Or let the lens speak for him. I first met Merhawi; actually I never met him. Merhawi is one of the countless people I have encountered online. Merhawi registered on Bernos about 6 months ago and posted his picture from the plane. It was a hit.

Merhawi gave me a call one day and asked if I could help design his blog. He actually doesn't speak much, he said he would let his picture talk. A month and a half later teqesa:lensopolis is launched!

One problem I see with Ethiopian bloggers is that they do not sustain for a long period of time. I have had to slowly erase some of the "Ethiopian Blogroll " links on the side bar. Even the most popular Ethiopian blog called aqumada (next to bernos) disappeared. Just because Yekolo Temari:

got a job at a company where working 40 hours a week (60 is more like it) is a norm. All of the sudden, I [Yekolo Temari] had to keep up with young bright kids who are not much older or even younger than me. Forget poetry … I don’t even have time to eat lunch properly.

Really I understand. But there are two reasons for the disappearing acts.

  1. We have a small audience. The number of Ethiopian people throughout the world with a consistent access to the internet  is not even a million people. Less than 0.02% have access to the internet in Ethiopia.
  2. Ethiopian people in general do not support Ethiopian ventures. If Abebe is a new musician and nobody likes him then nobody likes him. After a long time a few people to start to like him, and then everyone will like him!

My point being that it should be a requirement of all Ethiopians to support take notice of Ethiopian ventures, arts, music, etc. Encourage, buy, show interest etc. Those free grazers, that read different Ethiopian news sites, magazines and do not donate, encourage…etc .. That listen to music but do not buy the albums. That read blogs and do not comment …encourage. Ya you.. don't you see what you are doing to the Ethiopian Arts? Saying I do not like a certain music painting minamin is actually helping, so speak up!

With that I introduce you a new Ethiopian to the Ethiopian Blogosphere. I won't say much. I will let the pictures speak for themselves!

Sorry, merhawi.. i went to a different topic on you introduction….. but I had to say it!

oh ya.. teqesa is metQes.. and lesopolis.. I think Italian for.. someth ing to do with the lens aydel

  2. 2 merhawi

thanks for the intro nolawi….even with the digression, lol. but that happens a lot on bernos.

so why teqesa:lensopolis? ive been taking photos for about five years now…did strictly film (mostly b&w) for the first three and a half years. i switched over to digital about a year and a half ago. a couple of months ago i decided that i wanted to share them with the world. ive had a couple of exhibitions but theyve been very focused and i wanted a space where i can put up any picture i want at any time…

i hope you enjoy the site…and i look forward to hearing your comments

  3. 3 La Joconde

    Merhawi,
Very nice pictures, especially the B&W one you posted up. I wondered how often you change these pictures…so I can remember to check whenever new ones should be up…

  4. 4 La Joconde

Yeah, one more question for Merhawi, is it possible for you to post up some tips and tricks of good photograph taking every now and then, especially B&W pictures. I have been trying to take real good ones, invested in a good SLR camera and wasted some developing sub-standard pictures…now it is all at a pause trying to find time for some formal classes. I am sure there are others with same interest…

BTW Nolawi, would it really conflict with your mission statment for Bernos if you actually get some ‘awakiwoch’ sharing some professional tips every now and then, Dr-Bloggers might try telling us a couple of things about nutrition, eating habits bla bla, and you are a good cook werai ayidebek and I am not too proud to admit, I am not one of the best cooks…you get the idea.

  5. 5 merhawi

I wondered how often you change these pictures…

i’m shooting for around three to four pictures a week…so you should see something new on a regular basis. i’m trying to avoid the ‘disappearing act’ mentioned by nolawi.

and about posting tips and techniques…i think thats a great idea, and maybe we can get the resident photographer on bernos to start it off…beshou, u listening?

one thing i can say is that understanding how cameras work was a big help to me when i started out…and u can get this info anywhere on the net.

  6. 6 Chelema

Why do I feel like I got to say something without coming out looking like a bum. (’cause photography ain’t really my thang, ya know. HUSH … HUSH…) But I did find this picture to be exotic. You certainly ceased the moment there buddy! Good luck.

  7. 7 Nolawi

Ya beshou you listening… btw… amazing photos were take yesterday… cant wait to share…

    thanks, merhawi.. keep it up!

  8. 8 Mitmita

*ahem* teqes, teqes merhawi. very nice homie, loving the webpage. we need to see more, seeing as you have a website now , it wont be hard to share anymore ;) as far as exchanging tips for aspiring/amateur photographers…i’d be more than happy to share mine. i took one class of photography my senior year. prior to that, i had no experience whatsoever. the class helped me hone my non-existent skills and sort of polish my “eye”, for lack of a better word. i started with a 35mm pentax (and i still have it) and developing-processing-printing in the darkroom. i fell in love with photography in the darkroom and i truly appreciated photography as an art. i’m more of a b&w, film girl. i used my first slr for the shots we took of the bernos tees the first time around. i never had any prior experience with slr’s. i’ve come to realize that they are more convenient but at the same time make you extremely lazy . i think merhawi has dealt more with slr’s than i have. i still dont own one, although i think i might in the near future. for aspriring/amateur photographers, like myself, i would recommend you to take one class of photography just to get you started.

I think what la jaconda had in mind was tips and techniques article on bernos…

obviously… there are better photography blogs.. that give tips and techniques with people who have more experience in the field…

I think bernos obviously is not the best spot for that.. but it is indeed a place better suited about your personal expeirence with digital photography… as beshou has written… maybe oe day you can bless us with a full article

a wonderful tips and techniques fordigital photography here and here and here and here

aren’t blogs great… links courtesy of via google blog search!!

  23. 23 La Joconde

OOOO, right you are Nolawi, thank god for blogs…for I dont think I would ever have known about Aida Muluneh and Gedion and all the rest…am finding out am wayyyyy behind on a lot of abesha talent…

Thank you all at Bernos. This is actually my first time checking a blog so regularly it is scaring me the way it is going…:)

  24. 24 tata

    Nolawi

I don’t agree on both your points what you said about ethiopians.
    1) Yes Ethiopian internet users are in the .02% range but the people who know about blog and have the time to blog is less than that. Because I work 40 hours ena bezu seate le blog. but still don’t have like some people. So I have been internet user from day one and the way I look at it is growing so fast than usual. Nowadays, you don’t find and ethiopian without an e-mail address…

On your second point) Ethiopians only asks for support until they get some cash and be the habtam from their circle and they think money is everything. But I thinks that’s part of the culture the more you have money the more you get respected.
    Peace!

  25. 25 Nolawi

    tata,
if you are saying its a very small number.. that means you agree.. ethiopians on the web are small.. even those that check email only… basically my point was that the percentage of ethiopians on the web is minute in comparison to the rest of the world… just a few people in addis and ethiopia have access regularly… and the number of Ethiopians outside of Ethiopia is less than a million.. from those that are living in europe and n america are the majority of the users… and not even ten percent are internet savvy…enough to blog… basically you agree on point one…

good point on 2, but that doesn;t really oppose what i have said does it!

anyways… Tata always appreciated you inputs

  26. 26 t

Merhawi , and I am from Tunisia and my name is Tanisk ….. and look like the driver neger

  27. 27 merhawi

lol…congratulatons. you’ve picked up amharic very quickly t.

  28. 28 tata

nolawi r u a lawyer? If not, you should go for it. You might be the first non-american born in the suprem court…you never know…
    Peace

  29. 29 Nolawi

lol at merhawi’s sarcasm.. if indeed it is sarcasm..

    tata..:) eshi

    RE: Nolawi @ 19

    Merhawi/Nolawi,

It will be nice to have a Bernos like photo-blog where various amateur habesh photographers can post/share their images. I guess, much like Flickr, but more like Bernos or Merhawi’s site.

Sorry if it’s already been said.

  31. 31 merhawi

    sarcasm? me?…nooooo.

  32. 32 Shanti

Nice pics, I can’t wait to see more of your pics. I love photography and someday hope to take it up as a serious hobby/career? Right now its all me and my small digital camera.

La Joconde: M/F? What does your name mean? Is it related to the Mona Lisa thing, if so, I’m guessing you are female? I agree with you about this blog… I am getting to know of some new things as well. Friendly advice about Bernos though: Be careful, if you can run then do it now. I signed up to join this dysfunctional group sometime back and now I’m addicted. For real… they have me hooked… run, I say… or suffer the consequences like me ;)

Psst… they are a lovely dysfunctional group though – wouldn’t trade them for anything.

  33. 33 La Joconde

    Shanti,

Right you guessed! about it all, F, La Joconde = French name for Mona Lisa.

AND endew in life, never ever had any online vices until now, ahun ahun I sit at work and read every new posting on Bernos, stuff piling and waiting for me….I tell you am in!! point of no return it seems. from now, it is downhill to unemployment (j/k) but Shanti-dear, thanks for the advice nonetheless.

Now, lemme go check the other new posts:)

  34. 34 merhawi

    tobian and shanti,

i think its a cool idea. maybe it could even be started as a flickr group? if there is enough interest i’d be willing to help out.

  35. 35 Nolawi

I am down too. i have some ideas… the best way to get started is to set up a listserve and then talk i email about how to approach the project…

  36. 36 Shanti

Nolawi, I love your “lets do it attitude”. Goudey, demo kante gar fiker endayizign?

  37. 37 BeGirimt Felasfit

I think the photo site idea is great!!! It would be very nice to share pics and comments….hope someone takes on the challenge~~!!

  38. 38 Nolawi

hmmm sounds like something people are interested… but I doubt there is commitment behind the interest. I don’t think we will ever do this… but something to think about!

It is perfect to check the schedule of museums and free
galleries ahead of time. Therefore a transport supplier ensures that
the satisfaction with the client may be the main priority on its
list. You will be able to find the ways to pass the time and not permit the delay turn into a long tiring wait.
