How many times do I hear my sister, telling everyone she talks to, every darn morning,
congratulations you’ve made it to today?“
Too many times! She says it with a chirpy voice like she’s giving you the winning lotto numbers. My answer to her is always “right back atchya.” Does this woman ever give up? No! Her husband usually follows with, “ditto!” and her son, “congratulatin u male it to tolay.”
I asked her once, “why oh why do you have to say that to everyone, everyday?” her answer, “why not? aren’t you happy you made it to today?” Smart ass! My sister, my best friend….don’t let me run into her before I’ve had my coffee, arghhhhhh; she may not like my response. What ever happened to good morning, good afternoon, or good evening?
I made fun of her one day and said “if I want the Brady bunch I’ll reach for the remote until then, quiet on the set!” She tried to be cute and started singing…it’s a story of a man named Brady…ha ha
I never took to heart her positive greeting, until one day we get a call about a relative, in Addis, who is terminally ill. One sleepless night I was thinking about people who have been formally notified that ‘the end is near’ and how they would define ‘the meaning of life’. My mind garbled the following…
Been there, seen that. Done this, did that. Could’ve, would’ve. Don’t look back because you may fall. Look ahead for a brighter day. It was the right thing at that time. Love with your heart not with your body. Regrets are for the dying. Walk till you get someplace. Talk until it makes sense. Write until, until, until you can’t get enough. Love until you get love back. Revenge is only in the movies. Forgiveness is real life. Convince yourself not others. You are as good as your words not your money. Change your life not your mind. Life is what you look for and love is what you find. In the end hug a friend.
There is no landing strip once the rug is pulled out from under us. Enjoy your life as its not a dress rehearsal! I dedicate this to all our brothers and sisters dying of AIDS in Ethiopia.

I do love people like your sister with that positive attitude. I don’t know about you all, but, books (means other human put their thoughts on paper) helped me keep my moral highground high enough to survive the life of Africa’s desperation as a youth.
And those are ppl like your sister with positiveness that lights a candle at the dimmest phase of our life. That is why i held the statement “Our attitude determines our altitude!” so dear to my heart once i came across to it. To those who love proverbs like me, here some shots:

Celeb thanks for the piece. Though i don’t know what i would say if my sister said that to me on a daily basis (i think i’ll shoot myself), I appreciate your sister’s determination to make part of her daily routine and truly meaning it.
All i have to say is your sister is a wise woman. She is right! We all should be happy and thankful the fact that we are lucky enough to weak up in the morning. I don’t think you should get mad at her for saying that to you every morning, i think you should thank her for her joyful words.

I keep wondering if I could make it to today for days just before my birthday, and it goes away after that. On the flip side, they say that life itself is a terminal disease. But even worse, for many it is an absolute curse. For a vast number of ppl, like our folks back home suffering from utter poverty and horrible diseases like AIDS, life, no matter how positive you are is definitely not a blessing. So congratulating them for another day of misery and pain might not be the nicest thing to say.
Celeb, I think it is very positive. So far I have used it on two people with mix reactions. My wife smiled and my co-worker did not know how to reposed (awkward moment). Maybe I will stick with my loved ones for know. It does not roll off my tongue easily but with some practice, will get there.
Smoke…..when u see how some people have positive attitude toward life despite their poverty…and diseases, their optimism will move you. They don’t think of it as a ‘congratulations for another day of misery’ but a blessing of another day filled with hope. I have a good friend who has been living with Aids for a few years now, and believe me, he is much happier and content with his life than most people who have everything going for them. My guess is that he has learned to appreciate making it to each new day. And he has short and long term plans like the rest of us….Now, that is positive attitude and teaches me to be content with what I have. If you are talking about people with broken spirit, let alone words, no action can come close to healing their wound. Only God can mend broken spirits.

wude i have to say that comment was a bit Marie Antoinetish for me but I still love u anyways. Life is hard for the vast majority of the population of the world. And life is incomprehensively hard for a big portion of that billions. I guess we have to lie to our selves and ignore them out of existence. No wonder things don’t change.

a lie is still a lie and that attitude is very selfish. To tell you the truth, it is quite daunting to me not because you are laying per say but the degree of self-delusion that people are capable of. I wonder how many of these self lying people are running countries and are responsible for ppl’s lives.
I’m so loving Wude and Abebe’s comments. When life serves you your walking papers anything to keep your spirit up and going is worth repeating and practicing. Although I don’t believe in lying to someone…congratulating them for another day in this life is not lying it is actually the truth…they’ve made it one more day.

u are right celebrate lying to yourself is one solution to make life a little bit more bearable. You might make yourself happy and maybe you might influence your small surround to some degree. But in the end I don’t think it really amounts to anything more than that.
On the other hand I want u to understand that I am not advocating that u wallow in depression to the point that u are incapacitated. Instead I think having a clearer understanding of reality as it is and confronting the problems head on is a better way of figuring out solutions than the popular sentiment on this thread.

How can you confront terminal illness any more head on then to count your blessings for each and everyday. Walking around sulking is not gonna kill you and sooner so I say the solution is understand and accept what’s happening to you and go on to make each and everyday as if it’s your last – congratulating yourself and others. You can’t face a problem any more head on than this.
C’mon, Nyala, bro. That is too theoretical. You can tell the AIDS medical researcher to confront the problem head on and figure out a solution but until he has a solution you need to give the patient some hope and encouragement. They go hand in hand.

To consider “ making it to today” as a blessing, one has to actually believe that there is such a thing at all. Actually there is a segment of the population who wants to not make it. Meaning, that this life is a transition to the next one (better one). Maybe I am getting into something that is not in the scope of this discussion.

Even if it is not an everyday occurrence, over the last 60+ years we have seen a number of Aser Alkawosh and Hamsa Alkawosh come to power in Africa. Sometime being poor and Mehaim was not the end of the road for this people.
…I do not need to congratulate myself or others for making it yet..to another day. whats the point in doing so..?…If I didn’t make it…I would not feel it(..the not making it, I mean). In fact there is nothing painful than living knowing full well that you may not have had the chance to…ie…living piecemeal..I would imagine dying to be more of a breather..notice the irony here….
