One of the biggest drawbacks on online marketing is social networking sites. Meaning that site like Myspace and Facebook are dominating the webspace.
Dominating is an understatement; these sites are webspaces of their own. They control almost half the web and half of the people we want to attempt to reach. Some of the user have even stopped using email and started using messaging services within these sites. Think of Myspace and Facebook as a separate internet with its own community.
To top that off, the Ethiopian community that you find on Myspace and Facebook is extremely large and this community can not be reached outside of these sites.
As a consequence this was one of Bernos biggest weakness since we didn't understand that marketing on Myspace and Facebook had all this great potential. It is great potential because of the total number of users it represents, as well its unique community and social networking features that's available.
Many of Myspace and Facebook users are extremely devoted to keeping their profile recent and making as many relations with other people in a variety of different ways. As a result we are using our weakness as an asset by having a Myspace and Facebook account and we are reaching to people we never thought were possible to grasp.

I love all the pictures posted with the article and I’m sure myspace will reach out to people all over the world, so I suggest there are other myspace kind of communities you can search, I have seen but can’t remember there is an African myspace site… maybe you can Google it ans see if you can find it.

So, I like the setup on both myspace and hi5 accounts, just had an interesting observation… I did not realize Bernos had a gender and for that it’s MALE! His birthday is January 1, is that really the true inception date for Bernos… how about the year?

Hello Bernos…It’s been a while since I was on Bernos. I am one of those people who haven’t been able to bounce back to my regular schedules since the holidays. (Regular schedules = reading bernos 10 times a day). Anyways I see lots have happened since my bernos days…the press and now myspace and hi5.
Am just amazed by these new sits such as hi5 and facebook. I was just recently in Addis and I was looking for my neighbor who I grew up with and was told she has moved away and nobody know where she is. Yesterday, a friend sends me a link for hi5 and I just sign up. I didn’t think it was my kinda thing but I still signed up just to see what the hype is all about. Before the end of the day…I was talking to my childhood friend.

Wow. I had no idea there were so many Ethiopian users at those social net working sites. I should check them out sometime just to see what it is like…. I know my sisters use hi5.
I personally find the whole social networking thing slightly overwhelming. Too old may be (is 33 over the technology hill?) or premature aging!

I didn’t know you even existed! LOL But, I don’t know if you noticed at the end of my comment I signed Mitmita’Na Berbere, so we do have a little differece in the name! Beside you didn’t originate the name “Mitmita” it’s for all Ethiopians to share… unless you trademark or copyrighted the name “Mitmita”???????????

2nd I did notice the difference in our name but still some what close enough.
And for the record, I did not say that I have copyright over the name mitmita but have been using the name for a while on bernos.
Also the reason it took me a long time to come up with the name is because I was looking for something that fits with my personality. It has nothing to do with my eating habits.
Yemi, there are so many its amazing specially the young ones, who generally socialize outside of the ethiopian community but want to connect to Ethiopians like them, who generally socialize outside of the community….

I would suggest using more proactive advertising within these networks to draw customers… Having ‘events’…posting flyers… and coming up with creative ways to link up notes ‘bernos’ writes (in fb for instance) with the blog…etc.
