I put Awaze on everythang and I mean everythang.
Every household has their own special recipe. My mother uses Areque, kibe, salt and little bit of water. Some use whiskey, others wine and others Tej. Some use kibe and others olive oil. There is yeberberae awaze and then there is yemitmita awaze. It can be a thick paste or more of a sauce. No matter how its made, everyone agrees Awaze is a must have. Whether having tibs or pasta, Awaze enhances the satisfaction. Even my brother who is ten can’t get enough of this hot sauce.
Incase you didn’t get the drift here at bernos and most likely everywhere, Awaze has some fans. I’ve been to countless dinners with Nolawi, Beshou and Dawit and each time if we agree on one thing it’s no matter what we eat there must be Awaze. What would tire siga, lega or dirq tibs be without awaze?
So it is for this reason we wanted make a shirt that displayed our fond affection. With no further or due we introduce our Awaze Tshirt concept …
Many things went into designing the shirt. We wanted to use the well known hot sauce symbol of the States, Tabasco, to make the connection to our hot sauce. It is our continued attempt to breach the culture gap.
Also note the “made in DC” since what most of us these days is one that is made here. I’m sure all will agree with the shirts color choice. It screamed awaze to us.
I’m really excited about this shirt. Probably the most I’ve been about any of our shirts. It’s HOT!!! So make sure this summer you’re HOT!!!

I love mitmita. Not all mitmita are same. I love the one that is very light pink in color ” gurage mitmita” oh my I love the flavor. Everything i eat has to have pink mitmita next to it.

Tobian, on the Dire Dawa, it doesn’t have specific meaning… other than the fact, that all four of us Beshou dawit, meron and myself had gone out to dinner… and eating injera… one of those three hands is mine.. the other is dawits and the other beshou.. and meron took the picture… it was really late and the waiteress was poking fun with us.. and I happen to ask where she was from she said dire dawa…
in the case of tabasco they factory is located in avery island in lousiana… so the short answer is no special meaning…
I suppose we could put Washington & DC .. we might change that… I didn’t think those little text where as readable.. when the concept was unvieled

Noles, I think the color is right. As the article suggested, since awaze could be based on berbere or mitmiTa, it comes middle way to the hues of either igredient. Deep red won’t do, burgundy or scarlett may. Good choice I say. Diredawa could be symbolic of the hotness, which us awaze lovers savour. Was the waitress also a hot thing? as most Dire girls are.

My constructive criticism: the logo’s not being original is kind of a bummer. i felt the same about the addis ababa classic tee.
on the other hand, your desta keremela, sold in merkato and bikila shirts were kind of original. i own the first 2.
so, how about just having a strand of berbere frey as a logo as opposed to copying tabasco?
come to think of it, i’d even buy the tee if the pic up above (your dish at lalibela) with hands and everything is used as a logo

the concept is to integrate the awaze into a well known western brand that signifies the essence of what awaze means to us...
As meron mentioned it is our attempt to connect the culture gap… east meets west… I am actually very excited about this concept more so than most of our tees of the past… I drew up 9 different types first drafts and voted and talked and talked about it… and we believe in concept.. we can’t make everyone happy.. some of you will of course want it in Amharic others in english… others with injera photo background… and some the way we made it… and others like zgent would be much happier with a white tee with amharic text like zis…
anyways I scoff at those that claim the concept is not original… how do you deduce such a thought… integrating awaze with the Tabasco bottle label…as original as my awaza flavored pasta my ex girlfriend used to make….

I think Meron and Nolawi did a good job explaining our thought process on how we came up with the idea. But to add my two cent…I think this is one of our best design, where we integrated a vary well known brand “Awaze” by using a very well known western brand “Tabasco” to make the connection between two different worlds. I cant think of a better way to explain what Awaze means to me but using this concept. This to me is as creative and original one design can be.
But at the same time I appreciate your input ShalomShalom but I think we just have two different view on this design.

If i eat out for pasta or rice in non-abesha place i will dig into my big handbag and add it to the side. I don’t get the awaze craze which my whole family is into. Nothing like Jamican curry rice and alicha shiro with hot pink powder mitmita.

like said before we are trying to breach the gap with this shirt, hence the tabasco!!! we are showing how for habesha people awaze takes the place of the tabasco. i put awaze on everything…whether its tibs or pizza, so for me awaze is what tabasco would be for an american. therefore the concept is original and GREAT one at that!!! i love this shirt!!!

Shalom’s and I (at least I better speak for me:-)) were looking it from a different angle… say if you had no “Awaze” or description at all, my mental eyes will be caught up by the familiar logo and immediately think of tabasco. That was what i mean.
but, the core idea of synching Awaze with tabasco ..is pretty cool. am sure Abesha Restuarants will also put their hands on this shirt. Nice work!

When I initially commented I appear to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get 4 emails with the exact same comment. There has to be a way you can remove me from that service? Thanks a lot!
