…I do not need to congratulate myself or others for making it yet..to another day. whats the point in doing so..?…If I didn’t make it…I would not feel it(..the not making it, I mean). In fact there is nothing painful than living knowing full well that you may not have had the chance to…ie…living piecemeal..I would imagine dying to be more of a breather..notice the irony here….

To consider “ making it to today” as a blessing, one has to actually believe that there is such a thing at all. Actually there is a segment of the population who wants to not make it. Meaning, that this life is a transition to the next one (better one). Maybe I am getting into something that is not in the scope of this discussion.

Even if it is not an everyday occurrence, over the last 60+ years we have seen a number of Aser Alkawosh and Hamsa Alkawosh come to power in Africa. Sometime being poor and Mehaim was not the end of the road for this people.

Instead I think having a clearer understanding of reality as it is and confronting the problems head on is a better way of figuring out solutions than the popular sentiment on this thread.

How can you confront terminal illness any more head on then to count your blessings for each and everyday. Walking around sulking is not gonna kill you and sooner so I say the solution is understand and accept what’s happening to you and go on to make each and everyday as if it’s your last – congratulating yourself and others. You can’t face a problem any more head on than this.

Going back to ur comment, I actually think ur earlier comment of “congratulating them for…another day of misery?” is ignoring them out of existence…not the actual congratulations which actually celebrates their existence. For example, who am I to tell a poor fellow that his life has no hope when he is thankful for the air he breathes? Where there is hope , there’s life.

u are right celebrate lying to yourself is one solution to make life a little bit more bearable. You might make yourself happy and maybe you might influence your small surround to some degree. But in the end I don’t think it really amounts to anything more than that.

On the other hand I want u to understand that I am not advocating that u wallow in depression to the point that u are incapacitated. Nyala, I thought we discussing the poor people lying to themselves by congradulating themselves/other poor ppl for making it to anotherday? As far as I know poor ppl don’t get a chance to lead a country!!

I’m so loving Wude and Abebe’s comments. When life serves you your walking papers anything to keep your spirit up and going is worth repeating and practicing. Although I don’t believe in lying to someone…congratulating them for another day in this life is not lying it is actually the truth…they’ve made it one more day.

Ok so they’re dying and you’re telling them life sucks cause they’re dying and suffering and exactly what is the point of that? Reality check? Give me a break! Not realizing another lived day is a reason to be joyful is missing the whole reality check bit….

And life is incomprehensively hard for a big portion of that billions. I guess we have to lie to our selves and ignore them out of existence. No wonder things don’t change.

Smoke…..when u see how some people have positive attitude toward life despite their poverty…and diseases, their optimism will move you. They don’t think of it as a ‘congratulations for another day of misery’ but a blessing of another day filled with hope. I have a good friend who has been living with Aids for a few years now, and believe me, he is much happier and content with his life than most people who have everything going for them. My guess is that he has learned to appreciate making it to each new day. And he has short and long term plans like the rest of us….Now, that is positive attitude and teaches me to be content with what I have. If you are talking about people with broken spirit, let alone words, no action can come close to healing their wound. Only God can mend broken spirits.

On the flip side, they say that life itself is a terminal disease. But even worse, for many it is an absolute curse. For a vast number of ppl, like our folks back home suffering from utter poverty and horrible diseases like AIDS, life, no matter how positive you are is definitely not a blessing. So congratulating them for another day of misery and pain might not be the nicest thing to say.
