I get a call this morning from the Voice of America, the radio program for the US Federal Government in which they broadcast to the world in different languages.
So basically they found me through emails regarding Bernos and EthioMeetup and wanted to ask me, how a young Ethiopian American feel and celebrate Valentines Day. I was hesitant at first because it’s hard for me to express my thoughts on a complicated subject in 100% Amharic, yet I agreed.
And so the interview was not live, it was recorded and took about five minutes, I assume they will edit and put some of my blurb somewhere in their program today.
This is the second time I am on VOA, I remember doing a short intro interview some three years back regarding a story I wrote about Abezash of Artist for Charity. Anyways I pretty much sucked, and I really hated my voice.
Allright you guys, I am sure you can listen to my voice online and on today’s VOA radio program. Although the interview was done in Amharic the host mentioned that this will be on the Tigrinya part of the program. I don’t know or I’m not sure if it will be in the Amharic program.
BTW this is not the first time bernos readers will hear me talk. I have had one podcast in the past. I probably should do more.
One of my girl friends, a platonic one once asked me what I knew about romance, I think she was being sarcastic; but in reality I am very romantic, many have said so.

How do you define Romance in your own terms? What kind of guy is romantic and not?
Did you do a shameless plug-in? like “… well as an Ethiopian American in search of true love, I have written a lot about the many romantic exploits I have encountered on my blog at bernos.org … thats b-e-r-n-o-s dot o-r-g where you can see the mindset of the people with regards to issues of the heart and many other things while buying a t-shirt or two …” and mention some of the blogs by name and tell how that chenged your outlook on things.
did you? no?
then what did you say?
Nolawi,
Happy Valentines Day…
As always you do have an interesting entry.I admire your work on this blog.
Looking forward to hear your VOA interview.
Listing to your old pod cast, I just couldn’t stop wondering why you seemed to have accent speaking in Amharic. Is it not your first language?
I have been coming across some Habesha folks lately who don’t seem to speak either their first language or English without an accent…I am not sure what to make of this…
Can someone enlighten me on this phenomenon?

endeeeeee Nolawi is not Dr. Ethiopia .
Happy Valentine’s !
i didn’t actually mention bernos
the guy introduced me as Wetat Nolawi Petros … that was it .. he didn’t say anything about bernos… although I think he should have…
oh my god I listened to it.. the link here you guys
they translated what I said to tigrinya,.. i am not in the amharic version…
Nolawi ,Chill out and act cool
You are making a big deal out of this.
can’t listen to all the tegregna to get to your part.
Hey Nolawi, I heard you on on the radio. You did well although I couldn’t hear the whole thing cos the interpreter domintated most of the part…. however your amharic is not bad. Don’t be self concious.
Nice one Nolawi…Like Tsedey said, you could barely hear your voice!

Winta…what did Nolawi say that he need to chill out and stay cool about? I don’t understand the rationale behind your statement.
Its just an interview …why write a blog about it and send a link.
I mean as far as I see it could have been anybody else …

well.. this is his blog and if he can’t brag about it here then where else..
I didn’t really hear the accent on the interview, and I can’t really say that he has an accent when he speaks English, cauase I’ve never really heard him speak before. However, it would be nice if u spoke Amharic throughout without giving in to English. This isn’t just directed toward you, I have a huge problem with it myself and I think most of us-abeshoch. I wonder why that is? I have a lot of Latino and Asian friends who can carry on a conversation with their family and not drop one English and vice versa!
I didn’t see it as bragging. I write 3 times a week, and the inspiration is the daily happenings.
If I got in a car accident today, I would have written about it. It used to be there were a lot of people that would write on the bernos blog but most have abandoned it. It is kinda my job to make sure i keep up with it so all you guys have something to read..
anyways thanks winta
NO,I didn’t mean you were bragging. I appreciate the issues you raise and its one of the reasons I come to this post.
my point was You sound very sensetive and nervous about this interview.
Nolawiyee most of us do get why you write and we love your posts. We enjoy coming here and engaging ourselves in the insightful conversations (actively, as time permits, or from a distance). We appreciate Bernos!
In fairness to Winta, you did sound a bit nervous about the interview but am sure you did great! Will listen to it and let you know Go Nols!!
Koniye should read Konjiye…thank you. Would hate to be confused with Kebeke7 er I mean Kebele7 from the bole2Harlem post from way back when. Go back and read it when you have time. It was such a hilarious discussion. I loved all the “Yemels mitoch”. Very funny. I was so tempted to say something to Kebele7 but realized that it’s too late now….
howdy!
I felt rather disconnected from bernos lately… so I must leave a comment now
speaking of valentines day… where’s Mengedegna? had a lil sumtin 4′m hehehe
hope y’all had a blessed one!

Muket …you brought up a good point…may be Nolawi will give us more insight into this topic or write another blog entry for Bernos-iness to comment
Here are interesting writhe-ups I came across on the subject of language and Abeshoch

Nolawi, good job heard part of it and you sounded cool but the dude was in a hurry to translate.
tsegure
Not at all…Just know how those things work…Believe me, I have had enough of media for one life time so not jealous at all
well i think being on VOA is fab!! so great job Nolawi!! And yes he should’ve mentioned Bernos (too bad)… and did they really translate into tigrinya? wow.
Good to hear your voice again. I wish there was some Tigrigna 101 course somewhere out there to understand what exactly you were saying.
As for the guramayle language, it is another serious matter altogether.

He said: abesha women do not accept fresh cut flowers for V-Day. They tell you ‘its gonna die tomorrow. You plan to be with me only untill tomorrow? I am not your use and throw.’ Get them artificial flowers. They like the fact it is everlasting.

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
Some truly rattling work on behalf of the owner of this web site, utterly great subject matter.

Thankyou for this post, I am a big big fan of this internet site would like to go on updated.
You made some first rate factors there. I looked on the internet for the difficulty and found most people will go along with together with your website.
My husband and i were very ecstatic that Jordan managed to deal with his web research using the ideas he got out of the web site. It is now and again perplexing to just choose to be releasing tips which usually a number of people could have been trying to sell. We fully understand we now have the website owner to be grateful to because of that. The entire illustrations you made, the straightforward web site navigation, the friendships you can aid to instill – it is most overwhelming, and it’s letting our son in addition to our family reason why this concept is awesome, which is extraordinarily essential. Thank you for all!
