going through each sentence and trying to figure out if I have correctly interpreted the message. That is a real letter for me. :P

    Nol,

My big brother tells me in their days if u like a girl, u don’t go talk to her. U borrow her book. When u return it, u put a 5 pager yefiqir debdabe in it.

    Now, that is real letter….

Ya, better give in to text

    Nolawi,
    Nice post.

    E,
Uh? ? Why you sound like those people who finds “art” in every trashy objects, little things, and scream “oh, this’s the coolest art”? Just an observation. I get once in a while from relatives who sends me a hand written letter very munchurchir yale and it’s very annoying reading it.

What ever happened to the “egzaber selamta”? The sad thing is that i never, ever received a letter addressing me just to say hi or asking me how i’m doing. Suddenly, boom! you find a letter from relatives most probably you never met before demanding money (some of the reasons they lay out in the letter could be very funny and clever, though). Usually, i disregard the detail and i jump to find the end to see how much they were asking me. Believe me, in many cases it’s not even easy to find the end because the letter comes with a tiny piece of paper filled with scratchy hand writing from top to the bottom and additional writing in both sides of the page. So, next time, when i recieved that kind of letter, i’ll send you and you’ll let me know the fun part.

  21. 21 Hanna

Never tought of the miraq factor.Nice post.

The issue i have with fikir debdabes is that once you mail them ..with miraq and everything …they are out of your hands…feelings that were valid at the time of writing may no longer be there ….yet the letter/s will serve as a written evidence…..can and may be quoted against you in some future unfortunate date.I may find that uncomfertable. Then again same concern could be raised for emails.Still…MIRAQEAN ANTEFTEFE YATABEKUT BOSTAA has a special place meselegn.

Ye-Inatu-Lej, what a sweet story?! I am glad yr brother made it back okay. that must have been tough time for you guys!

  23. 23 masinkomelody

ohhhh, how nostalgic. Anyone remember the era of “pen-friends”? It used to be so exciting getting letters from kids from just about anywhere in the world. I used to have a small town Swedish pen-pal…mtsss i wonder what happened to her and her cow.

  24. 24 helen

Especially, ende doro ayin tirit yale, siriz-diliz yebezabet yej-tsuf makes my day.

E, I know what you mean. I still have the letters I got from my best friend when I moved here many years ago. They are filled with spelling mistakes and siriz-diliz, five six pages, both sides, of everything and nothing. I keep them with the few love letters and other momentos I have.

  26. 26 Mariye

Masinko, I feel you. Used to have many pen friends from all around the world. The excitement… besmeam! When I think of it now I ask myself: “Men hogne new gen?” Ene ena qulfoch banewadedem (known for loosing any type of key), I made sure to convince ebetochen to give me the key for the post office. Beqa be helme hone be ewne debdabe neber yemasebew. Those were the good old days…. email metana excitementu gedel geba.

Masinko, Betam you took me way back with “pen-pals”. Betam wessagne neger neber eko. U bonded with a person withtout knowing them yet you still learned about their culture.

I love getting and sending real letters. In my opinion the best part about a letter is the joy you feel when you go back to read it (years later) and it takes you down memory lane…I tell you the feeling is PRICELESS.

  28. 28 filetew kuretew

    Nice post
I bet most of us are all familiar with these beginnings of a letter:

Selam yene keentarot. Endemen aleshiligne. Ene yaleanchi hasabena nafkot bestekere betam dehina nege. Anchis indet neshe. MEcehm yanchi neger endiyawu afenchaye lay duke belesh yesew melagecha aderegshigne aydele? ged yelem, meches enesu arbaratu tabotosh tebabrew anchin ende iraq IED lemafendate yabkagne. Eshi. Please don’t hesitate to continue…

you know ive gotten personal letters but they have all been typed, unless it was a postcard or greeting card. I suppose it’d be nice to receive a hand written one…specially a romantic one :)

Grand Ma, I guess with age the joy of going through painful experiences becomes “annoying.” Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So goes it for art as well. I do not limit myself to certain standards when I am in search of a beauty. In my world, trashy objects, little things, screams, munchirchir yalu debdabes, and other enjoyable pains make my life as lively as a blossoming Adey Abeba. :) That is me. And you are you.

Helen, I am glad to know I am not the only one out there. :) I still have, in my collection of handwritten letters, a lub letter from 7th grade with all its siriz-diliz and munchirchir-ism. :P Oh, the innocence of the content of the letter is so remarkable. :)

Wurgatu Lij…ur name is cracking me up. Some people are insanely honest about themselves, I guess. :)

My answer to your question will be:

I think he would definitely ask the queen out for a ‘blind date.’

“Hey Victoriyaye, would you mind coming up to Maqdala and have some fresh air accompanied by some Tej with me?

    E,
    Fair enough.

  33. 33 Totit

The letter AtSe Tewodros wrote to the England Queeen……WAS priceless…I remember it being read on the radio one day…It was soooooooooo daring and sooooo arrogant…I was cracking up and shrinking at the same time…Semuni Newe yakelekute…Wergatu Lej…where did u find the letter…I wouldnt mind reading it one more time…:)
And then a couple of weeks ago I read that Ethiopia sent 1000 Pounds to help England recover from a drought in 1940 …I dont know how much that thousand pounds is worth today…but we had it in us to help the Brits…So I guess we had amazing leaders.
