ADWA 57 Comments

In remembrance of arbegnoch!!

Today, March 2, 2007 (there are conflicting dates for this day—most Eyropean publications have it on March 1, 2006, whereas the victory is actually celebrated on March 2, in Ethiopia–thank you AA for the correction) marks 111 years since the Battle of Adwa.  Podcasted are three songs that I think will invoke some passion.

Podcast 1 is "Fano" by Chalachew Ashenafi.  This version was written and arranged by Messele Assmamaw.  You can find this song and other gems on his album "Gerager."

Podcast 2 is "Shellela" an Instrumental by Getachew Mekuria.  At 74, Getachew Mekuria still performs in Addis.  In fact, I was lucky enough to see him perform this past January at Alliance Francais.  A review of his CD, Moa Anbessa is in the works.  This track comes from Ethiopiques 14-Getachew Mekurya:Negus of Ethiopian Sax.

Podcast 3 is "Adwa" by Gigi.  I'm not a huge fan but her vocals on this song is without a doubt, touching.  She should have done it accapela.   Anyone who was present at the screening of "Adwa: an African Victory" in Washington, DC could attest to this.  Was extremely powerful. This track comes from her self entitled album.

PS: EDIT

A most important and fourth Podcast has been added.

"Fano" by the great Kassa Tessema.

Nyalasmoke: Thank you for coming through.

Wow great song Ethio! if I might say I know the shelelaw song. and I really really love it but there is one thing that always annoyed me… That is the backgroud part… its continues beats throughout the whole song. No variation in it.

I am just surprised why it would be this way.

  6. 6 Emfraz

I love ‘fano’ by chalachew ashenafi … simply dope..! good lookin bro

  7. 7 toothpick

i personally prefer kassa tessema’s version of “fano” … much more poignant, somber, and realistic in terms of the consequences of war and patriotism.

regardless, great choices to commemorate a historical landmark, ethiojazz.

bigups to nyalasmoke for bringing it to folks’ attention on the press, as well.

Hey Nolawi and everyone; What do you guys think my version of Adwa song!! It’s called “Min-Alle” It’s a new song!! I’m sure Nolawi, you would appreciate the new beat! ;-)

Indeed The Battle of Adwa, in which Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II united to defeat an invading force of Italian troops, it was one of the most significant turning points in the history of modern Africa. It occurred, when the “colonial era” was well advanced on the African continent, and it served notice that Africa was not just there “for the taking” by European powers. More than this, growing up in Ethiopia with this History, it marked my heart to do a song for those who sacreficed thier life for our generation: The chores of my song is exactly how our for-fathers went to war and claimed victory over the Italians!!

I’m proud to be an Ethiopian

Check out the actual song on myspace:

    Min-Alle, Jegnawu Min-Alle

  18. 18 Maki

Yonas yene wondem, thanks for the love! Yes! “Aya Bellew” is one of our best work!

Nal: requesting for you to post the 2 songs in your podcast?

Emfraz: Why are you hating dude!? You’re right the chores is not new, but have you listened to the full song? listen to the beat, lyrics etc… For me making the new track with new beat and writing was brining the old to the new. You feel me bro.

    Much respect,

    M.

  19. 19 Nolawi

always love bole to harlem and there was one i liked with arbegnoch like Belay zeleke but never understood who shiferaw was? from the lyrics of one of the orginal bole2harlem songs.

  20. 20 Maki

Nal; Shiferawu is the youngest brother of Belay Zeleke. Who was also a Hero but he was considered a rebel forgotten by many.

  21. 21 Nolawi

Thanks because we had a discussion about it. and we couldn’t figure who shiferaw was. I guess shiferaw zeleke.
