Name a Midget! 109 Comments

Ethiopian Baby

A friend asked me to go out with him. He was meeting a couple of ladies for a drink. The drink happened to be dinner, and since I already had dinner, I ordered my favorite; Chivas straight that is.

After one [drink] the conversation turned, I passionately started to explain what's wrong with Ethiopia. I backed up my data with some stats and how population control is the key, minamin.

We were laughing, but I was the only one talking. Beqa people need to stop having kids; Birth control condoms! One per couple is enough! Get a condom! After pill whatever it takes. Heck, vasectomy is reversible!

If you can’t get a babysitter, don’t come out, it’s probably a good sign that you didn’t need to have a baby in the first place. I am tired of this Abesha’s bringing their little midgets to weddings or plays or comedy shows. Little midgets crying and running around, I can’t concentrate. On my wedding no one under 18 is allowed to come. Bring your ID’s! I don’t care if in Ethiopia you are 20!

Shit, I plan not to have any kids, because everyone else in my family had more than their quotas. Ye’derg gize sugar was supplied by controlled dististribution; by rationing or as they say sekuar be'ration eko nuew Hulet makia bicha! That was good population control. A household was only allowed a certain amount of sugar; perhaps that explains why Ethiopians have sugar fixation. I hate getting coffee 7 eleven because it takes like 12 packets for me to have enough.

After all that one of the ladies I was having drinks with tells me that she has two kids. Are you fuken serious? Yes, she is married with two kids! Wow, well at least she can afford a babysitter or something. It’s midnight isn’t it? Maybe I should have been embarrassed but I wasn’t! I just took it as sign that I’m really getting old that I’m socializing with married folks with kids.

Well good— for— youuu! Lij belejenet nuew!

So everyone I know wants me to help them name their babies. I’ve already named two of them little midgets, why not make it even and go for three! Yap, I’m going to be an uncle yet again to a beautiful little boy midgets. I only give baby shower gifts every other midjet. But name him, I sure will.

So a Pazione from Seattle gave me a call the other day, oh nice so I had to email him back to ask him the meaning. You see I need to name a midget, something with a geez twist, something unique yet Ethiopian. Ya, something just as nice as my name, or at least give it a shot.

If I end up using the name, I’ll buy you a Bernos T-shirt ! Forgive the pejorative term, I seriously do love kids.

    how is about meseker.

let me know if I win a tshirt

  2. 2 celebratelife

Thank you for the laughter…my next topic was something similar and you just set the stage for it. You are hilarious, I feel you on the overpopulated little folks! There are too many damn kids! It’s like I closed my eyes for a minute and when I opened it I felt like I was at a nursery.

What bothers me even more is after a woman has a child she complains like hell about how she feels trapped and lost…yeah whatever. You know people who have children, party like there’s no tomorrow because they know that may be the last night out. I’d be a rich woman if I opened a children’s night care for the Abesha community.

**I’d like to give a shout-out to my favorite nephew…my precious comedian, lecturer, and all around loving angel. Love you honey**

Good luck with the name I have no clue.

  3. 3 Rahwina

Oh I second Celeb, that was the greatest laugh I’ve had all Day!!! As for the name issue, try looking for a name that sorta goes with the fathers name seeing that the kid will have that as a last name or sth. For Example, there is maade Bruk(as in maad….scared meal sorta thing…lost in translation I’m afraid…y’know things like that anyway.

  4. 4 ShalomShalom

50 cents say the Chivas was working as you wrote that…

I miss yeQebele Sikuar, ankuaroo to be specific.

  5. 5 Tobian

But Kebele gave you more sugar if you had more kids :-) The quota was per head and apparently ‘midgets’ were counted.

And little people are cute! If only they’d not gorw.

  6. 6 Nolawi

Hey hey you guys, dont forget to drop a name.. maybe the name of your favorite little cousins name or someth…

    drop a name…. dont get sidetracked…

tobian you are so right… the quotas was per number of people in the household…

  7. 7 Nolawi

    Also guys
a wonderful article by hama tuma

  8. 8 ShalomShalom

how about sikuar, assuming the midget will be sweet and granulated when s/he grows up?

  9. 9 celebratelife

Ok, no sidetracking, I don’t know how unique these names are but they’re my favorite male names…..Nahom, Kaleb, Emanuel, Getahun, Zekarias, Fitsum,

  10. 10 pazion

    Little correction Nolawi,

    It actually is

    ‘pazion’

    , but you spelled it

    ‘pazione’

( by saying that unless you mean to see, like ‘bete – to ‘my house’ – pazione – ‘my brother’) lol that is a stretch.

But, Nolawi, I’m troubled with the ‘midget’. I can’t not find a good connotation to it.. unless it is the opposite.( like ppl say ‘he is bad’, but what they meant to say is ‘he is good’) :)

    The ‘Encarta Dictionary’ has:

    1. offensive term, an offensive term for a very short person whose skeleton and features are of normal proportions
    2. very small version of something: a very small version of something, such as a car or boat

so, I take on the second defn. and will suggest a name.

How about batsebah ( in geez ) originally in Hebrew BATHSHEBA … meaning ….”a state in which somebody has had enough or too much” … well it is a starter..

  11. 11 Tobian

    Have a field day : http://www.myethiopianame.bravehost.com/Malenames.html

I can see a boy called ‘Belendia’ being tormented as a child in the west.

Armah and Basliel I’ve never heard of. Interesting.

  12. 12 dendir

hey how about my name dendir,… with a name like that you have a garenteed job as a woyala or a listro… ha ha ha…

Ya i shine shoes at the ritz carlton in manhatten. I probably make more money that all the engineers that come to bernos.

  13. 13 Teyaki

    dendir,.. that was hillarious…

that is what i call… utilizing what is in your hand…

keep on and let’s us know ‘how you become “the top shoe shiner”
    :)

  14. 14 Nolawi

    Tobian betam arif simoch betam
    really guys keep them coming

shalom sikuar for a boy,, i dont know about that

  15. 15 Nolawi

    Sorry pazion,

    thanks for the name

  16. 16 Arada

    My most favorite is “ORIT”
Orit is a female given name, an equivalent in Ge’ez to “the Bible”. Orit is similar to the respective Hebrew and Aramaic terms “ora” and “oraita”, both meaning “the Law of the Bible”.

  17. 17 Marena-Wotete

Arada, that was good, but can you top this…?
    NIKAHYWOT
Nikahywot is a female given name meaning “source of life” in Ge’ez (“nika” = source; “hywot”= life), resembling the Hebrew “heyot”, which means “to be” or “to live”.

The new child is regarded as a source of life and regeneration, so this name fits her (I’m assuming she’s a female midget, correct?).

    M&W

  18. 18 Marena-Wotete

Sorry, I missed the part that you will be an uncle to a baby girl! So let think hard again.. :-)

  19. 19 FlorNueva

    nice topic.
i like Mariamawit, Maraki, Blen for girl names. Not very Geezi, I know. Mertedal, Berzedal, Feven (Pheobe) are also female names from the bible, just dont ask me where in the bible. Teobesta is a unique one, she was the mother of St. George.

p.s yours is one of my fav. names.

  20. 20 Mitmita

    How about Nikodimos

  21. 21 Nolawi

Yo you guys, why are you naming girl names…

I SAID boy eko… gin I’ll save the girl name for the next baby.. probably in december…

Speaking of their was a big blizzard for 6 days in DC in 1996 and exactly 9 months later all the hosiptals were flooded with pregnant woman to have a baby…

basically everyone was stuck at home and got really busy … thus the kids born in early august of 97 were called the BLIZZARD Babies…

one of which was my cousin…

  22. 22 Marena-Wotete

Nolawi….Ok! Ok! Don’t shoot us!! How about my two fav. (Boy) names,
Ezana of Axum (Ge’ez ??? ??z?n? unvocalized ??? ?zn. also spelled Aezana), was ruler of the Axumite Kingdom (c.330 – c.356)

Mani(in Persian & Arabic ????) was born in Babylon, Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) which was a part of Persian Empire about 210-276 CE. He was a religious preacher and the founder of Manichaeism!

    M&W

  23. 23 Moki

    Nilawoi

How about some real ethiopian names like… Shiferaw, Shinabachew, Endalkachew, Demdime, Astatke. The kind of names that make your hair rise. Good luck.

  24. 24 ShalomShalom

the midget shall be named Alula!

    normal name with abnormal hotness.

  25. 25 ShalomShalom

    OR what Moki said… :)

  26. 26 Nolawi

    ha hah ahahh

    toooo funny ‘

I couldnt stop laughing at Endalkachew

    like Endalkachew Tessema…

Dub Dub ahnd hulet soset arat…

  27. 27 Marena-Wotete

How about Sarabachew Negga! Or Tilik Seew, Tinish Seew, Acher Seew, your options are not limited when it comes to an Ethiopian name…

  28. 28 Temelkach

    Nolawi,
    kalkidan, bruck, Fetehalew, Terusew…..

  29. 29 greetings

    Just getting to the point
    Manenderas

  30. 30 munit

NOli, here is one good name Edomias, I found it in the Bible and I believe it is a name of a place some where in Israel. OR, Noel or Elyab are not bad either.

  31. 31 Nolawi

Thank you, everyone for participating, you guys continue with the names…once the baby comes and the mother chooses something i’lll update you guys

  32. 32 Rahwina

I second Ezana and Alula, they ain’t much but they carry some confidence in their names…love it!
Nolawi, why don’t you check out Ethiopian history, they have the typical Ethio names…start with the kings and you can’t go wrong ;)

  33. 33 ftob

Moki – Shinabachew?!! It sounds interesting. I wonder what the parents would think of it. How about Leo, Menas, Keon, Yaron.

  39. 39 LIL

    I name him KIDUS.

  40. 40 Majestic Rainbow

Hi Nolawi. I regret not visiting this site quite often. I name the little guy Abbysinia.
I love that name a million times and never met one yet. You can’t get original than that.

  41. 41 Tsilat

Hey Noliye, This is your sister (not the one that just had a baby), I am here to update you and the Bernos community on top four names the proud parents of the “baby midget” are choosing from…

    1. Pazion
    2. Yossias
    3. Ethan
    4. I forgot the fouth one, I think it is Kena

Pazion, looks like you might win a t-shirt

anyways I will keep you updated…Tsilat

  42. 42 Nolawi

Great Great Pazione it should be!

  43. 43 pazion

    Nolawi,

I’m happy and proud to share my name with your sis ….

we are the new generation of “pazion’s” right-on Tsilat.

    pazion

  44. 44 Tsilat

It’s not finally yet so hold your horses guys

  45. 45 Nebiyu Asfaw

    What’s up Nolawi / Tsilat..

Good luck and congrats again.. But I’m sorry I have to say that as nice as the names may sound #1 and #2 are neither abesha nor American friendly. The kid is gonna have a hard time telling people how to say and spell his name for the rest of his life. So, I am crossing my figures for #3.. I am imagining when this kid grows up and runs for Congress; would people know how to say his name?

  46. 46 Nolawi

Nebiyou what is wrong with ‘Barack Obama’? for president!

Pazion sure isn’t harder than Nolawi and or Tsilat!

  47. 47 Nebiyu Asfaw

    Nolawi,

Obama is an extraordinary man and one of a kind. But if we can help make the child’s life a little bit easier why not do it? Would this child be likely to have an easier time with an easy to spell and prounce name or some unique name that will stick him out of the crowd? What is the point of giving a child a rare and unique name? Is it to serve our ego, or to make a point to society? at what cost?

I am not saying totally westernize children but I don’t think we should make them too different from the crowd in which they will grow up with. There is a great deal of probability that their name will affect their populatiry, job opportunity, housing opportunityt, career choices, etc… There is a greater chance that they will grow up to face name discrimination. Did you know that statistically there is a 50% gap in call back rates with job applicants with “unusual” names?

  48. 48 Nolawi

I’m going to agree with you on this nebiyou… I might have mentioned that i met an amazing salesman that sold database solutions for fortune 100 companies for twenty years… he was abesha and very successful at what he does… he had shortened his name to be american freindly…

its very rare to see ethiopians in advertising sales and marketing… they are all white males generally speaking with names like… david, sam, and kevin…..

    anyways i agree…

  49. 49 punie

Noli you are AWESOME!! I loved the midget’s article…..anyhow it was very hard deciding on the name so we settled for EiTa and the name picked was etan. I think pazion was a good name so the shirt should go to him.
And noli the chiva’s is on me.. u just gona have to wait until I get a baby sitter.

  50. 50 Nolawi

Great Great, Etan is a wonderful name!!

Maybe Pazion for the next midget, Pazion you will get a shirt! how about Desta Keremela shirt? we are low quantity on the rest of the shirts… unless you want large bikila….
    regardless email us the details….

  51. 51 La Joconde

Oh my God, that is a very beautiful name, like I have never heard!! Etan – very unique, I hope noone in the house hold becomes Pente some day and denounces Incense:)

If you family likes unique ones like that, maybe when they have a midgette – girl:) maybe you can try the other very unique one I heard, Liyat…. Surely mothers must find that descriptive of the 9 month long wait…

  52. 52 La Joconde

P.S. Just realized this midget wont have to work too hard westernizing his name like your aforementioned ‘amazing salesman’. Simply born an Ethan!!

  53. 53 pazion

    Nolawi,

Ethan is a nice name, Think baby defines it of having a Hebrew origin, and its meaning is “firmness, steadfastness, constancy.”.

    I like that defn.
btw, La Joconde ethan has a Biblical root … so even if the household becomes pente the name still serves them (even better) see? :-)

Nolawi, I will take Bikilla XL….. THANKS

    Pazion

  54. 54 La Joconde

Pazion, it seems I was totally on the wrong track. I fell in love with the name thinking it was eTan as in eTan ena Kerbae. Thanks for clarifying…now I revise my opinion about the name:)j/k

  55. 55 Nolawi

Sorry pazion we are all sold out of the bikila extra large!

I like saying that… also very low on the x large of addis classic…. so you are left with desta keremela… which is popular in the seattle area for some reason….

email meron for the details of shipping info info@bernos.org

  56. 56 Shanti

Menew Nolawi, you guys could print one out for him per his desired taste and size :(

Just kidding… Pazion my dear, love your name… its unique all the way and that is how a name should be :)

But, I’m still confused about the name of your nephew – is it Etan or Ethan?

Congratulations to you and your family…

  57. 57 Tsilat

    In English ….it is Ethan
    and in Amharic (and Hebrew)…Etan

  58. 58 Nolawi

Tsilat but there is no meaning here!

  59. 59 pazion

    Nolawi,

I have received the ‘Desta Keremela’ T-shirt. Thanks a lot
Looks really good, actually I have worn it @ work today….

Bernosoch, it is a good Christmas gift. I actually considering it.

Also, thanks Tsilat for considering my name …:-)

    pazion

  60. 60 t

what does “Nolawi” mean, by the way? Is it Geez? Amharic or other? Regardless, it sounds nice….

  61. 61 Nolawi

Thanks it means Protector in geez, Sheppard and we are the sheep, thus our protector Jesus. Enga ERegna is jesus basically.

    Usually heard in Kedases

  62. 62 lulu

It is indeed a very nice sounding name. I did not know it was a word in geez or the meaning. Live and learn eh? Thanks for the lesson Nolawi.

I am extremely concerned about the next election. When I think about what is occuring in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East (not to mention our own economy) we sure must have a skilled leader. I’m far from convinced that President Obama or any of the Republican contenders thus far have the experience or skills it takes to get the job done the way it has to be accomplished. Being president of this country is an remarkably difficult job. Do you think there is someone out there with the experience, skill, and moral courage to do the job?

Thanks for the useful information on credit repair on this particular site. Some tips i would tell people is to give up the particular mentality they can buy right now and pay back later. Being a society we tend to make this happen for many issues. This includes holidays, furniture, and also items we really want to have. However, you should separate your own wants from the needs. If you are working to boost your credit score actually you need some trade-offs. For example it is possible to shop online to economize or you can look at second hand stores instead of high-priced department stores for clothing.
